We are grateful to Ken Phillips who came to our home to take us in his car to church on Sunday, September 29, 2019. It is amazing what a year can do in one's life. Melvine was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer one year ago in September 2018. Today, after a year she is alive and well enough to go to church. To God be the glory for the great things He has done. We have learned and are learning how to put our trust in God. Through it all we have discovered that God still performs miracles and heals our bodies. God blessed the efforts of our people who had invited others to be our guests at worship on Sunday. It was Game Day. We had 87 people in church. Pastor Terry Kesling preached the most compassionate message I have heard him preach since coming to our church some 2 years ago. Prayer was being offered up as we worshiped. Three people came to be saved and responded to the altar service. Others were blessed. It was good to see again David Pearson. He has a brilliant mind. Several years ago he was in a car accident and he has experienced paralysis in his body. I encouraged him never to give up and that God will fulfill his dreams. He has a lot of projects but needs skilled people to help him. Following morning worship, the people were encouraged to go to Stephanie's Place, our fellowship hall, for sandwiches, chips and dips. They called it tailgating. A goodly number of people enjoy a time of eating and fellowship. Melvine, Greg, and I wanted to go out to eat. It is rare now that we go anywhere. So, Sundays are a special time for us to eat at a nice restaurant. Today, we went to Outbacks. And it was delicious. After dining, Greg drove us home and we all crashed by taking our Sunday afternoon naps. Today, Monday, I have an appointment with our family doctor, Alice Edwards, MD. Greg will drive me and Bonnie Bender will come and stay with Melvine while we are gone. Audrey Cox stayed with Melvine on Friday afternoon while Greg and I went shopping at Home Depot. What a blessing these ladies are to us. We are blessed to have a good family doctor. Thank you again for allowing us to come into your home, office or workplace today with Hugh's News. May this be a good day for all of you and a great week. Your friend in all seasons, Hugh H. Let's be a part of that future. President Trump Promotes Religious Freedom in UN Speech President Trump on Monday decried religious intolerance during a speech at the United Nations in which he called on world leaders not to persecute people over their faith. “The United States is founded on the principle that our rights do not come from government, they come from God. This immortal truth is proclaimed in our Declaration of Independence and enshrined in our First Amendment to our Constitution, Bill of Rights,” the president said. “Our founders understood that no right is more fundamental to a peaceful, prosperous and virtuous society than the right to follow one’s religious convictions. Regrettably, religious freedom enjoyed by American citizens is rare in the world,” he continued. Trump said it was an “urgent moral duty” for world leaders to stop crimes against faith, release prisoners of conscience and repeal laws restricting religious liberty. “Approximately 80 percent of the world population live in countries where religious liberties are threatened, restricted or even banned. When I heard that number I said, ‘Please go back and check because it can’t possibly be correct.’ Sadly, it was: 80 percent,” Trump told the Religious Freedom Summit at the UN. “As we speak, Jews, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs, many other people of faith are being jailed, sanctioned, tortured and even murdered even at the hands of their own government simply for expressing their deeply held religious beliefs,” he said, calling on world leaders to be more tolerant. The president then cited a number of cases of terrorism and violence in which targets have been chosen because of religion, such as the mosque shootings in New Zealand, and he announced that the United States will contribute $25 million to help protect religious relics and promote religious freedom. Trump’s speech extends a long-running focus on international religious freedom that speaks to a key priority of his evangelical base. His administration has hosted annual meetings on the topic in Washington, and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced during this year’s event that he would create an international alliance on the issue. One prominent evangelical backer, Dallas-based pastor Robert Jeffress, lauded Trump for focusing on religious freedom instead of climate change. “What president in history would have the guts to do what President Trump is doing?” Jeffress said on Fox News. “And it’s this kind of leadership that is absolutely infuriating the president’s enemies, but it’s also energizing his base, especially his religious base of voters.” Trump did, in fact, make an unscheduled visit to the UN Climate Action Summit after being expected to skip the event. He took a seat in the auditorium as Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India went onstage, and then leaned forward intently to listen. There remain deep differences between Team Trump — who pulled the United States out of the Paris climate accord — and much of the Western world over the threat posed by climate change and what actions are needed. “I’m a big believer in clean air and clean water, and all countries should get together and do that, and they should do it for themselves. Very, very important,” Trump said. The president also had meetings with the leaders of Poland, Singapore, South Korea and New Zealand. On Tuesday, Trump will deliver a speech before the UN General Assembly. His message is scheduled to focus on upholding the sovereignty and independence of UN countries, protecting religious freedoms and underscoring that the United States is a positive alternative to authoritarian regimes. With AP Ephesians 6:18-20 Pray for me (the apostle Paul) that I may speak boldly the Gospel
18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; 19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the Gospel, 20 For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. KJV ++++++++++ Ephesians 6:18-20 Pray for me (the apostle Paul) for God to give me the right words . . . for Gentiles, too 18 Pray all the time. Ask God for anything in line with the Holy Spirit's wishes. Plead with Him, reminding Him of your needs, and keep praying earnestly for all Christians everywhere. 19 Pray for me, too, and ask God to give me the right words as I boldly tell others about the Lord and as I explain to them that His salvation is for the Gentiles too. 20 I am in chains now for preaching this Message from God. But pray that I will keep on speaking out boldly for Him even here in prison, as I should. TLB +++++++++ Ephesians 6:18-20 Pray that I'll know what to say and have the courage to say it at the right time 18 In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other's spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out. 19 And don't forget to pray for me. Pray that I'll know what to say and have the courage to say it at the right time, telling the mystery to one and all, the Message that I, 20 jailbird preacher that I am, am responsible for getting out. (from THE MESSAGE: The Bible in Contemporary Language © 2002 by Eugene H. Peterson. All rights reserved.) [Editor's Comment: We should take courage knowing that Paul, himself, requested the Ephesians to pray for him as he witnessed and shared the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ that included the Gentiles, too. It is my prayer that you will continue to pray for Melvine and me that through her sickness and battle with ovarian cancer that we will be able to declare the Gospel of Jesus Christ for the whole world. We are not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ for it it the power of God unto salvation to everyone who will believe. Let us pray that souls will be saved in our worship services in our local churches, too.] Four high school boys afflicted with spring fever skipped morning classes.
After lunch they reported to the teacher that they had a flat tire. Much to their relief she smiled and said: "Well, you missed a test today so take seats apart from one another and take out a piece of paper." Still smiling, she waited for them to sit down. Then she said: "First Question (100 points): Which tire was flat?" You and I are living in days that test the souls of men. We all need an anchor that will hold though the winds and storms rage all around us. That anchor is Jesus Christ. It was in September of 2018 when the doctors at St. Mary's hospital in Athens, Georgia discovered that Melvine had an ovarian cancer. It was determined that it was stage 3 in its growth. As we met with the oncologist and looked at the various options that were available through modern medicine, we chose the plan of chemotherapy. Melvine went through several courses of chemotherapy. Standing with us though that long and tedious experience was Bonnie Bender, a retired nurse, who went with Melvine and me to almost every one of the chemo sessions. A little over a month, after a CAT Scan and extensive blood work, it was determined that nothing more could be done for Melvine medically, and the oncologist referred Melvine to Home Hospice Care. We were thinking more of death than of life. That is, I was. However, Melvine never bought into it. One day she boldly proclaimed, "I am not going to die, I am going to live forever." About the same time, Melvine's first cousin, Mary Ann Shropshire Weeks and her husband, Everette, came to visit us from Richmond, VA. That visit and ministry was the defining moment that has changed our outlooked and helped us to focus our attention on God and to place our trust in Jesus Christ Who is the Great Physician. Now, we can declare with confident assurance: Psalm 118:17 17 I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD. KJV The future and outcome is now in the Hands of God. We want to thank you all for standing with us in believing faith and not giving up. We deeply appreciate your faith in God for Melvine, your cards, letters, emails, etc. You may write us at: Hugh & Melvine Morgan 17 Sweet Apple Lane Winder, GA 30680 Write me at this email address: hugh@hughsnews.com Trump promotes religious freedom in UN speech President Trump on Monday decried religious intolerance during a speech at the United Nations in which he called on world leaders not to persecute people over their faith. “The United States is founded on the principle that our rights do not come from government, they come from God. With AP Plan to Attend Hugh & Melvine's Church today in Athens, GA What I like about our church in Athens, Georgia is the lasting friendships we have with the people. We are not a large church. I guess we have about 100 people if all came to church on the same Sunday. I can tell you that you will be pleased with the spirit of love and joy as you speak to the people. You will enjoy the music, the singing, praying for the sick, and the preaching of our pastor, Terry Kesling. He is always prepared to preach and he says something that you can easily remember and apply in your life. This Sunday has been designed GAME DAY. Read the postal card below that Arlette Revells has designed for our pastor and church congregation to give to invite people to join us this Sunday. This card is Melvine and my invitation to you and your family to join us as our special guests this Sunday, September 29. The worship service begins at 11 a. m. Author: Wayne Brady In his writing, “A Life Well Lived,” Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” This, I think, is true and very few people ever realize this happening in their lives. It’s not that it can’t happen, but many people will not let it happen. Living in this country, America, we have been blessed to the point that we think in terms of bigger, better and more. And the person who has learned from the Holy Scriptures, The Bible, is the one who has not caved in to our culture driven society but salvaged his or her life by applying the timeless truths revealed therein. I know of one person of this magnitude who is known the world over by millions of people. Her life has been relegated to the needs of the downtrodden, the helpless, homeless and societal rejects. On the other hand, she has been an inspiration and encourager to those in the highest positions, giving her time and talents to serve a cause greater than herself. She has been relentless in her stand for righteousness, truth and justice intercontinentally as well as locally. She has been battered by the powers and principalities of the air but has remained faithful through those storms when many have been pulled under giving way to demonic forces that try other’s souls. Not she. Battling through the loss of a dear daughter, Stephanie, who was cut from the same cloth, she stayed faithful while watching as God delivered Stephanie from this world of suffering. She stood guard over her family when her husband was also serving God but in various other parts of the world. Yet, all this was done without complaining, becoming negative or acquiescing to the demands of societal changes which violate God’s Word. I’m sure there were many lonely days and nights when the comforts of home were not available, when the soft touch of her companion was not available, or the smooth relaxing voice of her counterpart was not accessible. But she remained steadfast knowing that through all these lonely days God said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Then, Hugh is back, just like the darkness gives way to the morning light, her God given husband was back and eradicated the lonely, exhausted feelings and once again filled the home with love and laughter. Thank you, Melvine for being an example of the consummate wife, mother, servant of God and Galatians 5:22-23. It gives me joy and pleasure to announce to you that we have acquired the web link to the YouTube video of the memorial service for the Rev. Dr. Dan Beller. Here us the link: You may Click Here. https://youtu.be/qrMqpQA4dX4 I don't know how long YouTube will allow this video to be shown. So, try to see it today if all possible. 10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the Gospel of peace; 16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God: 18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; KJV ++++++++++ Ephesians 6:10-19 Your strength must come from the Lord's mighty power within you 10 Last of all I want to remind you that your strength must come from the Lord's mighty power within you. 11 Put on all of God's armor so that you will be able to stand safe against all strategies and tricks of Satan. 12 For we are not fighting against people made of flesh and blood, but against persons without bodies--the evil rulers of the unseen world, those mighty satanic beings and great evil princes of darkness who rule this world; and against huge numbers of wicked spirits in the spirit world. 13 So use every piece of God's armor to resist the enemy whenever he attacks, and when it is all over, you will still be standing up. 14 But to do this, you will need the strong belt of truth and the breastplate of God's approval. 15 Wear shoes that are able to speed you on as you preach the Good News of peace with God. 16 In every battle you will need faith as your shield to stop the fiery arrows aimed at you by Satan. 17 And you will need the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit--which is the Word of God. 18 Pray all the time. Ask God for anything in line with the Holy Spirit's wishes. Plead with Him, reminding Him of your needs, and keep praying earnestly for all Christians everywhere. TLB ++++++++++ Ephesians 6:10-18 When it's all over but the shouting you'll still be on your feet 10 And that about wraps it up. God is strong, and He wants you strong. 11 So take everything the Master has set out for you, well-made weapons of the best materials. And put them to use so you will be able to stand up to everything the Devil throws your way. 12 This is no afternoon athletic contest that we'll walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours. This is for keeps, a life-or-death fight to the finish against the Devil and all his angels. 13 Be prepared. You're up against far more than you can handle on your own. Take all the help you can get, every weapon God has issued, so that when it's all over but the shouting you'll still be on your feet. 14 Truth, righteousness, 15 peace, 16 faith, 17 and salvation are more than words. Learn how to apply them. You'll need them throughout your life. God's Word is an indispensable weapon. 18 In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other's spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out. (from THE MESSAGE: The Bible in Contemporary Language © 2002 by Eugene H. Peterson. All rights reserved.) Two ladies were hanging out together and one was depressed.
"What's wrong?" The depressed one replied, "I've been married four times and everyone of my husbands has passed away." The other lady asked, "What did they used to do?" The depressed lady replied, "Well, my first husband was a millionaire, the second was a magician, the third was an evangelist, and the fourth was a mortician." And the other lady said, "Oh, one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go." I can remember several key moments in our lives, Melvine and me, when we were faced with a death and life challenge, or a healing challenge when we turned to God with the faith God gave us in that moment to trust His Word. When Greg was about 9 months old he contacted measles, the worst kind. We lived in Brownville, Alabama near Evergreen, Alabama. Because of the high fever, Greg's intestines telescoped and there was a major blockage. Our general surgeon was not skilled enough to do the operation, but had us go to Montgomery where the best pediatric surgeon in the Southeast practiced. He called ahead and got this surgeon to agree to operate on Greg. I drove Melvine and Greg to Montgomery to the hospital. Our hearts were heavy. We had already lost a boy through a miscarriage, and a daughter who was a still birth. We wondered will God require us to lose another child? Meanwhile, after we got Greg registered and in his room, the nurses prepared Greg for surgery. The doctor came in and prayed with us. His father was Presbyterian pastor. He said that unless Greg has surgery he will not live. "I will do my best, and trust God to heal Greg." Melvine and I followed Greg on the gurney to the operating room, kissed him and had to walk away. We got on the elevator and went to the ground floor. We were silent as we walked hand in hand in a rose garden. We were praying silently. God gave me a Scripture I had learned years before and committed it to memory. Here it is recorded in the Book of 1 Peter: 1 Peter 5:7 7 Casting all your care upon Him (Jesus); for He careth for you. KJV I spoke that Scripture out loud so Melvine could hear it. It became a Rhema Word for us. Greg was awfully sick. The surgeon found gangrene in the belly and had to remove a foot of intestines. Greg was placed in an oxygen tent. All the medicines were of no effect. Johnny Smith, a layman from the First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Birmingham, drove to Montgomery at the prompting of the Holy Spirit to pray with Greg and he did. The doctor told the nurse to give Greg a bottle of milk. A miracle occurred. He was able to hold it down and from that moment on his healing began. We are at the same juncture with Melvine. We have chosen life and not death. We are looking to Jesus once again for His healing virtue. We believe He cares for Melvine and wants to heal her. What a difference it has made in Melvine's life. New energy, color in her face, new strength and stamina are showing up daily. We are grateful for Hospice Care and the professionals who come to our home to help Melvine and us. They can see the difference and comment on it. In addition, we are counting on your continued prayers and thoughts for Melvine's healing. In the 6th chapter of Ephesians the Apostle Paul asked this congregation to pray for him. So, we are in good company when we ask for your prayers. Many cards are coming in daily for Melvine and me. Thanks for writing and praying. Have a blessed Saturday and Sunday. Jesus still makes house calls.
