I can remember several key moments in our lives, Melvine and me, when we were faced with a death and life challenge, or a healing challenge when we turned to God with the faith God gave us in that moment to trust His Word.
When Greg was about 9 months old he contacted measles, the worst kind. We lived in Brownville, Alabama near Evergreen, Alabama. Because of the high fever, Greg's intestines telescoped and there was a major blockage. Our general surgeon was not skilled enough to do the operation, but had us go to Montgomery where the best pediatric surgeon in the Southeast practiced. He called ahead and got this surgeon to agree to operate on Greg.
I drove Melvine and Greg to Montgomery to the hospital. Our hearts were heavy. We had already lost a boy through a miscarriage, and a daughter who was a still birth. We wondered will God require us to lose another child?
Meanwhile, after we got Greg registered and in his room, the nurses prepared Greg for surgery. The doctor came in and prayed with us. His father was Presbyterian pastor. He said that unless Greg has surgery he will not live. "I will do my best, and trust God to heal Greg."
Melvine and I followed Greg on the gurney to the operating room, kissed him and had to walk away. We got on the elevator and went to the ground floor. We were silent as we walked hand in hand in a rose garden. We were praying silently. God gave me a Scripture I had learned years before and committed it to memory. Here it is recorded in the Book of 1 Peter:
1 Peter 5:7
7 Casting all your care upon Him (Jesus); for He careth for you.
KJV
I spoke that Scripture out loud so Melvine could hear it. It became a Rhema Word for us. Greg was awfully sick. The surgeon found gangrene in the belly and had to remove a foot of intestines. Greg was placed in an oxygen tent. All the medicines were of no effect. Johnny Smith, a layman from the First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Birmingham, drove to Montgomery at the prompting of the Holy Spirit to pray with Greg and he did. The doctor told the nurse to give Greg a bottle of milk. A miracle occurred. He was able to hold it down and from that moment on his healing began.
We are at the same juncture with Melvine.
We have chosen life and not death. We are looking to Jesus once again for His healing virtue. We believe He cares for Melvine and wants to heal her. What a difference it has made in Melvine's life. New energy, color in her face, new strength and stamina are showing up daily.
We are grateful for Hospice Care and the professionals who come to our home to help Melvine and us. They can see the difference and comment on it.
In addition, we are counting on your continued prayers and thoughts for Melvine's healing. In the 6th chapter of Ephesians the Apostle Paul asked this congregation to pray for him. So, we are in good company when we ask for your prayers.
Many cards are coming in daily for Melvine and me.
Thanks for writing and praying.
Have a blessed Saturday and Sunday. Jesus still makes house calls.
