Job Seeking
Bob Smith was sick of his job and was determined to find work elsewhere. But no matter how hard he tried, his reputation as someone who was not dedicated to the job, seemed to follow him around.
One day the phone rang at his office. Although Bob did not usually pick up the phone, he picked it up and said hello. “Hi” said the man on the line, “I have an unusual question to ask you, I’m looking into a fellow Bob Smith for a position in my company. Do you know this fellow?”
"Sure I know him," responded Bob with a smile. “Tell me,” asked the man. “Is he consistent with his work? Does he always show up on time?” “Well I’ll be honest with you” Bob truthfully replied, “I’m not so consistent myself, but whenever I’m here he’s here!”

An Amazing Rendition of the U.S. National Anthem
500 high school choir students sing the U.S. National anthem in a high-rise hotel. Each night before curfew, they gather on their balconies to sing the Star-Spangled Banner from the balconies of the 18-story atrium at Louisville's downtown Hyatt Regency as part of the Kentucky Music Educators convention. You can’t help it but get goose bumps when you hear them sing.
You will love the arrangement and close harmony and blending of young voices that will make you proud to be an American.
Click Here to watch this video. It will bless you.
I want to thank Gay Shepherd of Elon, NC for this video. She cares enough to send the best. Gay and Frank are wonderful people and are known throughout the IPHC, and especially the family and friends of Emmanuel College.

Joe finally summoned up the courage to ask Amy out to the baseball game.  It would be their first date.  Amy told him she had never been to a game before.
When Joe went to pick her up for their baseball game date, Amy was not ready.  Joe waited and waited patiently.  Finally, Amy was ready and they went to the baseball game.
They arrived during the 5th inning. "The score is 0 to 0," she heard a nearby fan say.
"Oh, good," she cooed to Joe, "then we haven't missed a thing."

The Farmer's Son tries out for football in college

The farmer's son was a huge, burly young man.  As a college freshman he figured he'd try out for the football team.
"Can you tackle?" asked the coach.  "Watch this," said the farmer's son, who proceeded to run smack into a telephone pole, shattering it to splinters.
"Wow," said the coach. "I'm impressed. Can you run?"  "Of course I can run," said the farmer's son.  He was off like a shot, and in just over nine seconds had run a hundred-yard dash.
"Great!" enthused the coach. "But can you pass a football?"  The freshman rolled his eyes and hesitated for a few seconds. "Well, sir," he said, "if I can swallow it, I can probably pass it."

No amount of reasoning seemed to help.
The pilot picked up the PA mike in the cockpit and announced, "Children, this is the captain speaking. Don't make me stop this airplane and come back there!"

PictureCoach Monty Williams
Andrew Hess is Senior Editor of ChurchLeaders.com.
There was a powerful moment on TNT’s Halftime Report recently when they stopped talking about basketball and showed a clip from the funeral of Ingrid Williams.
Ingrid was the wife of Monty Williams, Oklahoma City Thunder’s assistant basketball coach.
She died in a tragic accident, leaving behind her husband and five children.
Monty Williams shared how hard the situation was for his family, but then strengthened the faith of all in attendance.
Williams said, “God causes all things to work out. You can’t quit. You can’t give in.”
He also said, “Let’s not lose sight of what’s important. God loves us. God is love. My wife is where we all need to be…”

There is more to this story you need to read that I just found out on Saturday. Here it is:
Stephanie Gardner, wife of Bishop Talmadge Gardner, is the principal of Oklahoma Christian School where Coach Monty and Ingrid Williams have their children attending. This story has been published In the Daily Oklahoman as well.
Stephanie wrote in an email response to my communication with her, “I sat in the room one day prior to this incident and was moved to tears as Coach Williams shared his personal testimony.  Mrs. Ingrid was such a humble yet unbelievably impactful woman of grace.  I then sat in the memorial service and was moved to tears again as Coach Monty Williams encouraged everyone not to lose sight of the fact that God loves us and this will all work out.  He is a man of God, she is a woman of God and they are a family of God who lead by example.
“I am the elementary principal at Oklahoma Christian School. www.ocssaints.org. It is a nondenominational school with 52 churches represented on our campus. We have over 1,000 students 450 of them are my elementary students. We were just named a Great Expectations Model School and God has been so good to us. Next year, we will be adding two full day Pre-K classes.

The Promotion of Chaplain, Lieutenant Colonel Randy Sellers, USAF, by Chaplain (Colonel) Jerry L. Jones, Director/Endorser of Chaplains Ministries, IPHC

PicturePinning on the silver leaves for the rank of Lieutenant Colonel
Friday, February 26, 2016 was a great day for God and Country, the United States Air Force, the International Pentecostal Holiness Church, and especially for Chaplain Randy Sellers and his family, as he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel at the Little Rock Air Force Base Chapel.
Chaplain, Colonel James Tims the Air Mobility Command Chaplain, presided over the ceremony. The 19
th Air Lift Wing Commander, Colonel Chip Brown, Randy’s immediate supervisor was also in attendance and the chapel was nearly full to capacity with Airmen and civilian personnel to witness this great occasion which is a testament to the spiritual impact Chaplain Sellers has on this Air Force base.
Chaplain Sellers was blessed with the attendance of many immediate family members as his wife Sheila, daughter Haley and son-in-law Justin Stephen, son Jonathan and his fiancé Summer Hill, his other daughter Dana was not present as she is in the Peace Corps, sister Teresa Sellers, in-laws Gary and Bea Vavak, and his cousin Bonnie May.  Also in attendance was Chaplain (COL) Jerry L. Jones, US Army Retired (endorser for Chaplain Ministries, IPHC), his wife Cynthia, and the former Bishop of the Heartland Conference, the Rev. Dr.  Frank Tunstall and his wife Lu.
The promotion ceremony began with prayer followed by a historical review by Chaplain Tims of Chaplain Sellers’ service in the Air Force.  A paramount statement about him is that he possesses a “deep spiritual reservoir” to provide pastoral care to those in the Air Force community. Chaplain Tims then promoted Chaplain Sellers to Lieutenant Colonel and then presided over his “Oath of Office.”
Chaplain Sellers presented a moving acceptance speech focusing on how much the Air Force means to him and his family, especially Little Rock Air Force Base.  He also spoke about his and Sheila’s preparation for life, giving credit to his mother and father and his in-laws.  Important also was his acknowledgement of his family of faith; those who had prepared him for his journey as an Air Force Chaplain.  And of course, Chaplain Sellers followed the great military tradition of giving flowers to all the family ladies in his life and a coin to all the men.
The ceremony was concluded with prayer by Chaplain Jones as Chaplain Tims and Dr. Tunstall gathered around Randy and Sheila and laid hands on them for God’s continued blessings upon them and their ministry to the Air Force.
Another military tradition is that when one is promoted, the promotee provides a reception and/or a meal for those in attendance.  Chaplain Sellers provided both; a reception in the chapel for all those in attendance, and a buffet meal at the base Officers’ Club for family, his own staff, and special guests.
Congratulations Chaplain, Lieutenant Colonel Randy Sellers!  We look forward to hearing more great things about you in the future.

A Tip

What's the difference between giving God a tithe and giving a tip?    A tip is 15%.

Please come to the front
A pastor was planning a wedding at the close of the Sunday morning service. After the benediction he had planned to call the couple down to be married for a brief ceremony before the congregation.
For the life of him, he couldn't think of the names of those who were to be married. "Will those wanting to get married please come to the front?" he requested.
Immediately, nine single ladies, three widows, four widowers, and six single men stepped to the front.

The Repeat Sermon

A  pastor reported to his new church congregation.  Several of the Great Old Saints had held on to life just long enough for their new pastor.  Consequently in four weeks he did eight funerals.
He did not have time to write his regular Sunday Sermons.  So he used the sermon from the Sunday before--3 more times.
The Council went to the Bishop complaining that this new pastor had used the same sermon 4 times in a row.  The Bishop asked what the sermon was about.   The Council couldn't remember, they scratched their heads and hemmed and hawed--but they really couldn't remember.
The Bishop said, "Let him use it one more time."

Update on the Date for the Artery By-pass Surgery for H. Larry Jones--Tuesday, March 1, 2016

A military term I learned in the Marine Corps was "As You Were." What does it mean? I am so glad you asked.
"As You Were" means ignore anything you just saw. Forget everything I just said, or in this case, what I had written yesterday about the surgery of the Rev. Mr. H. Larry Jones. It can also mean "nothing just happened."

In the case of my reporting about the surgery of H. Larry Jones, the pastor of St. Paul's Pentecostal Holiness Church in Swansea, South Carolina, I am not denying the fact that I gave you an incorrect announcement. It was my impression when I received the oral communication that Brother Jones was having surgery on Thursday morning. That was not the case.
Bishop Greg Amos, Superintendent of the South Carolina Conference wrote me immediately when he read the blog I had published about one of his outstanding pastors. Pastor H. Larry Jones, known as "The Little Bishop of South Carolina," will have his by-pass artery surgery on Tuesday morning, March 1. He is still in the hospital and will be there for his surgery and recovery. He is a patient in the Palmetto Health Heart Hospital in Columbia, SC.

"T. Ralph Davis--A Man With a Servant Heart" by Shirley G. Spencer

2/27/2016

Seldom does one find a pastor who is as comfortable in the church kitchen as in the pulpit. Most would prefer a dress suit to an apron.
That, however, has not been the case with the Rev. T. Ralph Davis. Throughout his life and ministry, Brother Ralph has maintained a healthy balance between providing nourishment for the spirit and the body. This characteristic became obvious early in his life. His mother often remarked that Ralph was the one who could be found helping her in the kitchen as she prepared meals for her large family.
Theodore Ralph Davis was one of five children (two girls and three boys) born to Lafe and Ela (Beam) Davis. He arrived on August 2, 1928, in Norge, Oklahoma. His father, Lafe, worked for Frisco Railroad.
Ralph was born again at age 17 at the Cyril (Oklahoma) Assembly of God. He graduated
from Cyril High School in 1946. (Later he attended Southwestern Bible College [now Southwestern Christian University]).
PicturePrivate T. Ralph Davis
On October 17, 1950, he was drafted into the US Army during the Korean Conflict and served Uncle Sam until December 1952 as company clerk in several venues in Germany. His rank when he left the Army was Sergeant E-5.
Following his tour of military duty, Ralph took a Civil Service position at nearby Ft. Sill as a GS-3, Personnel Office. Later he worked in the Comptroller Section at Ft. Sill Headquarters until January 1954.
During these transitions, Ralph never wavered from his Christian faith and commitment. At the West Oklahoma Conference Camp Meeting in 1955, he met the girl of his dreams. He says as soon as he saw her he knew LaVeta Darrah was the girl with whom he wanted to spend the rest of his life. They married on November 9, 1956, at the Lookeba Pentecostal Holiness Church. The newly-weds made their home in Cyril and attended the Cyril PH Church.
Ralph served the local congregation wherever he was needed. He taught Sunday school, served as Sunday school superintendent, and even played the piano. But, as his daughter, Paula, recalls, one could always find her dad in the kitchen helping out. “He was the one who planned the pancake breakfasts, Valentine banquets, Indian taco suppers, spaghetti suppers, and Sunday dinners. He loved working in the local church.”
About the same time Ralph’s father died in February 1966, God began to speak to Ralph’s heart about a call into the ministry. Over the next few months, he heard several messages based on Isaiah 6:8: “Whom shall I send and who will go for us?” He accepted those words as confirmation that God was, indeed, calling him into pastoral ministry. In August of that year, the Examination Committee of the West Oklahoma Conference licensed him and offered him a pastorate at the Mountain View Church. He accepted the offer and preached his third sermon as pastor of that congregation.

PictureRalph and LaVita Davis
Ralph pastored PH churches in Mountain View, Kingfisher, McLoud, Apache First, Apache Bethel, Hinton, and Anadarko. He served 12 years as secretary-treasurer of his home conference and six years as conference superintendent. Ralph retired from full-time ministry in 1999, but not before compiling a historical account of the conference titled, I Remember When. He also wrote his own story for his offspring: two daughters, Paula Ackley and Darla Brookshire, four grand-children, and four great grandchildren, and one on the way.
When Paula and her husband launched Calvary Temple, a nondenominational church in Cyril, Ralph and LaVeta threw themselves into the project. “When we started our church, the first thing dad said was that he had always wanted to have a coffee house,” recalls Paula. “As soon as we obtained the proper facilities, we opened our first coffee house. He and a few of the church people served a full breakfast every Saturday morning for whoever wanted to come. He ran the coffee house until his health began to wane, but even that didn’t stop him. He went from serving a full breakfast on Saturdays to opening from 10 until 11 a.m. for the townsmen to gather for a morning coffee break. Many of the men would stop in to discuss the world’s problems over a cup of Joe and a piece of cake or cookies. I often would find them huddled in prayer.”
About a year ago, Brother Ralph hung a sign on the Coffee House window that read: “Due to health reasons, I will be shutting down the Coffee House for a while.” (Notice that he left it open-ended.) Though he has been diagnosed with the early stages of Alzheimers, he shows up at the church office from time to time to help wherever he can. He also rises every morning and prepares a full breakfast for him and LaVeta … and whoever else happens to stop by.

Romans 10:14-17

How then shall they call on Him in Whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of Whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written:

"How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the Gospel of peace,
Who bring glad tidings of good things!"

16 But they have not all obeyed the Gospel. For Isaiah says, "LORD, who has believed our report?"   17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.

Prayer for Larry Jones, "The Little Bishop," of the South Carolina Conference who had three artery by-passes after a Mild Heart Attack

2/25/2016

Official word has reached Hugh's News that my good friend, the Rev. Mr. Larry Jones of the South Carolina Conference has had a mild heart attack. He is known as "The Little Bishop" of the great South Carolina Conference.
On Thursday Bishop Leon O. Stewart, former General Superintendent of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church, informed me that Larry was having open heart surgery in a hospital in Columbia, SC, to replace three arteries that had significant blockages. Larry had asked Bishop Stewart to call me to publish this prayer request in Hugh's News.
As I recall Larry Jones is the pastor of St. Paul's Pentecostal Holiness Church in Swansea, SC. He is a gifted writer and he is noted for writing and compiling the memoirs of the South Carolina Conference. I have been to Lake City, SC, many times for their annual conferences and he always does a superb job in honoring those who have died.
Larry Jones is a man of faith, filled with the Holy Spirit, and loved by many people. He has always been gracious to me.
Larry and Linda, his lovely wife, have been and continue to be a blessing to many people. Larry has been the pastor of St.. Paul's Church for many years. What a life and legacy God has allowed him to have.
Let us lift up our brother in Christ in prayer and ask God to restore him to health, heal his body, and extend his life for many years to come. Let us pray for Linda, too, that God will give her additional strength and grace doing these days of  anxiety and stress. I pray that she will be victorious.

Chaplain Randy Sellers will be officially Promoted to the Rank of Lieutenant Colonel this morning at eleven o'clock

2/25/2016

It is with a sense of sanctified pride and personal joy that I am able to announce the promotion of Chaplain, Major Randy L. Sellers to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was one of the very first civilian pastors I endorsed after becoming the director/endorser of Chaplains Ministries, IPHC.
I received a personal invitation from Command Chaplain , Colonel James D. Tims, Air Mobility Command inviting Melvine and me to Chaplain Randy Sellers' promotion.
The promotion ceremony will be conducted today, Friday, February twenty-six at eleven o'clock in the morning at the Base Chapel at Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas.
I must tell you that Sheila, Randy's effervescent and delightful wife, is the real motivation for his success. She has fit perfectly into the Air Force community, and has found her niche as a chaplain's wife as well as the wife of a very influential officer like Randy. It is so very important for a man to marry the right woman. Sheila is the best of the best. I applaud her. They work together as a team and bring a high quality of leadership wherever they serve.
Chaplain Randy Sellers has demonstrated executive abilities by his staff planning in the creation of this promotion ceremony. He is to be commended for his excellent staff work. He has proved he is ready for the next higher level of leadership in the Air Force as a chaplain and an officer.
It was my privilege and honor to be present five years ago when Randy Sellers was promoted to the rank of Major on March 1, 2011, at Vance Air Force Base, Enid, OK. It was one of the best attended promotion ceremonies I have ever attended in that the leadership of the International Pentecostal Holiness was well represented. Bishop and Mrs. Chris Thompson, Chairman of Chaplains Ministries IPHC, and Bishop and Mrs. Frank G. Tunstall, Superintendent of the Heartland Conference.  Marilyn Burrows, wife of Damon Burrows, was present along with her son, David Burrows, who resided in Enid, OK.
I wish Melvine and I could be present. Our thoughts and prayers will be with them.
It is my understanding that Retired Army Chaplain (Colonel) Jerry and Cynthia Jones, Director/Endorser of Chaplains Ministries, IPHC will be present and Jerry will give the benediction. In addition, the Rev. Dr. Frank and Lu Tunstall, former superintendent of Heartland Conference, will be present as well.
A promotion ceremony is one of many opportunities in the military when we can celebrate with our chaplains, officers, and enlisted servicemen and women. I commend our leadership who take the time to offer their ministry of presence at times like these and to represent the International Pentecostal Holiness Church as well as their own personal support of our chaplains and their families.

Romans 8:18-27
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. 19 For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him Who subjected it in hope; 21 because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. 23 Not only that, but we also who have the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. 24 For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.

26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
