Greetings Pastor Jon: Thanks for keeping us up to date concerning your father’s health. Janice and I are deeply saddened at the passing of your dad. You know the providential circumstances that will not allow us to be there in person to speak about our friend. Being asked to speak at your dad’s home-going service is a great honor, and we deeply regret not being able to fulfill this request. Our friendship with Wes and Miss Peggie goes back nearly 40 years. Without question, the Potter’s came to the Mid-Atlantic Conference at the right time. Coming to Baltimore placed him in our strongest missions-supporting church. Not long after Wesley arrived, he discovered a problem that not only affected his church but the whole conference. Wes’s leadership qualities were on full display as he quickly brought the problem to light and forged a solution that brought healing to the situation. It was no surprise to anyone that at the next conference Wesley was elected to the conference board on which we served together for the rest of his tenure in the conference. Under his leadership, the Baltimore church experienced growth and soon it was obvious that a larger facility was needed. Wesley led in the sale of the old property and the purchase of a new site to be known as Kingsway Christian Center. The transition from the sale to the start of building on the new property was supposed to take one year. Three years later, with a dwindling congregation and with Baltimore County throwing every road block in the book at them, they were still stuck in a school auditorium. Wes asked me to speak to his church family on a Sunday night. There may have been 60 people present --a far cry form the nearly 300 he left the old building with-- and some of those wondered why they ever made such a bold move. Not so Brother Wesley. He never looked back and today the Kingsway church is one of the finest facilities in the Mid-Atlantic Conference. Leadership counts, and Wesley Potter had that in abundance. It was no surprise when Wes was elected as Conference Bishop. Again under his leadership the conference experienced rapid growth. At first he continued to serve as Pastor at Kingsway as well as Conference Bishop for 8 years. Talk about spinning plates! Finally the needs of the conference were such that a pastor was elected for the church and Wesley served the remaining 6 years of his tenure as full-time Bishop. The MAC owes a great debt to the Potter’s for their 23 years of sacrificial service. Wesley loved people and was generous with his time to make each person feel special. As I visited churches in the conference, I was always asked about the Potter’s. The Potter’s treated us to many fellowship opportunities where pastoral couples could openly share the joys and challenges of ministry. We shared heart-to-heart and those meetings gave us courage to press on. Brother Potter loved to laugh. He always had a story to tell. Sometimes the humor was at his own expense. He was preaching one Sunday and in his message he used the lines from the well-known song, “Home on the Range. When he got to the line, “Where the deer and the antelope play,” he said, “Where the deer and the cantaloupe play.” The congregation burst out laughing. He looked at Miss Peggie and asked, “Why are they laughing?” Miss Peggie said, “Wes it’s not where the cantaloupe play, it’s where the antelope play.” Wesley said, “That’s what I said-–where the deer and the cantaloupe play.” The people laughed again and Wesley pressed on. There are way too many personal remembrances to recount-–Homecoming services, our 25th anniversary celebration with Janna singing our special song, revivals preached, camp meetings, IPHC meetings attended, family visits, phone visits after Wes stepped down as Bishop and moved back to SC and then on to Texas. As you know Wesley struggled with his memory at the last, and we were not able to speak with him on the phone as before. Some weeks ago Miss Peggie called and told me Wesley wanted to speak to me. He took the phone but then had problems remembering what he wanted to tell me. Miss Peggie reminded him as she knew the reason he wanted to call. He said, “I love you, Wes.” I knew that but it was sweet to my ears to hear him say it.” Now that Wesley has moved into the Father’s House, I know he’ll save me a place at the table and we’ll finish that conversation. To the family, let me tell you what you already know so well. Wesley loved you with all his heart—it was a sacrificial love that kept on giving. As I say, I know you know that but I pray it will be not only a sweet sound to your ears but a healing balm to your grieving hearts. "Now all glory to God, who is able to keep you from falling away and will bring you with great joy into His glorious presence without a single fault. All glory to Him Who alone is God, our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord. All glory, majesty, power, and authority are His before all time, and in the present, and beyond all time! Amen" (Jude 24-25). [Editor's comment: What a marvelous eulogy Bishop Wesley Russ has written about his treasured and trusted friend, Bishop Wesley Potter. I read ever word with great interest and confirm what Wesley Russ has said about Wesley Potter. Thank you Wesley for such a magnificent tribute to a great man, a genuine Christian, a Spirit-lead and anointed leader, and a friend to many. May God bless his memory and motivate us to give our very best to God and His people.] I am so glad to get his one behind me. They took vials of blood from my arm, weighted me, took my blood pressure, etc. I talked with the medical doctor who will put me to sleep during the operation.
I will have to be at the hospital at 5:30 a. m. on Thursday, September 7. My surgery will be the first one and that is at 7 a. m. I told the nurse that I didn't think God got up so early. Of course, we know our God never slumbers or sleeps. I will be required to spend the night. Hopefully, I will be able to come home on Friday. September 8. I need your prayers not only for the surgeon, the anesthesiologist, and the team, but also me the patient. I have lost 20 pounds in recent weeks because I was sick with no appetite, little energy, and virtually no motivation. I am over that. I have learned to eat until I am satisfied I learned Thursday evening that Bishop Wesley Potter, former superintendent of the Mid-Atlantic Conference, died at 6:30 p. m.
We are grateful to God that his suffering is now gone forever and that his soul and spirit are presently in heaven. He has seen Jesus and that is what heaven's all about. I understand that Wesley's body will be shipped to Florence, South Carolina. I am not sure when the memorial service will be held. As information unfolds, I will keep you abreast of the news. Our hearts go out to Peggie Flowers Potter, his wife, Jay, Jon, and Jana and their respective families. Wesley Potter was a dear friend of mine. Today was a red letter day for Hugh's News, Inc.
We needed $270 to make the budget for August of $1,000. So many people participated and gave generously. Today, two subscribers helped us to reach our goal. First, there was Air Force Chaplain, Lt Colonel, Randy and Sheila Sellers. They are currently stationed at Randolf AFB, San Antonio, TX. They gave a substantial gift via their credit card. When I checked our street side mail box there was only one letter. It was from Anita and Allon Gentry with a check inside. They reside in Valrico, Florida. Anita's words of appreciation for Hugh's News was so encouraging and affirming. Their personal check help put us over the top. It takes a team to put this newsletter together. I am dependent on Mel Tinney, my webmaster for about 9 or 10 years. He does so much in the background to keep this ship afloat. He sizes all the photos and many other things. And of course, you, our subscribers and readers, are what it all about, and you have shown repeatedly you love this ministry and are willing to support it. We count on your support. I want to thank all who gave to help us to reach our budget for August. We did come through the summer without participating in a summer slump. PTL! The assessment process is underway in Texas as the Texas Latin Conference anxiously awaits the arrival of Disaster Relief USA. Webster, Texas is a small suburb located on the southeast side of Houston. It is home to Oasis of Hope PHC, a thriving congregation pastored by Jaime and Mary Alice Trevino.
Two areas that were hit hard by Harvey are Dickinson and League City, towns further southeast of Houston and closer to the Bay. DRUSA will base its feeding operations at Oasis of Hope and focus its initial efforts on providing hot meals for residents, emergency works, rescuers and volunteers in Webster, Dickinson and the League City area. Click Here to hear the appeal by National DRUSA Coordinator Bill Terry. *** PRAY & GIVE Disaster Relief USA (DRUSA) has received numerous phone calls, text messages and emails from the IPHC family inquiring how people can help. This is going to be a long disaster relief and recovery process. First and foremost, the Texas Latin Conference in association with DRUSA, need your prayers for wisdom to establish short and long-term goals for this deployment. Secondly, this effort will be costly. Your financial support will be crucial. It is because of your gifts that we are able to serve and support those who have been affected. If you would like to contribute to the relief process, please make your check payable to DRUSA and send it to: DRUSA Project 02261p P O Box 270420 Oklahoma City, OK 73137 Or, you may give online by clicking this link: https://give.iphc.org/discipleship/224378. *** DRINKING WATER IS ON THE WAY At a time when the City of Houston is inundated with water, one would think water is the last thing anyone would want more of. The truth is that during this critical time, clean drinking water is of paramount importance. Thankfully, two pastors from the Cornerstone Conference were thinking ahead. Living Word Church, pastored by Rick Haug in Maiden, North Carolina and Upward Christian Fellowship, pastored by Anthony Craver in Hendersonville, North Carolina got together and acquired multiple pallets of bottled water. It is believed that this shipment will have between 20 to 25,000 bottles of water. Thank you to Pastors Rick Haug and Anthony Craver for spearheading this effort. The truck is tentatively scheduled to arrive in Webster over the weekend. Happy Anniversary!! May God continue to bless you!! Thank you for your great contribution to the Kingdom of God!!
Wesley Russ has just posted a comment on your blog post, Will You Receive the Benediction?8/31/2017 Thanks for your prayers and for the prayers of your many readers.
Janice and Wesley Russ Great to hear the Blue Bird Whisper of Great News from the Hugh's News about the 65th Wedding Anniversary of our Great Leaders--Miss Donna and Bishop Leon Stewart!
Our daughter was named after Ms. Donna, commemorating the virgin visit of the Blessed Couple to India. What a Wonderful Ministry of Bishop Leon Stewart in the Indian Cities of Chennai and New Delhi. The humblest moment of My Life was when the Bishop asked and received Communion from me, in Chennai in 1983! We are always proud of this Blessed Couple! Multiplied Blessings to them at this milestone. We Celebrate His Goodness and Faithfulness for them! So much rain has fallen in and around Houston, and the ground has become so saturated, so deep, that skyscrapers are now in danger of FALLING OVER! The one-thousand foot tall JP MORGAN Building in downtown Houston is being evacuated right now due to "foundation issues."
This means the ground beneath the skyscraper may no longer be firm enough to support the building! If this is correct - and local authorities believe it is -- the thousand-foot-tall building could literally fall over ! Bear in mind that skyscrapers are designed to "sway" in heavy winds. Normally, that's a good thing; it prevents the buildings from snapping." But in a case like this, where the foundation is compromised due to moist soil, that same "swaying" could very well lead to "tipping over." And also bear in mind that wind in and around Houston is STILL being affected by the remnants of Hurricane Harvey. Harvey returned to the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and is strengthening again right now. At 4:00 p. m. EDT, Hurricane Hunter Aircraft flew through the "eye" of the former hurricane and found wind has increased today from 45 MPH to 50 MPH and the central barometric pressure had dropped from 1006mb to 994 mb. As central pressure drops, wind speeds pick-up. If those winds start hitting this building, it could very well fall right over. No one is sure how this will turn out, but authorities in Houston are erring on the side of caution and evacuating the building. As a high school football standout at North Florida Christian School in Tallahassee, FL. Travis Blanks dreamed of playing at the next level. Travis received more than 50 scholarship offers from the likes of Alabama, Florida State, USC and Auburn and was rated the #15 overall player and #2 safety in the nation by ESPN in the 2011 recruiting class. In the end, his heart led him to Clemson University where he knew he could grow into a better football player and person. A three-year starter at Clemson at both safety (2013) and linebacker (2015), Travis earned Freshman All-American honors in 2012. Although he battled two ACL injuries during his time at Clemson, Travis finished his career with 129 tackles, five for loss, 11 pass break ups, five quarterback pressures and one interception in 1,543 snaps over 39 career games. Travis was named a permanent team captain of the 2015 Clemson team that defeated Oklahoma in the 2015 Orange Bowl, a part of the College Football Playoff and played for the National Championship against Alabama. Travis graduated from Clemson in December of 2015 with a degree Sociology and a minor in Religion. After working in Banking where he served as a residential mortgage lender, Travis found his way back to Clemson where he now serves as a Development Officer for IPTAY. Emmanuel College is excited to welcome Travis to campus on Tuesday, September 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the John W. Swails Center. Travis will not only share his story but will touch on the importance of being a STUDENT athlete. His passion for the game of football is still evident as he serves on the coaching staff at Walhalla High School and travels the southeast as a motivational speaker visiting churches, youth groups, and athletic teams. What is Travis' ultimate goal? To use the gifts and abilities God has given him to serve others. So thankful for Hugh's News that a dear friend forwards it to me. Praying for Hugh and wish him a speedy recovery. we have been blessed by Hugh's life and ministry.
Thanks for sharing Leon and Donna Stewart's 65th anniversary. we have been blessed to call them friends for many years and enjoyed having them in our home. Hebrews 12:2-3
2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith, Who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider Him Who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. NIV Hebrews 12:2-3 2 Looking unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith, Who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. Click Here to watch this amazing magician show. I hope you will read Wesley Russ' message and be touched by the faith of this Godly man and his wife. I received this sacred and solemn message from Bishop Wesley Russ of the Mid-Atlantic Conference concerning his dear wife, Janice. I am honored to be given the privilege to share his message with so many people who read Hugh's News and know how to pray. We want our voices to be heard in heaven on behalf of Janice Robinson Russ. God is Sovereign and will always have the final Word. Nothing is impossible for God. Sometimes it seems that Heaven is silent, but we will continue praying until God answers. Now, hear the heart of Wesley Russ who dearly loves his wife and has taken excellent care of her in her battle with throat cancer: "Janice has been placed on Hospice. This is just another step in our faith journey. From the start we’ve known that we are in God’s care—this is such a comfort. God is the Redeemer/Healer and we trust Him in all things and His will shall be done. "We would like to thank Dr. Morgan for keeping his Hugh’s News family informed and for the many friends who have stormed the Throne of God for our need. God answers prayer and His answer is always best. God’s mercies are new every morning and we expect good things from the Hand of our Father." [If you would like to send a card or letter to Wesley and Janice Russ here is their mailing address: Wesley and Janice Russ 4100 Kenny Street Beltsville, MD 20705-2732 Wesley and Janice have been our friends for decades. I am in contact with them almost daily. They are choice servants of the Lord Jesus Christ and have given their best in ministry and service in the churches of the IPHC, and leadership in the Mid-Atlantic Conference where Wesley served as World Missions Director, Assistant Conference Superintendent and then Superintendent. Janice did the accounting and bookkeeping for the conference for at least 30 years. They are exceptional people who love everybody. Wesley is my best friend in the known world. They have the gift of hospitality and often have people staying in their home in Beltsville, MD. Their love for people of other countries is notable, genuine and real. I am praying for a creative miracle for Janice. God will make the final decision about that. He sees a bigger picture than I cannot see. I trust His sovereignty and divine purpose for Wesley and Janice Russ.] We are finally counting down to the day when I will have the prostate surgery that I have needed for some time. Dr. Gary Walton will do the roto-rooter style operation to reduce the size of the prostate from the inside. The surgery is called "Turp." Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a surgery used to treat urinary problems due to an enlarged prostate. They say that if a man lives long enough he will have an enlarged prostate or a prostate problem. I am asking that you mention my name in prayer to God when you pray. Make sure you pray in the Name of Jesus. Through a urine specimen my urologist discovered I had a urinary tract infection. Therefore, I was required to take 7 days of an antibiotic which cleared that problem up. My urologist would not clear me for a total right hip replacement with my two presenting problems. I believe God was protecting me so that when I have the prostate surgery I will have everything in proper order. As soon as I heal from this prostate surgery, I hope to get my right hip replaced by Dr. Mahoney in Athens, GA. He is the best orthopedic surgery in the country. We are blessed to have some of the best hospitals in the nation, as well as outstanding doctors and specialists of all kinds. This morning, I am scheduled to have my pre-op at St. Mary's Hospital. Thank you for your prayers for me. The Business Leaders Network held its first dinner in Fall of 2014, and was designed as a fundraising event that brought business leaders together to meet and fellowship with peers, as well as hear about the vision, mission and various opportunities at SCU from President Wenyika.
Thousands of people drive on Highway 29 each day, through Franklin Springs, passing Emmanuel College and on to Royston. It may be small-town America, yet it’s a very busy highway with many driving through who need love, encouragement or prayer but they are hesitant to step through church doors to receive it. This past summer, EC Alumnus Austin Farrow (’16) and EC student Travis Todd, decided to do something about that. Austin, Youth and College Pastor at Franklin Springs IPHC, and Travis, Associate Pastor, were given a Friday afternoon off. Instead of going home to relax, they saw this as an opportunity to serve. In the past few years, Austin has felt led to pray for people in public, whether it be at a business, in line at the grocery store or on EC’s campus. So, when he and Travis were told they could go home early, they came up with a way to spread God’s love throughout the community. Travis also serves as the manager of Radio Shack in Royston, so the two decided to set up a tent outside of the store with a simple sign, “Need Prayer?” “The first time we set up the tent, maybe a couple of people showed up to pray,” Austin said. “There were a lot of people honking and giving us a thumbs up, but very few stopped.” The following Friday, however, there were so many people stopping, Austin doesn’t remember sitting down. “From 12-4, it was one after the other,” Austin said. “We prayed for people that needed healing and wanted to rededicate their life to Christ. I would say to this point there have been more heart healings than physical healings.” Since then, Austin, Travis and a group of students from Emmanuel College serve at the Prayer Tent each Friday from 11a.m.-3p.m. But for them, the Prayer Tent isn’t about Franklin Springs IPHC or Emmanuel College, it’s about Jesus. “It’s about Jesus,” Austin reiterated. “That’s why we don’t put up signage promoting the Springs Church or EC, but instead try to reach out to the community through prayer because that’s what this community needs.” Where did the idea for the Prayer Tent come from? “We thought we could reach more people this way,” Austin said. “Instead of going from business to business offering to pray for people, at the prayer tent we can pray over the city and for God to touch people as they drive by.” What advice would Austin give to students interested but hesitant about getting involved in the Prayer Tent? “Before you can love someone else you have to love yourself,” Austin said. “I think the biggest thing with students is this disconnect that they don’t think they’re worthy or that they could never do something like pray for someone in public. We’ve all sinned. Don’t let your sins get in the way of getting to know God. If I could say anything to students it would be that they have an opportunity in Christ to start fresh.” Austin shared a memory of his time at Emmanuel playing for the National Championship Basketball team in 2016. “The night before the National Championship, the whole team rededicated their lives to Christ,” Austin said. “The next night we went out and won the National Championship. The last person people expected to be saved, gave his life to Christ and led the team in points in the National Championship game!” Austin says that when he points a person to the prayer tent, he wants to first know about their relationship with God. “I’ve witnessed a lot of people get burnt out,” Austin said. “They want to win the world, but can’t even clean their room. Spirituality is so much more than a Prayer Tent. It starts inside. I always want to make sure that I get my alone time with God before I come out and pray for others.” What’s next for the Prayer Tent? “Eventually I’d like to see the students take it over,” Austin said. “Maybe we’ll put up another tent in front of another business in Royston, eventually we could venture to Lavonia or Carnesville but in the end, it comes down to God saying when.” For Austin, the reason why he and Travis started the Prayer Tent is simple: the world needs to feel God’s love. “We don’t just invite people to church, we try to give them hope,” Austin said. “Even if it’s somebody just giving us thumbs up as they drive by, maybe all they need is that reminder to pray. We aren't trying to fix, change, or to get people to do anything. People just need to know they are loved. That love will change this community and it's going to happen.” The finish line is now in clear view . . . We need only $270 to reach our goal for August
We want to give praise to God and thanks to those who have given thus far in our summer drive to break the summer slump in contributions to Hugh's News, Inc. You have helped us to raise more than $1,000 to make up the deficit for the month of July. We are now only $270 away from meeting the $1,000 budget for the month of August. Three hundred dollars ($300) came in the mail on Saturday, August 26. And, $50 was received by credit card Tuesday, August 29. from Missionary Vijay Balla whose birthday is in August. On Wednesday, August 30, my good friend Malcolm Herndon sent $50 to Hugh's News, Inc. in a check. He wanted his gift to recognize and honor Ken and Jeanette Herndon Phillips for their faithfulness to their local church in Athens, Christian Life Worship Center, for many years. Ken and Jeanette give and give again of their resources not only of money but in their ministry to the people of the church, and work that needs to be done, but also to the community. So, we salute Ken and Jeanette Phillips. There is only one more day left in August to receive the $270, and that day is today. You can help us reach this attainable goal to give glory to God for His abundant supply in providing for the financial needs of Hugh's News, Inc. If you are being blessed by receiving Hugh's News & Commentary, may I encourage you to give today. Your contribution is needed, wanted, and greatly appreciated. I believe God will help us raise this money during the last two days of August. God has never failed this ministry for 20 years. Now that is a miracle. I believe in miracles. I have seen and experienced them. You may give via your credit card. Please Click Here to give by credit card. Or, you may give by writing a check made out to Hugh's News, Inc. Then, you may mail it to: Hugh's News, Inc. 17 Sweet Apple Lane Winder, GA 30680 Please include your email address so I can give you a receipt immediately for your gift to Hugh's News, Inc. Thank you in advance of your giving to Hugh's News, Inc. A blue bird whispered some good news in my right ear. He told me I could tell it. And tell it I will. It gives me a great deal of personal pleasure to inform you that Bishop Leon and Miss Donna Stewart will be celebrating their 65th Wedding Anniversary next Tuesday, September 5, 2017. Leon and Donna were married on September 5, 1952, in the Piedmont Pentecostal Holiness Church of the Virginia Conference, now called Appalachian Conference. Leon wrote, "Neither of us had any idea of the journey God had planned for our lives and ministry. We have had a wonderful trip and are still enjoying life together. God is good." What a wonderful achievement. What an example they give to us. We wish them a happy and blessed 65th wedding anniversary. Many of you, I am sure, would love to reach out and touch them by sending an anniversary card or letter.
