Shirley G. Spencer began work at the Headquarters of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church (Global Ministries Center) as executive secretary to the editor in chief of Publications. In January 1980, she was named executive editor of publications for the denomination. She was the first woman to fill that role, retiring in 2010 after 35 years of service. In her retirement, she continues to work as a freelance editor and writer.
Shirley was ordained as a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the Heartland Conference of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church in April 2010. She considers her ministry as a Bible teacher a sacred trust. She teaches an adult discipleship class and serves as an elder at River of Life Church in Oklahoma City. She has served several years on the Discipleship Ministries Board in the Heartland Conference and is presently director of Omega Ministries, serving senior and retire ministers in the conference.
During her tenure as executive editor, Shirley also served for 10 years on the Board of Directors of the Oklahoma Christian Education Association (OCEA), 29 years as secretary-treasurer of the International Pentecostal Press Association (IPPA), and 19 years as a member of the Pentecostal-Charismatic Curriculum Commission (PCCC). In 1999, she was elected as the first female to chair the PCCC. That Commission consists of representatives from five major Pentecostal denominations (IPHC, Assemblies of God, Church of God [Cleveland, TN], Pentecostal Church of God, and Church of God of Prophecy). The team develops the outlines from which the adult Sunday school curriculum is produced and published.
I plan to publish the first of several Bible studies that Shirley Spencer has done from the Book of 1 John. She has carefully researched this Book of the New Testament that will prove to he helpful for pastors, teachers, and students. The first of five studies will be published in Sunday's Special Edition of Hugh's News School of Biblical Theology.
