My Answered Prayers
Author: Greg Morgan
One of the many reasons why I loved attending Emmanuel College and Oral Roberts University (ORU) was because I got to study music. I learned so much about singing properly, playing the piano, directing music, and even playing a number of instruments. I also learned how to teach music.
Since I was a Christian who was a trained musician, I would naturally ask God to use me and my talents. Sure enough I did get many opportunities to use my music education. However, I noticed that sometimes when I would pray that the Lord would continue to use me and my talents, He would tweak it a little bit. For example, I was in a few church plays in which I which I basically acted. Oh, I may have sung one song, but mostly I just did what I was told. Over the years I have been asked not to sing for a certain event because the leader wanted a group to perform that day. I have also been told by the leadership that I didn’t need to play the piano for a particular service. I have even played for funerals and not been thanked by the families. In addition, I have not been able to sing at an event because the sound system wasn’t working. I could go on, but I think that’s enough about that.
I must say that when I majored in music I did not foresee such treatment.
So, I later tweaked my prayer to say something like this, “Lord, please use me to sing and play the piano in churches and to be a part of only the music programs in churches. Amen.” Later I almost had to laugh at my sincere prayer because it dawned on me that God is in charge of my life, not me. Wherever He needs me I will be happy to serve.
Like you the Lord has said no to some of my prayers, and sometimes it seemed like He waited until the last minute to answer me, but His timing is perfect, mine is not.
However, I did pray that my mother would not pass away during the school year when I was living near Augusta, Georgia and teaching in McDuffie County. I also prayed that she would not pass away when I moved back home. In September of 2019 when mother’s oncologist gave her 5 months to live, I prayed that mom would make it to Thanksgiving, her December birthday, Christmas, New Year’s Day, and even more in the year of 2020.
Well, mother died on January 17th of this year, so God answered all of my prayers. Of course I wish she was still with us, but I cherish the time that I had with her. It was a blessing to help her up when she would fall, or fix her supper, or drive her to get her nails done. I will miss doing those things with her. Somehow I think she is enjoying heaven, I look forward to one day seeing her again.
Finally, God may not answer all of my prayers the way I like Him to, but He always answers them.
God bless you,
Greg
