Just a week ago, Melvine cried because she was not physically able to attend the worship service at Christian Life Pentecostal Holiness Church in Athens. She was a very sick lady and needed medical assistance for which we were able to get for her.
Bonnie Patch Bender, an LPN, is a tremendous blessing to Melvine and me. She stands on ready. She is eager to serve and does so with a smile and with compassion and professionalism.
Joyce Hawkins, a friend of our family and a member of church and who serves on the church council, came immediately without any hesitation when Greg sent her a text of Melvine's condition.
Both Bonnie and Joyce stayed with Melvine for Greg and me to attend morning worship. They did a lot of work, cleaning the kitchen, vacuuming, washing clothes and bed linens. How proficient they are. I was amazed at their expertise in folding the clothes, towels, and wash cloths. After the service was over, at 12:30 p. m. Greg played for the wedding ceremony for George and Laura Swords Chassevent's wedding ceremony conducted by our pastor, Terry Kesling. Greg, as always, did a masterful job playing the piano for the wedding ceremony. I am confident we had more people for the wedding ceremony than we had in church. Many of the guests had attended the church of their choice and came immediately to the wedding after church was over. The Women's Ministries of our church furnished wonderful Sunday dinner with food aplenty for everyone who came to the reception in Stephanie's Place on the lower level of our educational wing. They prepared take out lunches for our family and for Bonnie and Joyce.
Although somewhat weak, Melvine made the effort to go to church today. It was a beautiful Sunday morning and we enjoyed singing and worshiping our blessed Lord Jesus Christ. Pastor Terry Kesling's message on God's meaning and purpose for our lives was timely for all of us. He gave Biblical examples of how God works in our lives to reveal His plan for us.
Sunday, was Pastor Appreciation Day. Lavon Revells spoke on behalf of the church council. They voted to give our pastor and our church/community life pastor a gift of money. The Women's Ministries gave gift cards to them as well as to Melvine and me since I am pastor emeritus of our church. In addition, they gave vases of flowers to the wives of the pastors. Of course they gave Melvine a dozen of large beautiful pink roses which she has now in our home to enjoy this week.
During the prayer time, Pastor Kesling came down the aisle to where Melvine and I were seated to pray for Melvine. How refreshing it was that so many people came and joined in the prayers. We were especially touched when young couples and singles came and reached out their hands toward Melvine in believing prayer.
In the meantime, our pastor prayed for several other people with special physical illnesses with several people joining with him in the laying on of hands and praying fervently.
We are blessed to have a church family that loves us and is helping us in our time of need.
On Monday, I will take Melvine to see a kidney doctor. Greg drove me to his office Sunday afternoon so I would know exactly where it is located. It is a new medical complex near to the Oconee Connector. Bonnie will come to our home and go with us in our car. We have to be there at 9 o'clock. That early morning hour is not for Melvine. However, we had no choice, it was made for her, and as I understand it, they had to work Melvine in this doctor's schedule.
At 1:30, we have to go back to the University Clinic and Blood Center to see Melvine's oncologist to get the report of the kidney specialist. Hopefully, our oncologist can attempt to explain the 14 pounds of weight loss Melvine had in a week, and tell us more about her kidneys.
I am planning on getting back to the St. Mary's Outpatient Wellness Center. I have missed exercising on the latest of modern equipment for a little over two or more weeks. I noticed today some weakness in my strength and loss of balance while taking a shower. I must have exercise. I will need people to stay with Melvine while I am gone to do my exercise program.
Jeanette Herndon Phillips is working on the plan to get people to stay with Melvine.
May I encourage you to keep sending get-well cards to Melvine. They really pick her up each day when the mail comes to our mailbox.

May God bless you for your prayers and care for Melvine and me, as well as our son, Greg. He would like to have a teaching position closer to home so he could look after us more. However, I believe God is doing a special work in Greg's life and ministry in this time of crisis in our family. Greg is thankful for his teaching position at the Thomson-McDuffie Middle School located in Thomson, Georgia near Augusta, GA.
