It is always a big event for Melvine when she can invite Claudia Strickland, a beloved friend of the Morgan family, to come to our home and take her to Lee Nails in Winder, GA, the big city near our home. No, Winder is not a big city, but it is growing. The owner of Lee Nails has been in business for more than 20 years.
Claudia and Melvine are best of friends. They like to talk and share, laugh and sing together. They are like two peas in a pod. In Georgia we might say, "They are the sweetest peaches in Georgia." By the way, have you had any good cold watermelon to eat yet. I am waiting to get my first piece of a sliced watermelon. Our neighbor, Mark Bell, gave us a bag of large vine ripened tomatoes today. There is nothing better on a hot day in July. And it is hot here in our state. However, God has provided some refreshing rain storms with cool air blowing the trees. They tell me that moving air is always cooler. That's the reason many of us have ceiling fans in our homes in addition to air conditioning.
Claudia came at 1 o'clock today. Claudia drove Melvine to Lee Nails where Lilly did Melvine's fingernails and toenails--a manicure and a pedicure. Melvine loves it, and her fingers and toenails always turn out a different color of pink. Whatever the color of pink, it looks good on Melvine.
I gave Melvine some cash money to take to pay for the cost of this cosmetic treat. I failed to give her enough money. She did not have a credit card with her and she called Greg who came to bring a credit card to pay the bill and give Lilly a tip.
Melvine is our historian. She remembers birth dates and wedding anniversaries. Today, July 25, was Daneel and Betty Von Moore le Roux's 60th wedding anniversary. They reside in Greenville, NC. So, I called Daneel's cell number and wished them a happy wedding anniversary. They were married the year before Melvine and I were married at the Draper Pentecostal Holiness Church. Melvine was in their wedding. I was present in the congregation as I was courting Melvine then. Daneel and Betty are friends for life friends and they are true blue. Daneel introduced me to Melvine. Betty and Melvine were next door neighbors.
A lesson I have had to learned one more time. I know better, I think, to sign any contract without sleeping on it. Sometimes in our haste we make a decision without counting all the costs. After I had signed the contract to purchase a walk-in tub and pay a down payment, it occurred to me I should seek some advice about it. I called a close friend to tell him. He told me about his father-in-law and mother-in-law who had purchased one some 12 years ago, and they never use it. It was awful expensive, but it so happens they never take time to sit in the tub and soak and let the jets do their work of massaging and relaxing them. I talked with Melvine and she told me she had never soaked in a bathtub. It made me re-think my decision. I called my bank at BB&T Bank and discussed the matter with my banker, and got her to stop payment on the check. I then, called the representative or salesman, and told him I wanted to cancel. He asked why would I do that? I told him the reason, and he said he had never heard of anyone who didn't use their walk-in tub. He told me he could not cancel the contract, but I could call the main office in Texas, and cancel the contract. So, I called the home office and talked with a lady who was very obliging and kind. She cancelled the contract and destroyed the check. God rescued me and I praise His Name.
So, I am telling you this story of my situation so that it may help you when you have done something similar.
I remember years ago, a lady in our church in Birmingham wanted our family to go to Knoxville to stay at a time share during the Olympics. We took the bait and went. The Time Share was lovely and most accommodating. They pressured us to purchase it, but we were wise that time and turned it down. I am glad we did. We like to go to different places for our vacations and we don't want to be locked in to one place forever. I know of people seeking to get out of their contracts.
The best thing to do, I believe, is to sleep on it, pray about it, and seek God's help. Today, He gave us favor and success like He did Nehemiah when he asked the king for a leave of absence to go back to Jerusalem to rebuild the walls that had been destroyed and the gates of the city that had been burned with fire. The king not only granted Nehemiah's request but gave him a small Calvary (a small army on horse back) to protect them. God is always the God of the Plus. He will help you and me to achieve our goals if we will ask Him to help us.
Thank you for allowing us to come into your home, office, or place of business this day with Hugh's News.
Let me leave you with a blessing or benediction written by Billy Graham:
