JANICE ROBINSON RUSS
Janice Robinson Russ, moved to her heavenly home on November 20, 2017 at 12:26 am.
She was the fifth child of the late Robert Erin and Hazel Forehand Robinson. She is survived by a brother, Gordon (Rose) Robinson and Lynda (Jim) Shirlen. She was preceded in death by Roberta June Shealy (Kenneth), Robert Alan Robinson (Dot), Hazel Ellen Robinson, and Mary Edna Robinson. Janice was born in Takoma Park, MD and lived in Washington, DC through the 9th grade.
Janice attended Anne Beers and Whittier Elementary Schools and Paul Junior High School in the District. In 1950 her family moved to Georgia and she completed high school at Emmanuel Academy in Franklin Springs, GA, where she graduated in 1952 as valedictorian of her class.
In 1964 Janice returned to Franklin Springs, GA to attend Emmanuel College. She completed six quarters of junior college work in five quarters and graduated in 1965 as valedictorian of her class. It was also here that she met her future husband, The Reverend Mr. Wesley H. Russ and they were married in Washington, DC on August 7, 1965. They recently celebrated their 50th anniversary with over 200 friends and family.
In their years as pastor, Janice served as church organist, secretary to the pastor, and Women’s Ministries leader in the local churches, and including two four-year terms as President of the Mid-Atlantic Conference W.M. They first served as pastor of a country church near Evergreen, AL four years and then moved to Gadsden, AL so Wesley could attend Jacksonville State University. While there they served one year as pastor of a mission church of the Alabama Conference of the IPHC. In 1970, Wesley was called to Atlanta (Tucker), GA to plant and build a new church. While there, construction was completed on the first phase of the Church of the Comforter.
After 7 years in the Atlanta area, Wesley and Janice were called to pastor the College Park Pentecostal Holiness Church in College Park, MD. They served this church for over 27 years until Wesley was moved to the position of Bishop of the Mid-Atlantic Conference when the former bishop retired. He served 10 years in this position until his retirement in 2013. He continues to be involved with the conference.
Since 1982, Janice has served as Bookkeeper and Secretary to the Bishop of the Mid-Atlantic Conference. During this time she was also employed for 11 years by Litton Industries as Executive Secretary. In 1991 she left her job in order to travel with Wesley on many missions trips to Hungary, Romania, France, Mexico, and the Philippines.
In 1990 Janice and Wesley met a young couple and their baby from France and immediately “adopted” them into their family. After the couple returned to France, they had three more boys and the Russ’s visited back and forth to France over the years. The boys and sometimes their parents also visited for weeks during the summers. The boys are grown now, but Janice and Wesley still maintain their relationship with the boys after all these years. They are our “adopted” grandchildren.
Janice fit a lot into her 80 years and leaves a host of “adopted” children, grandchildren, as well as many cousins. She was a Christian lady who loved the Lord, His church and His people.
Only eternity will reveal the number of people she has helped in her community and around the world through her missions giving. Janice will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Now she has received her hearts desire and has moved into her Father’s House.
