Let us help Lonnie and Betty Sorrels Rex to celebrate their 68th wedding anniversary.
Their wedding ceremony was conducted by Lonnie's father, the Rev. Dr. Robert L. Rex, who was the pastor of the Agnew Pentecostal Holiness Church in Oklahoma City. It happened on April 8, 1949. Lonnie and Betty wanted to have a double-ring ceremony, and that was something unheard of in the West among Pentecostal Churches.
The excitement began to build. Will Brother Rex do a double-ring ceremony? That was something that was not being done in Pentecostal Holiness Churches in the west. The Agnew Church was packed to capacity. Betty, the bride, was almost unable to get into the church to walk down the aisle to get married because of the crowd of people. Lonnie believes more people came to see a double-ring ceremony than because of the wedding ceremony for Betty and him.
As an aside, but so important to remember was that Betty walked down one half of the aisle and stopped as Lonnie sang "Because." You remember I am sure this love song:
Because, you come to me
With naught save love
And hold my hand and lift mine eyes above
A wider world of hope and joy I see
Because you come to me!
Because you speak to me in accent sweet
I find the roses waking 'round my feet
And I am led through tears and joy to thee
Because you speak to me!
Because God…
You would have to known Pastor Robert L. Rex. He was always a risk taker, an innovator, a church leader who thought outside the box, and he could care less what people believed or thought. He believed he should honor his son and daughter-in law to be and do what needed to be done with dignity.
Just as soon as the rings were exchanged and the appropriate words were spoken, shouts of joy and laughter could have heard a half mile away.
Were any of my readers there for that great wedding ceremony? If so, write and tell me your experience.

Many of us remember the Lonnie Rex choirs at General Conferences and the Sunday School Conventions. Some of you were blessed to sing in the 100 voice choir or to play a musical instrument in the Lonnie Rex orchestra. We can let them know how much we appreciate there musical talents. Betty was always at the grand piano playing for the choir and the congregational singing.
Did you know that Lonnie and Betty Rex are gifted and talented pianists? They have often played twin grand piano concerts that have thrilled audiences from coast to coat and have appeared on daily television prorgams.
