In fact, a large shipment of mayonnaise was aboard the ill-fated Titanic, scheduled to unload in Mexico after the ship docked in New York. Of course, you know it never made it to either place. The Mexicans were deeply distraught over the loss of their favorite condiment.
To commemorate its tragic fate, they instituted a national holiday that is still being observed: Sinko de Mayo.
