The worried housewife sprang to the telephone when it rang and listened with relief to the kindly voice in her ear. "How are you, darling?" said the voice. "What kind of a day are you having?"
"Oh, mother," said the housewife, breaking into bitter tears, "I've had such a bad day. The baby won't eat and the washing machine broke down. I haven't had a chance to go shopping, and besides, I've just sprained my ankle and I have to hobble around. On top of that, the house is a mess and I'm supposed to have two couples to dinner tonight."
The mother was shocked and was at once all sympathy. "Oh, darling," she said, "sit down, relax, and close your eyes. I'll be over in half an hour. I'll do your shopping, clean up the house, and cook your dinner for you. I'll feed the baby and I'll get the washing machine repaired promptly. Now stop crying. I'll do everything. In fact, I'll even call Sam at the office and tell him he ought to come home and help out for once."
"Sam?" said the housewife. "Who's Sam?"
"Why, Sam! Your husband!....Is this 223-1374?"
"No, this is 223-1375."
"Oh, I'm sorry. I guess I have the wrong number."
There was a short pause and the housewife said, "Does this mean you're not coming over?"
[Editor's note: Thanks to Glen Carter from Raleigh, NC, for this joke and many others. There are some of my readers who are printing the jokes and pasting them on 3 x 5 cards, and using them with special groups who enjoy good, clean, wholesome jokes. I am working on a message called "The Joy of Laughter." I need all the help I can get to write it from people who read Hugh's News.
I don't laugh enough; but I do enjoy laughing. Whenever I talk with Bob Shafer from Kingfisher, Oklahoma I do a lot of laughing. He brings it out in me. Two outstanding men were born in Kingfisher, OK, of national and worldwide fame: Sam Walton and Bob Shafer. Everybody who lives in Kingfisher, OK, knows Bob Shafer. I would like for you to join me in prevailing, believing prayer of faith for Bob's healing. He recently had back surgery. He is a gifted evangelist who is experiencing signs, wonders, and miracles in his crusades and revival services through the power of the Holy Spirit. The writer of the Book of Hebrews gave testimony to these supernatural miracles performed by the Holy Spirit in Hebrews 2:4,
"God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to His will" (NIV).]
