Florence, SC – The Emmanuel College women's volleyball team hit the road this weekend for their second away tournament of the 2016 season, hosted by Francis Marion University. They were faced by UNC Pembroke, Newberry College, and Anderson University.
The Lady Lions started the tournament playing a very intense five-setter against UNC Pembroke. Both teams put up a tremendous fight; however, the Lady Lions fell 12-15 in the final set. Shortly after this game, the Emmanuel women's volleyball team stepped back on the court to face Newberry College.
The Lady Lions were determined not to let the loss against UNC Pembroke deter them from being victorious on the court against Newberry College. Regardless of the fact that that the Lady Lions had already played a five-setter earlier that day, they showed their determination and potential on the court and pushed Newberry College to a fifth set in which they ended up coming back from a 3-8 deficit, winning 19-17. This marked the first win for the Lady Lions this season. The Lady Lions then faced Anderson University early this morning, and they used the momentum from the previous game against Newberry College to dominate Anderson University in four sets (25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 25-17).
The Lady Lions took to the court again this afternoon to face their final opponent and host university, Francis Marion. The first set started off with the Lady Lions firing away and playing with intensity; however, they ended up losing the set 22-25. The second set also proved to be a bit of a challenge and the score was 16-25. Despite being two sets down, the Lady Lions gave all they had in the third set, and made the Trojans put up a fight. Unfortunately, this was just not enough for the Lady Lions, losing the final set 23-25. Leading the team with the most kills was Sarah Neill with 10, closely followed by Erica Burnham with 8, and Julia de Blanck with 7. The Lady Lions record is now 2-6 for the season after this weekend's tournament.
The Lady Lions fought hard this weekend, and they will be back in action playing Barton University in North Carolina on September 16th at 7:00 p.m.
