Brother Shelton was special to me because he as he became a mentor in 1972. I had finished at Emmanuel College in 1968, preached for one year and returned to Holmes Bible College. I graduated from Holmes in '72 and went to the historic little town of Hillsborough, NC. Brother Shelton pastored at the West Durham church. I would visit Duke hospital quite often, and the Veterans hospital. Sometimes I would stop by his home. He always laid things aside and gave me his full attention. I remember once showing him one of my sermon notes. He looked it over and said, "This is good Brother Beck, but what is important is what you say between the outline notes."
He was always a friend. It pleased him that I became the pastor of his home church in Dry Fork.
