Is God a Policeman?
Author: Greg Morgan
Last night I was driving home late after I picked up supper for our family. I wanted to listen to the radio and flipped to a station that I usually don’t frequent. I was glad I did because I heard a great story.
The segment started out with the following question, “Do you think God is a Policeman?” I thought this was especially interesting since the show was geared to Christians. The speaker went on to say that Christians tend to believe that God is just waiting around to punish us, while others realize that God is full of mercy and grace.
The host then gave an example of both sides of the discussion.
The story he gave goes like this: There was a little girl who was at home with her mother. The daughter said to her mother, “Mommy, mommy, there’s a lion in the front yard!” Of course the mother looked out the front window to see what was going on. The mother then said to the daughter, “That’s not a lion, it’s a Saint Bernard! You knew it was a Saint Bernard too. Now go to your room and ask God to forgive you!
The daughter hung her head and quietly went to her room. Several minutes later the girl came out of her room and now she seemed better. The mother asked, “Well, did you pray to God about this situation?” The girl responded, “Yes.” Then the mother said, “Well, did God say anything? The daughter said, “Yes, ma’am.” The mother said, “So what did He say?” The girl said, “God said He thought it was a lion too!”
The radio host went on to say that children should not lie, but that the daughter knew more about grace than her mother did. Furthermore, God is not a policeman waiting to get us. He is full of grace instead. Thank God for that!
Blessings,
Greg
