When we were young and energetic--it's nice to remember those days when Melvine and I fell in love and were married in Melvine's home church, Draper Pentecostal Holiness Church, located in Eden, NC, on Saturday, August 13, 1960.
Here is how we looked on our wedding day. I was 27 years old, and Melvine was 25. Our birthdays are one day apart. I was born two years before Melvine on December 15, 1932, and she was born on December 16, 1934. How blessed can one be?
To my readers of Hugh's News throughout the United States and around the world Melvine and I want to share our special day with you via this newsletter on our 56th Wedding Anniversary.
The lyrics to "When I Fall in Love," popularized by the late Nat King Cole, express our sentiments of our love and commitment to each other all these years.
You can see and hear Nat King Cole sing this lovely song by Clicking Here on this hyperlink on YouTube. Stay with this website and hear Nat King Cole sing the songs that Melvine and I dearly love. That is the kind of music we grew up singing. What a great time to live during the '40s and '50s when music was wonderful.
When I fall in love it will be forever
Or I'll never fall in love;
In a restless world like this is
Love is ended before it's begun,
And too many moonlight kisses
Seem to cool in the warmth of the sun
When I give my heart it will be completely
Or I'll never give my heart;
And the moment I can feel that you feel that way too
Is when I fall in love with you.
And the moment I can feel that you feel that way too
Is when I fall in love with you.
Melvine and I plan to celebrate our 56th Wedding Anniversary by going out to dinner at a first class restaurant with lots of atmosphere and candlelight.. It will be difficult as we are experiencing the loss of our beautiful and precious daughter, Stephanie Ellen Morgan, who died four years ago on August 3, 2012.
On that same date, August 3, 1956, I completed my three-year commitment as a Marine at Quantico, VA. My best friend, Eddie Dong, a Chinese American, drove me in his Cadillac from our barracks to the Southern Railroad Depot in Quantico, to go home to Birmingham, Alabama, to be reunited to my father and mother, my sister Mary Evelyn Morgan McDuff and her family, my friends, and of course, to my church family, the First Pentecostal Holiness Church when the Rev. O. N. Todd, Jr. was my pastor. O. N. and Lois Todd and their two sons, Olney and Roy Samuel, had visited me at Quantico when I was a member of the Quantico Marine Band. What a blessing that was to have my pastor and his family visit me.

This photo was taken when I was President of Southwestern College in Oklahoma City, now renamed Southwestern Christian University and relocated in Bethany, Oklahoma. In the providence of God I was the third president of this great university of Christian Higher Education, one of the institutions of our International Pentecostal Holiness Church. It was a high honor and privilege to follow the administrations of Dr. R. O. Corvin and his brother, Dr. W. R. Corvin, two outstanding educators.)
Six years ago, Stephanie helped Melvine plan our 50th Wedding Anniversary that was held in the fellowship hall of the Bethlehem United Methodist Church, near Winder, GA. We had to set the date for August 7, 2010, because the fellowship hall had already been reserved. We are saddened that Stephanie is no longer with us. However, we believe she is in heaven with Jesus Christ, her Savior and Lord. We have the blessed hope to see her again and be reunited with her in heaven.
Melvine and Stephanie led the way in leadership in planning our 50th extravaganza celebration. I told Melvine to spare nothing. It is only one time in a lifetime a couple can celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary. So, we gave it all we had to make it special for our family and friends.

Our son, Greg, played an important role in the actual ceremony as he assisted Stephanie with emceeing the event. They sang and Greg played the piano. Being a brother and sister their voices blended beautifully as they would sing in church and for other happy occasions. At home, Greg often plays the piano we gave him as a child and entertains us with great and wonderful arrangements of secular and sacred music. He is a gifted musician with a special touch on the piano. He presently serves as one of the pianist for our local church in Athens--Christian Life Worship Center, as well as the director of World Missions. He served our church, the International Pentecostal Holiness Church, as a tent maker missionary for two years in Budapest, Hungary. He is a linguist and picks up foreign languages relatively easy and he speaks Hungarian, one of the three hardest languages in the world to learn.
We were told that some 150 people gathered on Saturday, August 7, 2010 to honor us with their presence. Although we did not ask for any gifts, only the presence of our friends and family, we were given lovely gifts, cards, money and gift certificates. We are overwhelmed and so grateful for every expression of love from those we love and hold in high esteem.
1960 was a big year for me. I graduated from Furman University in Greenville, SC, with a B. A. degree in Psychology, and a double minor in English literature and Speech and Dramatics. In addition, I completed three years of Bible study with Dr. Paul F. Beacham and the Rev. Mr. Jesse Daniels. I was ordained by the Rev. Dr. Robert L. Rex, at River Springs, AL, and was married and went to seminary. God has blessed me more than anyone else. I am blessed indeed.

We are grateful to Melvine's parents, Russell H. and Frances Shropshire Stewart for giving us a beautiful church wedding, and the friends of the family a lovely reception in the home of William and Myrl Blackwell. They had purchased their beautiful home from their former pastor, George Fisher and his wife, Elsie. They were missionaries for the IPHC, and later joined the staff of Oral Roberts. Elsie Fisher was the tour guide for the Oral Roberts Prayer Tower on the campus of Oral Roberts University.
Elsie Fisher became an adopted mother to our son, Greg, when he was a music major at ORU. She came to his senior recitals when Melvine and I were unable to be present.

Thank you for your love and prayers for us. It is our joy to serve you now for some 19 years by publishing Hugh's News. We are grateful to God for this ministry He has given us. I hope to continue this ministry for at least one more year before I retire again. I will turn 84 on December 15. Eighty-five is a ripe old age to retire and get involved in other things and ministries.
