Miraculous Gift
A Debt-Free Campus!
A Debt-Free Campus!
The Lord has blessed the college with the most significant gift it has ever received. Ms. Grace Ellenberg, who had already given $500,000 toward the construction of the Ellenberg Student Center has left to the college such a substantial fund as to enable us to complete construction of this facility to include our cafeteria and the student activity room.
The gift will also enable us to start construction on the Freeman-Duncan Girls' Dorm. We had some funds given for this project, but the 'gift' will enable us to complete this much-needed space for the girls.
The gift will also enable us to pay off the indebtedness on the Paul F. Beacham Learning Center for which we have been making payments for nine years. Praise the Lord! Hallelujah!
The faculty, staff and students have been praying through the years for this debt to be paid. They have been praying this year for the funds to finish the student center and to start the Freeman-Duncan Dorm.
God has answered prayer. Ms. Grace, who loved Holmes and felt so indebted to it has given a miraculous gift so that Holmes will continue to equip men and women for ministry.
I have a letter in my file from Dr. Beacham in 1973 regarding my giving the address for the opening of school. He wrote, "we have sixty apartments at the college and there is no indebtedness."
Thank you, Ms. Grace. The beautiful new campus is debt-free!
Progress on Ellenberg Student Center and Cafeteria
We expect to be using the lovely Ellenberg Student Center and Cafeteria by the start of the 2017-2018 school year! Funds are now available for its completion and progress is being made daily. (See below for a story about Ms. Ellenberg.)

Ground-breaking for Women's Residence Hall
It was a joyous time during Founder's Memorial Week as we broke ground for the much-needed Freeman-Duncan Women's Residence Hall! Below are pictures of the Board of Trustees and several members of the Freeman-Duncan families who were present and who participated in the ground-breaking ceremony.

We thank God for all He is doing at Holmes. He has put His divine stamp of approval on the progress the school has made, and has assured us that He will continue to bless.

Grace Miriam Ellenberg (May 28, 1921-November 29, 2016)
Ms. Ellenberg is pictured here as she would have looked during her student years at Holmes. She graduated from Holmes in 1938, and always felt that this school meant more to her life than any other college she attended--a list of institutions that included Duke University and the Sorbonne in Paris, France. She often called Holmes her "boot camp."
Listen to her comments on those years: "One thing that Holmes taught me very deeply was to love God's Word. That has stayed with me all these years, and I think I can safely say that I hunger and thirst after a better knowledge of my Bible.
"I had the good fortune, after Holmes, to go on to other schools, some even prestigious, but I put them up against what I learned at a small school, where we had to turn off the lights or we would be called before the president. It was a little school, where I heated my room with the chips from the woodpile where the boys cut wood for the city.
"I wanted to be sure to say that the good education I received at great schools after it, I would not swap at all for those three years I spent at Holmes. Nobody could buy that, because it changed my life.
"I always felt indebted to somehow pay my debt to Holmes. I do not consider that this was a donation; it was partial payment of a big debt."
