Heaven On My Mind
Author: Greg Morgan
Since my sweet sister, Stephanie, passed away in August of 2012, and mother died this past January, I think about heaven much more often than I used to. I suppose that’s only natural.
After getting over the shock of both deaths, I have been reminded that heaven is something to look forward to. Dying is a traumatic experience for family members and friends, even if they are Christians.
I wonder what Stephanie and mother are doing now. I don’t know of course, but I’m sure that it is wonderful.
Our family had the privilege of moving from Birmingham, Alabama to Athens, Georgia in 1986 after dad accepted the call to be the pastor at Tarkenton Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church. At that point in time, Stephanie was a student at Emmanuel College, and I was a student at Oral Roberts University. Therefore, we were not able to help mom and dad move to Athens. I remember a few years prior to that date in 1986, we had gone to Tarkenton for teen talent.
We left a newly constructed church in Hoover, AL, over the mountain from Birmingham that my dad was honored to build. It was a vision God gave him. Dennis Woodard was our minister of music and led us in some great music. It was there in the church in downtown Birmingham I began playing for church services.
It was a thrill for me to be a part of the congregation at Tarkenton. We had 300 plus people on Sundays, and a large choir dawning beautiful red and white robes. Charles Till was the choir director, and he was marvelous. The choir sang a song that I didn’t know at the time entitled "I’m Feeling Fine." I have been reminded of this peppy Gospel song a lot lately and it gives me hope and joy about mom and Stephanie and all the saints who are enjoying life with them in heaven.
Please enjoy the YouTube video that I found of the Gaither Home Coming Singers by Bill and Gloria Gaither singing with many veteran Gospel singers.
Blessings,
Greg
