Wednesday was a day filled with doctors' appointments. We were gone 5 hours from our home. It was a tiring day for Melvine as well as for me. I was exhausted and did not feel like doing a Hugh's News. I did not have the time during the day to read news and devotional materials from the Internet.
We both had an appointment with our family physician, Dr. Alice Edwards. She is a sharp doctor and keeps an eye open for us. I furnish her with a complete list of our prescribed medications, and our daily vital signs.
I normally have friends from our church to help me. Greg had to go back down to Grovetown, GA, to take care of business with his furniture and his apartment. I wasn't sure how I could handle it with Melvine's rollator walker and mine. I prayed to God for help. In the providence of God he had two workman as I got out of the car offer help to me. One of the men took out my rollator walker, and the other man shut my driver's side door. I was able to get Melvine's walker for her, and she was able to lead the way to the doctor's office door. So, I lifted my hands and praised the Lord and thanked Him for favor.
It was not long after we checked in that Kay, the nurse for Dr. Edwards, came to get us in the waiting room.
Melvine got on the digital scales first. She had gained a couple of pounds. I had gained much more. I've got to put a bridle to my appetite. I need God's help to get this excessive weight off, and reduce my belly. I am not pleased at all with my appearance.
Kay took our vital signs and took at look at our medications.
The first thing Dr. Edwards said to me was "Hugh, you look the best you've looked in months. Your color is good. You appear to be relaxed and and peaceful. Did you get a good night of sleep?" Nobody has ever told me this, and certainly not a doctor. I was amazed. I felt I was in the greatest stress of my life. There were things that were happening in my life and all around me beyond my control. I was suffering internally, and I was driven to seek God and place my full trust in God alone. Dr. Edwards offered to prescribe something for my stress. She knows that I dearly love Melvine, and that I am going through a lot of stress. I told her that I appreciate the offer, but I am trusting in God to bring me through. I really don't want to take any more medicine, if I can avoid it.
Before we left home to drive to Watkinsville to see Dr. Edwards, Bishop Talmadge Gardner, the executive director of World Missions Ministries sent me an email with a powerful Word from Jesus recorded in John 14:27:
Dr. Morgan:
Praying this passage of Scripture over you and Melvine...
‘Peace I leave with you; My peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.’

Hello Hugh!

Romans 15:13 Amen
Thankful,

Melvine is doing well with her blood sugar. I am giving her a low dosage or units of insulin. I gave her 3 units Thursday evening. She is so pleased with Melvine's progress.
Today, June 27, I gave myself my 50th injection of insulin, 30 units.
We are to see Dr. Edwards in one month.
After we left her office we had some time before we were scheduled to see Dr. Samuel Bellnap, the newest urologist on the team where I go. The Botox surgery Dr. Gary Walton did on my bladder a few months ago has not worked. I will be seeing him on Monday morning. I am hoping he can help me. I need your prayers.
We decided to go to the Waffle House and get something to eat. We like the WH near Home Depot. As Melvine got out of our car, her jeans were loose because of loss of weight, and they started to fall to her knees. Fortunately, she grabbed them and pulled them up. That was a scary moment. We found our usual place we like to eat, a table for two. I asked the lady and her daughter in the booth next to us if they had a safety pin. They responded by saying, No. They were a mother, daughter and her two children, a girl about 8, and a little boy about 2. I sensed that the boy had some handicap. He was sitting in a special apparatus in his chair. He smiled at me, and I returned the smile. Really, I can only grin. I told him, "Jesus loves you, and so do I. God has a great plan for your life." The ladies said, "Amen."'
When I asked our waitress for the bill, I call it the final verdict, she told me that the people next to us who had just left paid for our meal. I said, "Praise the Lord. That is God's favor." I thanked the waitress who is a college student and gave her a 5 dollar bill for her service. I told her her service was outstanding.
I figured in my mind that we could drive home, get a safety pin (I have a bottle of them of all sizes) to help Melvine pin up her jeans. I forgot to print a list of Melvine's medications for Dr. Bellnap. We were only 5 minutes late. I was asked to complete a computer generated data base on Melvine. That is my job assignment. The first thing didn't work and they gave me another one that did. Melvine was asked to do a urine specimen and was able to void. We had to wait a long time after we got in the exam room. I saw that Melvine was extremely tired and having to wait was not helping matters for her or me. I am a very proactive person. So, I opened the door to go looking for the tech who took Melvine's blood pressure and asked her several questions. Low and behold, I saw my urologist, Dr. Gary Walton. I told him about Melvine and he remembered she has ovarian cancer. I told him that we had been waiting about 30 minutes and that was unacceptable. He said they were having to see a lot of patients and were running behind. The tech came up and I talked with her. I went back in the exam room.
Shortly, Dr. Samuel Bellnap came. He is so personable and resourceful. He is on top of everything. He had done a thorough job in reviewing Melvine's referral documents from Dr. Jane Huang, oncologist. We have been concerned about a spot on Melvine's left kidney. Doctors who have seen it wondered what it is, and some called it a sist. He called it by name, a certain slow growing cancer. He said it never grows more than 2 to 3 percent a year. He said I would not worry about it. It is not worth it to take a biopsy to check it out. We will just keep an eye on it.
I told him we needed his help. Melvine has had a couple of UTI's (urinary tract infection). The only way we can get a true urine test is by a urine specimen done with a catheter. None of the doctor's offices do it. So,we have had to go to St. Mary's Hospital Emergency Clinic. The last time we were there it took four hours. That is unacceptable and it exposes Melvine, as well as myself to all sorts of diseases that people in the waiting room may have. Can you help us? He said we can do it here in our office in record time whenever you feel the symptoms reveal a possible UTI. That was an answer to our prayers. Once again, God's favor.
Then, I asked, "What can we do to help prevent UTI's in addition getting Melvine to drink fluids?"
He responded immediately.
He said, Melvine should take Cranberry Extract, a capsule once a day. And she should take a probiotic capsule once a day.
My maternal grandmother was a noted midwife and considered a doctor in her day (she lived to be 95) because she knew all the remedies for most everything. She told us to drink Cranberry juice when we had problems peeing. I know that works. As a child and youth I never went to a doctor. My parents treated us with remedies my grandmother knew. One of the things that they did was to give us caster oil. That, in my opinion was a sin against children. It was just awful, and I am not sure it helped us at all. Whatever happened through common childhood diseases, we survived. We did get vaccinations. I think the health department gave them to us. My good friend Lonnie Rex got polio when he was about 12. I had a cousin, Lewis, who had polio, and a friend, Jimmy Cato, who had polio.
What amazes me is that the doctors have not been able to answer my question about ways to help prevent UTI's. The question is for me "Why don't they know?" And if they know, why don't they tell you?
Since I found out about probiotic, several people I know tell me they take it daily. I had never heard of it. If I did, it never registered in my brain. Now, it has caught my attention.
I called my pharmacist and talked with her about probiotics. She told me there were all the same thing, some more expensive. She recommended one that costs with tax, $16 a bottle for 30 days. So, I drove to Farmer's Prescription Shop in Winder and got it Thursday afternoon. They are a top notch pharmacy and I like them for they are family owned and the people who work there are really intelligent, kind, and helpful.
Today, Melvine got a good workout from her physical therapist who came to our home. The nurse comes on Friday.
Greg came home today for good. He was able to get his rented furniture removed from his apartment on Wednesday evening, and on Thursday, his apartment passed the inspection and he turned in his keys. The landlady complimented Greg for being a good tenet. He brought the remainder of his household goods home in his car. He will have to get some new tires for his car. He has made many long trips this past school year where he taught music education in a middle school near Augusta, GA. He takes excellent care of his vehicle.
Greg went to Cracker Barrel to get our supper. He is a great help to us. We are glad to have him home. Tonight, he played some fantastic arrangements of great hymns and Gospel songs on the piano.
That's the news for today.
