After OKC Southwestern (Southwestern College) closed on 10th Street in 1981, we moved to Alpine, TX where Jerry was coaching baseball and basketball at Sul Ross State University. One day I answered the phone, and Dr. Jernigan formally told me who was calling and said he would like to talk to Jerry Boone. I told him who I was and that I had married Jerry and was a teacher, too.
Dr. Jernigan was the Academic Dean at the new Jimmy Swaggart Bible College and was looking for Pentecostal teachers and coaches who had advanced degrees. We flew to Baton Rouge, and Jerry was hired to be the athletic director and oversee the building of a fitness center with 2 or 3 basketball courts, volleyball court, male and female exercise rooms, an indoor track, an Olympic size pool, various other rooms. After two years of overseeing the building and recruiting, Jerry coached the first men's basketball team at Jimmy Swaggart Bible College. I was interviewed and was hired to teach 2nd grade at Family Christian Academy which was also part of the Jimmy Swaggart Ministries. Marilyn taught there, too, and taught our daughter, Kristen, in fifth grade. We have stayed in touch and have seen the Jernigans a couple of times since leaving Baton Rouge. Both of the Jernigans have influenced many lives for Christ including my family and me.
Glenda is a supporter of Hugh's News and her tribute to Dr. Douglas Jernigan and his wife, Marilyn, is one that the Jernigan family will treasure and hold closer to their hearts. Glenda hods the Ed. D, degree and is a professor of Education at North Greenville University.
