Five Flagpoles erected at Shaw Athletic Center
Stephanie Ellen Morgan is remembered by her family -- November 18, 1966 - August 3, 2012.
Waiting is a common experience for everyone. Sometimes there are delays. I convinced that God has a purpose for delays. It is a process of maturity and trust in God.
Melvine, Greg, and I chose to purchase one of the five telephone poles and flags outside the Jack - Jane Shaw Athletic Center—"to exalt Jesus Christ" a few years ago. Because of the unexpected financial crisis the flagpoles were not installed as planned. However, the leadership of Emmanuel College has persevered and now the flagpoles have been installed.
In talking with Brian James, Vice President for Development, he told us that it cost $8,000 to have the flagpoles installed. They had to dig deep to make them stable. May I encourage any person or persons who would like to give to Emmanuel College to help repay this extra cost.
Melvine was given the privilege of selecting which flagpole she wanted to honor our Stephanie. She chose the flagpole with the blue flag, Emmanuel College flag. Stephanie dearly loved Emmanuel. It was Wesley and Janice Robinson Russ who purchased a coach's office, and Melvine, Greg, and I have purchased three other coaches' offices in loving memory of Stephanie Ellen Morgan. These basketball coaches offices are located upstairs in the Athletic Center.
Five flagpoles have been erected near the Jack and Jane Shaw Athletic Center—"to exalt Jesus Christ." The fourth flagpole is dedicated in loving memory of Stephanie Ellen Morgan by her family. It is the Emmanuel College flag.
Melvine, Greg, and I have made reservations for the Alumni luncheon this coming Saturday, 19 October at 11:30 a. m. This year's Centennial Celebration is the highlight of this year. None of us will be around for the next centennial. We hope to see you there. We are grateful for our many friends who are alumni or alumnus of Emmanuel College. I attended Emmanuel College for only one year, 1952-53. I had been selected for the military draft and I did not want to be drafted into the Army. So, I went down to the Marine Recruiters' office in Birmingham, Alabama (my hometown) and enlisted for three years in the United States Marine Corps.
Little did I know that when I got to Parris Island, SC, for my basic or boot training, I would be selected to play trombone in the Quantico Marine Band after passing an audition. Dwight D. Eisenhower was the president. He and my father were both born in Denison, TX. My dad was born December 12, 1884, and six years later Dwight D. Eisenhower was born there. The Eisenhowers and the Morgans were ranchers. The Eisenhowers decided to move back to Kansas, and the Morgans moved to Oklahoma.
Our Marine Corps Band at Quantico, Virginia, often played for events when President Dwight D. Eisenhower came to Quantico for a graduation of newly commissioned Marine Officers following graduation from the OTC. In addition, we played when Richard Nixon, Vice President, came for similar events.
It was at Quantico that God called me to be a military chaplain. I never realized I would become an Air Force chaplain. However, prior to my commission as an officer in the Air Force, I was a Chaplain Candidate in the Army Chaplain Corps, and later promoted to First Lieutenant when I graduated from Asbury Theological Seminary in 1963.
I am honored to have served my country as a Marine, an Army chaplain, and an Air Force chaplain with a total number of years of 29 years and 29 days of service to the United States of America.
Then, God allowed me to serve for almost 16 years as the director/endorser of Chaplains Ministries, IPHC.
It is noteworthy that I completed my three-year enlistment on August 3, 1956 and departed from Quantico, Virginia by train for my home in Birmingham, AL, and our Stephanie died on August 3, 2012 and departed this life for eternal life in heaven.
