FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA -- Athletic Director Nate Moorman announced the addition of College Bass Fishing as a competitive sport beginning in Fall 2019. This news comes after a very successful response to an inquiry campaign launched earlier this month.
Currently there are around 600 College bass fishing teams in the United States, the majority of them being club teams. Emmanuel will be one of the select few programs in the country offering athletic scholarships to students interested in competitive fishing while continuing their education.
As with other teams on campus, Emmanuel seeks for the College Bass Fishing team to be a highly competitive program. Therefore, the program will be sufficiently funded and compete in top nationally recognized tournaments, such as the FLW Outdoors College Series, Carhartt Bassmaster College Bass Fishing Series and possibly others.
"Emmanuel College is the perfect institution to sponsor a scholarship College Bass Fishing team." says Athletic Director Nate Moorman. "The proximity to a world class fishing lake, the draw towards our Diversified Agriculture major, and the success the athletic department has already seen in pioneering new scholarship sports makes it an easy decision."
Emmanuel is located thirty minutes from Lake Hartwell which will serve as the teams primary fishing venue. Lake Hartwell is a man-made reservoir bordering Georgia and South Carolina, and is one of the largest and most popular recreation lakes in the southeast. It has been home to the Geico Bassmaster Classic three times, most recently in 2018.
