BETHANY, OK — Southwestern Christian University honored one of its own Friday when the University named the North Dorm conference center the Jim Poteet Conference Center at the request of an SWCU donor.
The naming is in honor of SWCU administrator, coach and professor Dr. Jim Poteet at the request of Daryl Nicholson. Last year the Daryl and Vickie Nicholson Trust gave the largest donation in SWCU history in the form of the Western Oaks Landmark Tower.
“I am so glad this family has seen the need to honor Jim’s contributions to Christian higher education and the city of Bethany,” SWCU President Dr. Reggies Wenyika said. “It is an example of the uniqueness of Southwestern Christian University that of all the universities Dr. Poteet has been a part of, this is where his legacy will be recognized and enshrined.”
Poteet came to SWCU in 2009 and has served as Chair and Professor of Health, Physical Education and Sports Management, Associate Athletic Director and Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach during that time. Poteet helped guide the SWCU Athletic Department from the application process to membership in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in 2010. He was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 2014.
“It is an honor I never expected,” Poteet said. “I am grateful to Southwestern Christian University for giving me an opportunity to serve, help take the athletic program to the NAIA level and work with many great students in the class room.”
