Carl O. Sturkie Maintenance Facility
Carl Sturkie came from a long line of builders. He never considered doing anything but building and dropped out of high school to go to work. He worked for a few years, completed a 3-year hitch in the army and went back to building. He started his own business and was very successful.
God had other plans for Carl – He reminded him that He had called him to preach at the age of 12 years old. So, in 1971 at the age of 30, he moved his family to Greenville to attend Holmes Bible College. Carl graduated in 1975 and continued to live at Holmes to do building and maintenance. During those years he made three trips to Mexico and did building.
In 1977, the call of God came loud and clear that now was the time to apply for full-time missionary status. He was accepted, and in June 1979, he and his family left to serve in Zambia, Central Africa. While there he built four churches and remodeled the mission house in Lusaka.
Carl served in several other places in Africa. He built the Eldoret Training Center in Kenya. In 1990-91 he built a church and mission house in Lilongwe, Malawi. The last thirteen years of his missionary career were spent in South Africa and Botswana. He built six churches in Botswana, the World Harvest Bible College in Johannesburg, South Africa, a two-story, 6,000 square feet training center in Krugersdorp, thirteen churches and did renovation to existing buildings.
In 2007, he felt it was time to leave Africa and retire. God had other plans. Carl was asked to go back to Holmes and supervise the building of a duplex apartment, men’s dormitory, Holmes Memorial Church, women’s dorm, and his own building, the Carl O. Sturkie Maintenance Facility. Carl also totally remodeled the President’s Home next to the campus. Of the eight buildings connected to the campus, Carl built six.
Well done, Carl!
