Neurologist explains the health benefits of eggs
You probably can remember a time when health experts were decrying the evils of eggs. For a period of time, doctors were warning people that eggs contained dangerous levels of cholesterol, which could lead to heart disease.
Neuologist David Perlmutter argues against this belief, however, and says, "The erroneous but strong messages about egg restriction that emanated primarily from the United States in the 1970s have unfortunately stuck around far too long."
Instead, Dr. Perlmutter explains that numerous studies have shown that eggs are actually a source of good cholesterol that our brains needs: "Whole eggs contain all the essential amino acids we need to survive, vitamins and minerals, plus anti-oxidants known to protect our eyes. Moreover, they contain ample supplies of choline, which is particularly important to aiding healthy brain function as well as pregnancy."
He goes on to explain that "the real culprits" when it comes to health issues are not foods rich in cholesterol, but "foods that are high on the glycemic index--basically high in carbohydrates." But even with eggs no longer considered dangerous, the best eggs are the ones are still those thast are organic, non-GMO, and preferably pasture-raised.
