Lighten Up With Laughter

Grandpa was telling his young grandson what life was like when he was a boy.

"In the winter we’d ice skate on our pond. In the summer we could swim in the pond, and pick berries in the woods. We’d swing on an old tire my dad hung from a tree on a rope. And we had a pony we rode all over the farm."

The little boy was amazed, and sat silently for a minute.

Finally he said, "Granddad, I wish I'd gotten to know you a lot sooner!"

May I share with you an appropriate Hymn for what you will read today--"Great is Thy Faithfulness"

To listen to this great hymn of faith I have made you a hyperlink to hear a large congregation in an Anglican church (it appears), please Click Here. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could get our church congregations to sing like this?

"Great is Thy Faithfulness"
Thomas Chisholm – 1925

1  “Great is Thy faithfulness,” O God my Father,
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not
As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.

“Great is Thy faithfulness!” “Great is Thy faithfulness!”
 Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided--
“Great is Thy faithfulness,” Lord, unto me!

2  Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above,
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

3  Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Presiding Bishop Doug Beacham and Bishop Thomas McGhee make an urgent appeal to give to Southwestern Christian University

PicturePresiding Bishop Doug Beacham, General Superintendent of the IPHC
It is imperative that I share with you this video which our Presiding Bishop Doug Beacham and Bishop Thomas McGhee have made and sent to our church leaders, pastors, and church members.

Every pastor in the IPHC is encouraged to take an offering in his church for Southwestern Christian University. Every church member is asked to prayerfully consider what God would have you give to meet this financial need at Southwestern Christian University.

Bishop Doug Beacham shares in this video the fact that some 30 students received Jesus Christ as their personal Savior in the first chapel service of this fall semester.  No other investment is more valuable than the one or ones we make in youth for their Christian education. Let us agree to believe God will provide the finances through people like you and me to meet this financial need. You'll be glad you took advantage of this opportunity to help our university in Bethany, Oklahoma meet this challenge with success.

As the former third president of this 70-year-old institution of Christian higher education, Southwestern Christian University Melvine and I desire to be a part in the giving to meet this pressing financial need. In fact, we have talked together and prayed about what God would have us give. We have agreed on a figure that we believe is God's Will for us to contribute. We are sending our love gift directly to the university.

I know something of the burden and responsibility every college or university president has to provide for the financial stability and well-being of the college for the students, faculty and staff. I have sat where the current president, Dr. Reggies Wenyika, sits, and I have an affinity for what he must be experiencing. We can stand together like Aaron and Hur who lifted up the arms and hands of Moses in a great military battle. Let us once again read the Scripture passage that records this famous story of a military victory that was under-girded by prevailing prayer.

Exodus 17:12-13
When Moses' hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up — one on one side, one on the other — so that his hands remained steady till sunset. 13 So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword (NIV).

Our God is a Big God and has unlimited resources. He uses people like you and me to give of the resources He has given to us to bless institutions like Southwestern Christian University.

I am grateful for the leadership of Bishops Doug Beacham and Thomas McGhee for taking the initiative to make us aware of this urgent need, and did so with clarity, honesty and sincerity.

Melvine and I will be sending our love gift to Southwestern Christian University.

We ask you to do the same by asking God what He would have you give in a special offering for Southwestern Christian University in their time of financial need. The first thing we all must do is to offer prayers for this our church owned university in Bethany, Oklahoma.

Here is how you can give by check:

Dr. Hugh H. Morgan, the third President of Southwestern Christian University, shares his heart-felt love for this Christ-Centered university in Bethany, Oklahoma

Dr. Hugh H. Morgan, the third president of Southwestern Christian University

It is a personal joy to announce to you what God is doing at Southwestern Christian University.

For over 70 years Southwestern College, now Southwestern Christian University, has been a beacon of light for Christian higher education that is Christ-centered not only for IPHC youth in the west, but for youth from coast to coast, and north to south, regardless of their religious background.

God gave a vision for Southwestern College to two men: Dr. R. O. Corvin and Oral Roberts. It is an amazing history. Our people responded then as well as over the intervening years to help support this great Christian college with Pentecostal Holiness and evangelical teaching that is Christ-centered as well as conservative in a world of liberalism.

It was Oral Roberts and Lee Braxton who gave the money for the first administration building on the first campus. My offices were in that facility.

Overshadowing the founding of this university has been the greatest work and ministry of the graduates who have joined the host of youth who have answered the prayer that Jesus taught His disciples to pray that God would send laborers into the harvest field for the harvest is ripe. There is no greater mission.

We live in a world with mind-boggling changes. The cultural, technological and political landcape is dramatically changing. However, in times like these, we must pause to remember there are some things that never change. People are still sinners. The world is still lost without Jesus Christ and need Him as their Savior and Lord. The Gospel is still the answer. That is the good news the world needs to hear.

That is why Southwestern Christian University must stand firm and rise to the challenge of changing times and re-present the Gospel in fresh and compelling ways.
Every Christian college or university goes through financial crises. Southwestern is in the mist of one now, and we need to come to their rescue to give as God has given so graciously to us.

I will share with you once again the video that Presiding Bishop Doug Beacham, General Superintendent of the IPHC, and Bishop Tommy McGhee, Vice Chairman and Executive Director of Discipleship Ministries have produced. Let us respond to our leaders who have shared the financial need of Southwestern and give accordingly as God has blessed us.

In addition, I want to share with you a video that President Reggies Wenyika, Dr. Jon Chasteen and Dr. Adrian Hinkle have made to assist us in our response to give to help Southwestern Christian University. Look for it in the article just below this one.

Here is a hyperlink to this video produced by President Reggies Wenyika. Please Click Here to view it.

Important Video Message from Dr. Reggies Wenyika, President of Southwestern Christian University in Bethany, Oklahoma

PictureDr. Reggies Wenyika, President of Southwestern Christian University
Dear Students and Friends of SCU,

This morning I was joined by two alumni of Southwestern Christian University, Dr. Jon Chasteen and Dr. Adrian Hinkle. Dr. Jon Chasteen serves on the board of SCU and is the Lead Pastor of Victory Church in Oklahoma City and Edmond. Dr. Adrian Hinkle, a scholar and consummate academician, serves as SCU's Vice President for Academic Affairs and has been associated with the University since 1999.

As alumni and leaders, we felt the need to encourage and reiterate our commitment to the vision and mission of SCU. As with any life's endeavor, challenges and hardships must be overcome, and at SCU we are resolute and continue to forge ahead with offering rigorous academics pursued from a Christian worldview and a vibrant spiritual atmosphere and campus climate designed to prepare students for a life of national and global impact. Like numerous private colleges in the US, we do not receive federal or state budget appropriations to assist with our operational costs.  We rely on the financial support of friends, various churches and entities, and our sponsoring denomination, the International Pentecostal Holiness Church. For this we are thankful.

We are in the middle of a fundraising campaign, negotiations and exploring the best way to leverage our resources in a manner that enables us to enhance our ability to fulfill our mission and vision.  For example, we have placed the Western Oaks Tower, a building located on 23rd street, on the market.  This is the tallest building in Bethany which was donated to University in 2015. This is not uncommon for institutions like us. God has been good to SCU and I appreciate your prayers and support.  Please watch the video message, and continue supporting the ongoing mission of SCU.

Joyful in His service,

Reggies Wenyika, Ed.D.
President

 On with the Mission

"For over 70 years, Southwestern has been a strong influence for Good."

These were the words of a friend, supporter, and former SCU president, Dr. Hugh Morgan, as he was praying for me and the university this morning. At SCU we are guided by our collective ethos of Scholarship, Spirit and Service and we continue to be the university of choice for those seeking a Christ-centered education that equips for a life of learning, leadership and service, and that empowers individuals to make a positive impact in the world.

SCU's faculty are known for their nurturing, compassionate and mission-minded approach to teaching, modeling and mentoring.  Through their efforts, SCU's influence and reach continues to increase every year and has reached over 30 countries in the past three years. Frequently I hear about our graduates' involvement in start-up companies, church plants, acts of selfless service, and other leadership roles here and abroad, and I marvel at how the words of Dr. Morgan ring true. We are a strong influence for Good and we forge ahead with our mission.

God has given Janice Russ Six Good Days Consecutively--To God be the Glory

9/30/2017

Picture
Several of you, my Hugh's News readers, have asked about Janice--"How is she doing?"

It is my privilege and honor to contact Wesley Russ almost daily to get an update report on her.

I talked with Wesley Saturday afternoon. He gave a most encouraging report about Janice. He said that the last six days have been good ones. God is using the medication to effectively remove the continued coughing. She is about freed from that exhausting physical issue.

Saturday was a good day for Janice. We praise the Lord and give Him all the glory, honor, and adoration.

Janice, as you may remember, is on Hospice. A nurse comes to their home in Beltsville, Maryland twice a week. Janice is not able to swallow and has been on a feeding tube for a year and a half. Wesley feeds her a special formula that the doctor has prescribed.

Let us continue to make our voices heard in heaven on behalf of Janice Robinson Russ. Please join me in asking God for a creative miracle for Janice. Jesus said this to His disciples:

John 15:16-17

16 You have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that you should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever you shall ask of the Father in my Name, He may give it you.

17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.
KJV

You and I can express our love for Janice by praying for her healing. Jesus still heals today. He is the same today as He always has been. We are instructed by our Lord to ask whatsoever we will, and that means all inclusive requests. I believe God can heal Janice for His glory and her good. What a testimony it will be. Most importantly, we want to see Janice healed completely and be able to enjoy her life to the fullest and be able to eat real food once again.

As we pray for Janice, let us pray equally for Wesley for new strength and vitality, hope, faith, and love. Wesley has problems with his back from time to time. He was really hurting which I talked with him on Saturday. I prayed immediately for him and Janice. Let's pray that God will help Wesley to continue his excellent care of Janice in her sickness. He does all the laundry, cleans the house, etc. He knows how to do many things. He has never been lazy.

Why not write Janice and Wesley Russ. A get well card, and even some green backs with "In God we Trust" engraved on them will be greatly appreciated I am sure. I have not talked with them about that, but giving to our brother and sister is a good way to demonstrate that we are connected with them in this trial of their faith.

Wesley and Janice Russ
4100 Kenny Street
Beltsville, MD 20705-2732

I know a get-well card or a letter will be a great encouragement to them.

May God grant full healing and glowng health for both Janice and Wesley Russ.

Thanks for your prayers for our choice friends.

Is It God’s Will That All Should Be Healed?--by Pastor John Greiner, Glorious Way Church

9/30/2017

PictureJohn & John and Gladys Greiner, Pastor of Glorious Way Church, Houston, TX
Does God want every sick person to receive His healing power? The answer is a resounding YES! The problem most of us have is the immediate follow-up question: then why are we still sick? For a glimpse into the solution, let’s look at Jesus. Jesus is God in the form of a man, so we can see God’s true eagerness concerning healing by the accounts of the apostles.

Acts 10:38 says that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed of the devil, for God was with Him. Jesus was an equal opportunity healer and deliverer. At one point in Jesus’ ministry, Matthew reports:
"And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people" (Matt 9:35).

But notice what happens just 4 chapters later in Nazareth where they rejected Jesus’s teachings:

"Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief" (Matt 13:58).

So we see that Jesus is eager to heal, full of compassion, but that unbelief stops up the power of God. Faith, on the other hand, activates it. The Faith Principle is one that should be familiar to all of us. We had to have faith to become Christians in the first place. Do you believe that it’s God’s will that all should be SAVED? John 3:16 says that God sent Jesus to the whole world that WHOEVER believes in Him would have everlasting life. 2 Peter 3:9 says, "it’s not God’s will that ANY should perish, but that ALL should come to repentance." Yet, as we know too well, many reject the Gospel and fail to walk in God’s plan for their redemption.

So it’s the same with healing! Our faith plays a role. We believe–-then we receive. The same steps that led to our salvation are universal in accessing God’s power for all other blessings he has promised … like healing. The Law of Faith works when we:

1. Hear the good news.
Jesus knew teaching was the anecdote to unbelief. Romans 10:17 says faith comes by hearing and hearing the Word. That’s why in every region, he preached, taught and then healed. His healings were a demonstration of the power of His Word, and they still are today. We all come to church to be taught so that we can overcome old doubts and stomp out new ones. The Word erases doubt and paves the way to activate God’s power in our lives.

2. Believe it.
Based on what we heard, we opened our hearts to trust Him and were changed from the inside out. Of the 19 individual healing miracles of Jesus recorded for us in the Gospels, 12 of them mention faith. The person who received healing demonstrated his/her total confidence in Jesus’ ability and willingness to heal them.

3. Confess it.
Romans 10:10 says that with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Confessing our beliefs simply means saying them out loud. We said, Jesus is my Lord, and it released His saving power. This principle works for all God’s promises, including divine healing. In Mark 11:23 Jesus says, “For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.” But we have to say something, out loud, over and over until faith in that Word grows. With patience, the Word of God will push that mountain of sickness into the sea.
4. Act on it.
James 2:20 says that faith without works is dead. When we became Christians, we let God change our behavior. Our desire for sin shrank, and our desire for godly living grew. This can be a continual process, and it’s the same for divine health and healing. Are you currently working steps 1-3 but are still battling symptoms of sickness or disease? Don’t quit! Every day, do something to act your faith. Act like you’re healed. Act like those healing Scriptures that you are saying all the time are true. Do more than you did yesterday. Those Scriptures can’t help but grow and bear fruit in your life. Fruit takes time to grow. By faith and patience, you will inherit God’s promise for healing–-if you don’t give up.

So just like it’s God’s desire to save everyone, it’s God’s desire to heal everyone. The mission of this church and every believer is to fulfill God’s will on the earth by becoming more and more like Jesus. To speak His Word. To do His works– and greater ones, as He commanded. Why not start by releasing healing in your own life or for those around you? God’s power is available for whoever will receive.

[Editor's Comment: John Greiner is the founding pastor of Glorious Way Church in Houston, TX. Lonnie Rex introduced me to John. John was trained by the late John Osteen, the father of Joel Osteen, pastor of Lakewood Church in Houston, TX. As I recall, John served John Osteen for some 18 years. John was in the building business prior to becoming a minister of the Gospel. He is a man who reads and studies the Bible and spends as lot of time in prayer. He became friends with Oral Roberts and Oral selected several young men to mentor and speak into their lives and ministries. John has written a book about Oral Roberts Seed-Faith teaching. John Osteen placed his blessing upon John Greiner to begin his church. He and his wife, Gladys, have been faithful in their ministry to the Glorious Way Church.]

October 8th is Pastor Appreciation Day—a time for congregations within the IPHC to formally recognize the work of their spiritual leaders.

2017’s Pastor Appreciation theme is based on First Corinthians 9:19, “I have made myself a servant to all that I might win the more” (ESV).

Pastor Appreciation Day is a joint venture between Women’s and Men’s Ministries.

Please make a special effort to honor your pastors on October 8, 2017.

“Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those
who labor in the word and doctrine (1 Timothy 5:17 NKJV).”

You can make yours the most special day ever for your pastoral family.

Psalm 121  Our help comes from the Lord

I will lift up my eyes to the hills —
From whence comes my help?
2 My help comes from the LORD,
Who made heaven and earth.

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved;
He who keeps you will not slumber.
4 Behold, He who keeps Israel
Shall neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The LORD is your keeper;
The LORD is your shade at your right hand.
6 The sun shall not strike you by day,
Nor the moon by night.

7 The LORD shall preserve you from all evil;
He shall preserve your soul.
8 The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in
From this time forth, and even forevermore.

Becky prepared a pasta dish for a dinner party she was giving. In her haste, however, she forgot to refrigerate the spaghetti sauce, and it sat on the counter all day. She was worried about spoilage, but it was too late to cook up another batch.

She called the local Poison Control Center and voiced her concern. They advised Becky to boil the sauce again.

That night, the phone rang during dinner, and one of the guests volunteered to answer it. Becky’s face dropped as the guest called out, “It’s the Poison Control Center. They want to know how the spaghetti sauce turned out.”

Friday was a good day for Janice.

Most importantly, we want to see Janice healed completely and be able to enjoy her life the fullest and be able to eat real food once again.

As we pray for Janice, let us pray equally for Wesley for new strength and vitality, hope, faith, and love. Wesley has problems with his back from time to time. He was really hurting which I talked with him on Friday.

I know a get-well card or a letter will be a great encouragement to them.

May God grant full healing and glowng health for both Janice and Wesley Russ.

Thanks for your prayers for our choice friends.

Dr. Hugh H. Morgan, the third President of Southwestern Christian University, shares his heart-felt love for this Christ-Centered university in Bethany, Oklahoma
