As Emmanuel College celebrates 97 years in 2016, more than 100 alumni and friends attending Saturday's Annual Alumni & Friends Luncheon on October 8th shared in fellowship and recognized winners of the President’s Award, Distinguished Alumnus of the Year, and the Medallion Award.
Many celebrating class reunions were also recognized and alumni from the Class of 1966 were inducted as Golden Graduates of Emmanuel.

Bett Smith & Dr. Ron White Bett Smith graduated from Emmanuel College in 1961. While attending Emmanuel, she met her late husband, Sherman Smith (1960) and together they had three children, Roson, Sebring, and Shaunda and have six grandchildren.
We honor Bett for her years of service to Emmanuel by initiating, leading and motivating many alumni and friends to get involved and assist in the growth of Emmanuel College. Personally, she has led various projects including the Entrance Sign project, various landscape and beautification projects. She has been involved in several athletic projects including the VIP Suite, Ganey Room, Bona Room and Bill White Media Suite in the Shaw Athletic Center just to name a few. She has been instrumental in various fundraising endeavors, personal giving and the new renovation projects at the baseball field including a new scoreboard, bleachers, and press box.
"What can you say about someone who gives not just money but extraordinary time and energy in support of her Alma Mater?" said Dr. Ron White, President of Emmanuel College. "Bett is a mover and shaker that gets things done. Her love for the College is evident in the many ways she helps Emmanuel. Not only is she generous with her financial resources, she has been instrumental in getting many others to give as well. We are so grateful."
As a retired educator, she is motivated to educate young people. Bett is constantly sharing the Emmanuel story with friends and peers, looking for opportunities to invite perspective students to consider Emmanuel College for their college experience. She has motivated hundreds of alumni to engage over the past decade and her efforts are bearing fruit all around us today.

Phillip Bowen & Dr. Ron White Mr. Phillip Bowen (’98)
A 1998 graduate of Emmanuel, Phillip currently resides in Buckhead, Ga. While attending Emmanuel he met his wife, Mary Ann (1998) and together they have a son, Parke.
Phillip is honored for his years of service to Emmanuel through initiating various opportunities and opening doors for Emmanuel to be presented to new relationships. As the CEO of In Touch Ministries in Atlanta, GA, he is constantly looking for ways to introduce Emmanuel College to a variety of new arenas and considers multiple ways to improve the campus through financial and gift in-kind provisions.
His job duties at In Touch carry him all across the globe and give him opportunities to advance the Gospel and share leadership decisions that affect millions of people. His efforts this year to assist the college have made a tremendous impact on students and alumni alike.
"Phillip is one of our most influential alums, serving millions through the outreach of In Touch Ministries, yet he takes time out of his busy schedule to support his alma mater," said Dr. White. "Last May he was our Commencement Speaker and gave a message that our graduates will use to propel themselves to great success. Phillip and his wife, Mary-Ann, are two of my favorite people because of their positive attitudes, their unlimited energy, and their ability to get things done. We are blessed to count them as alumni of Emmanuel College."
Phillip honored the 2016 graduating class this May as our commencement speaker and brought a life changing personal challenge to the entire assembly with the message, right people, right place, right opportunity…follow God.
Additionally, his story made the feature cover of the new alumni magazine, FORWARD. He has been instrumental in various fundraising endeavors by giving personally and challenging others.

Rick Haug & Dr. Ron White 2016 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year
Pastor Rick Haug (’76)
Currently serves as the pastor of Living Word Church in Maiden, NC. Pastor Haug has been instrumental in helping create a pipeline from Living Word Church to Emmanuel College, sending seven first year students to Emmanuel this year alone.
Originally from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, he was raised in Western Canada until a move in 1968 led the family to Anchorage, Alaska.
Rick completed Junior College at Emmanuel College in 1973, married his college sweetheart Beverly Hood in 1974 and graduated from the first School of Christian Ministries graduating class in 1976.
Upon graduation, Rick and Beverly pursued a ministry opportunity transferring to the Western North Carolina Conference. For the next several years, Rick and Beverly served in Durham, Hillsborough, and Mayodan, N.C. churches. While there, the Haugs were blessed with their 3 children: Tyler, Josh and Lindsey.
In 1990, the Haugs accepted a call to Oklahoma City to pastor Muse Memorial. For the next 12 years they led Muse in renewal and revitalization. Muse Memorial transitioned to become River of Life and relocated to Northwest OKC in 2000 to a 20-acre, multi-million-dollar facility.
In 2010 Rick and Bev moved to Maiden, North Carolina, assuming the pastorate of Living Word Church. For the past six years they have reveled in pastoring what Rick calls “The Honey Hole”. Returning to the South, the Haugs are thrilled to be near their beloved alma mater. Along with their interest in World Missions, pastoral care ministry and community involvement, Rick and Bev thoroughly enjoy spoiling their three grandsons and preparing them for future enrollment at Emmanuel. Living Word Church has sent 7 students to Emmanuel this year with several waiting in the wings for next year. Their energetic Youth Pastor, and Rick’s associate, Brennan Travis has been instrumental in pointing the church’s teens to Emmanuel.
"When Rick told me he was sending seven students from his church to enroll at Emmanuel last fall, I was astounded," Dr. White said. He worked with Brennan Travis, and Eddie Williams, one of his church members and trustee at the College to garner tremendous support for their youth. In fact, the church established a scholarship program to assist students from their church which has been a huge success. I hope that other pastors follow Rick’s lead."

David Roberson
David and his wife Mary reside in Cary, North Carolina, and have three children Josh, Jarrod, and Elizabeth, all who have attended Emmanuel and is blessed with four grandchildren.
Over the last six decades, approximately 35 members of the Roberson family have attended Emmanuel College, and David is one of them. After attending Emmanuel, he furthered his education by attending Campbell University in North Carolina, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree.
David is the CEO of the David Allen Company in Raleigh, North Carolina. “Founded in 1920, the David Allen Company has grown to become one of the nation’s largest marble, granite, terrazzo, tile and underlayment contractors, with nearly 500 employees and craft professionals in its Raleigh, North Carolina, headquarters, and branch offices in Birmingham, Alabama; Columbia, South Carolina; Washington, DC.; and Miami, Florida.” Of the 500 employees at the David Allen Company, 12 are graduates of Emmanuel College.
With more than 45 years of experience, David has been nationally recognized throughout the flooring industry for his innovative leadership. In fact, earlier this year, the David Allen Company earned the honor of being named the Associated Builders and Contractors’ Contractor of the Year— “an award bestowed on a company that outshines others for its corporate integrity, commitment to the professional development and safety of employees, dedication to expert craftsmanship and esteem in the industry at large.”
He served on the board and as president of the National Terrazzo and Mosaic Association and currently serves as Chairman of the Emmanuel College Board of Trustees and as Chairman of the Emmanuel College Building and Grounds Committee. |
David has always kept Emmanuel College’s mission in mind. He is a spokesperson for the College, a promotor, recruiter, and friend. He and his family also support the College financially. Their major financial contributions include helping to build Emmanuel’s newest dormitory, Roberson Hall, and installing terrazzo flooring and doing concrete work in Roberson Hall, the Shaw Athletic Center, the Swails Center, Wellons Science Building, Shaw Library, and in the Lion’s Den Student Center.
Actively involved in the International Pentecostal Church, he is a former Sunday school teacher, youth leader, and deacon at Capital Pentecostal Holiness Church in Garner, North Carolina, where he has been singing in the choir for more than 40 years. He served the International Pentecostal Holiness Church on its Missions Board, Bylaws Committee, and the Piedmont Camp Meeting Association Board.|
"David is a special person. A lot of people talk, but David acts," Dr. White said. "It’s a wonderful quality in a person to take charge and solve challenges. He loves Emmanuel College and devotes time, energy, and financial resources to ensure the College’s success. We are privileged to have him serving as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, but more importantly, we are blessed to call him friend."
His efforts and abilities have been a beacon of light pointing the way for many to step forward and aid the college’s stability and support.
