In our modern era of the church, I have noticed that in some of our churches, not all, there is an absence of singing the great hymns and Gospel songs of the church. Consequently, our youth, young couples and older people are not getting in worship the kinds of Biblical theology that has been put to music to satisfy the souls of the worshipers and prepare them for daily living as a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ.
I feel compelled to begin a series of publishing some of the hymns and Gospel songs that have stood the test of time and have provided a solace for peace in the battles of life, an affirmation of one's salvation and walk with Jesus Christ, and a comfort to those who know Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
For several days I have been singing a great Gospel song we used to sing in our church in Birmingham, Alabama, that I have not heard sung in many years. It is entitled, "Never Alone."
Let me share with you the lyrics of this Gospel song that will be of great encouragement to many who are suffering today:
You may want to hear this song sung at the Hymn Sing in Atlanta at the First Baptist Church where Dr. Charles Stanley is pastor, by Gerald Wolfe who leads Gospel Singing. Click here to listen to Mark Trammell who sings the first stanza of this powerful song.
"Never Alone"
I've seen the lightning flashing,
And heard the thunder roll,
I've felt sin's breakers dashing,
Trying to conquer my soul;
I've heard the voice of my Savior,
Telling me still to fight on,
He promised never to leave me,
Never to leave me alone.
Refrain:
No, never alone,
No, never alone,
He promised never to leave me,
Never to leave me alone.
The world's fierce winds are blowing,
Temptation's sharp and keen,
I have a peace in knowing
My Savior stands between--
He stands to shield me from danger,
When earthly friends are gone,
He promised never to leave me,
Never to leave me alone.
When in affliction's valley
I'm treading the road of care,
My Savior helps me to carry
My cross when heavy to bear,
Though all around me is darkness,
Earthly joys all flown;
My Savior whispers His promise,
"I never will leave thee alone."
He died for me on the mountain,
For me they pierced His side,
For me He opened the fountain,
The crimson, cleansing tide;
For me He's waiting in glory,
Seated upon His throne,
He promised never to leave me,
Never to leave me alone.
[Editor's Comment: I want to dedicate this song, "Never Alone," to Wesley and Janice Russ. Continue to pray for Janice as she goes through radiation treatments to kill the cancer on her tongue. Wesley needs our prayers for additional strength, joy, and peace as God is healing Janice and granting her glowing health.]
