In our modern era of the church, I have noticed that in some of our churches, not all, there is an absence of singing the great hymns and Gospel songs of the church. Consequently, our youth, young couples and older people are not getting in worship the kinds of Biblical theology that has been put to music to satisfy the souls of the worshipers and prepare them for daily living as a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ.
I feel compelled to begin a series of publishing some of the hymns and Gospel songs that have stood the test of time and have provided a solace for peace in the battles of life, an affirmation of one's salvation and walk with Jesus Christ, and a comfort to those who know Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
Today we want to look at and hear this treasured hymn, "The Old Rugged Cross."
To hear and see acted out this classic Gospel hymn please Click Here on this hyperlink I have prepared for you. I found it on YouTube and found out that this a cappella rendering is sponsored by Liberty University. It's impossible not to love this Gospel classic "The Old Rugged Cross." And Kaoma's amazing a cappella version just blew me away. And I'm so amazed that this is only one guy! WOW.
Lyrics to "The Old Rugged Cross"
Lyrics and music by George Bennard
1. On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
the emblem of suffering and shame;
and I love that old cross where the Dearest and Best
for a world of lost sinners was slain.
Refrain:
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross,
till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
and exchange it some day for a crown.
2. O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
has a wondrous attraction for me;
for the dear Lamb of God left His glory above
to bear it to dark Calvary.
(Refrain)
3. In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
a wondrous beauty I see,
for 'twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
to pardon and sanctify me.
(Refrain)
4. To that old rugged cross I will ever be true,
its shame and reproach gladly bear;
then He'll call me some day to my home far away,
where His glory forever I'll share.
(Refrain)
