The SBC has amended its position on speaking in tongues. (Flickr/Creative Commons) Join us on our podcast each weekday for an interesting story, well told, from Charisma News. Listen at charismapodcastnetwork.com. After decade-long resistance, the Southern Baptist Convention will admit missionary candidates who speak in tongues, a practice associated with Pentecostal and charismatic churches. The new policy, approved by the denomination's International Mission Board on Wednesday (May 13), reverses a policy that was put in place 10 years ago. Speaking in tongues is an ancient Christian practice recorded in the New Testament in which people pray in a language they do not know, understand or control. The practice died out until Pentecostalism emerged around the turn of the 20th century. In Pentecostal churches it is considered one of many "gifts" of the Holy Spirit, including healing and the ability to prophesy. Allowing Southern Baptist missionaries to speak in tongues, or have what some SBC leaders call a "private prayer language," speaks to the growing strength of Pentecostal churches in Africa, Asia and South America, where Southern Baptists are competing for converts and where energized new Christians are enthusiastically embracing the practice. "In so many parts of the world, these charismatic experiences are normative," said Bill Leonard, professor of church history at Wake Forest Divinity School. "Religious groups that oppose them get left behind evangelistically." The change does not mean that Southern Baptists will commission missionaries who speak in tongues. But Wendy Norvelle, a spokeswoman for the IMB, said an affirmative answer regarding the practice would no longer lead to automatic disqualification. Southern Baptists have long prided themselves as among the world's most ambitious missionaries—reaching countries and regions few dared to go—but they are increasingly finding competition from fast-growing Pentecostal Christianity, which now has an estimated 300 million followers worldwide. In 2005, the International Mission Board created guidelines that specifically disqualified all missionary candidates who spoke in tongues. For Southern Baptists, the practice, also known as glossolalia, ended after the death of Jesus' apostles. The ban on speaking in tongues became a way to distinguish the denomination from others. These days, it can no longer afford that distinction. "Southern Baptists are experiencing such demographic trauma of membership and baptism they need new constituencies among nonwhite population," Leonard said. Indeed, the issue became such a lightning rod for Southern Baptists that it got top billing on the application form. "If someone said they did pray in tongues, they were automatically disqualified, essentially for being honest," said Wade Burleson, an Enid, Oklahoma, pastor who opposed the ban. The policy changes approved this week during an IMB trustee meeting in Louisville, Kentucky, will leave the question of tongues in the application. And the IMB said it will still end employment for any missionary who places "persistent emphasis on any specific gift of the Spirit as normative for all or to the extent such emphasis becomes disruptive," an FAQ on the IMB website explained. Other policy changes this week would allow divorced missionaries to serve in more positions, including long-term missions assignments. And the IMB will recognize baptisms performed by other Christian denominations so long as they involved full-body immersion. Previously, a Southern Baptist minister must have baptized missionary candidates who transferred from another denomination. © 2015 Religion News Service. All rights reserved. Army Day, Navy Day and Air Force Day were combined in 1949 to be Armed Forces Day, celebrated the 3RD SATURDAY IN MAY.
Army Day formerly was the date the US entered World War I. Navy Day was President Theodore Roosevelt's birthday. Air Force Day was the day the War Department established a division of aeronautics. President Richard Nixon remarked on Armed Forces Day, MAY 19, 1973, at Norfolk Naval Base: "Men and women who wear the uniform of our country are supposed to salute the Commander in Chief. .. but on this day, I, as your Commander in Chief, salute you, each and every American who serves in our Army, our Navy, our Air Force, our Marine Corps, and our Coast Guard.\ Your courage, your steadfastness are the backbone of America's influence for peace around the world ... We owe you...a debt of gratitude we can never fully repay ... -to the more than 2 million men and women now serving in uniform; -to the millions of veterans who have returned to civilian life; -to those missing in action and those magnificent men who 'roughed it out' in enemy prison camps; and above all, -to the memory of those who gave their lives for their country ... ... We are thankful, too, for the strengths and the sacrifices of America's military families ... We must reject the well-intentioned but misguided suggestions ... to slash America's defenses by billions of dollars. Let's move on to bigger, more important issues that concern us all. (Public Domain)
It's true that, during the presidential campaign, candidate Donald Trump promised that he would move our embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. It's true that 60 top Christian leaders, among many others, have called on the president to keep his word. It's true that the Republican Party platform stated, "We recognize Jerusalem as the eternal and indivisible capital of the Jewish state, and call for the American embassy to be moved there in fulfillment of U.S. law." And it's true that in 1995, Congress officially recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital, calling "for the U.S. Embassy to be moved there by May 31, 1999." But to do this would upset the Muslim world, further exacerbate the peace process, and potentially foment a new wave of terror attacks against Israel. Is the risk worth the reward? Things are fragile enough in the Middle East right now, so why alienate countries like Egypt? Why strain relationships with Saudi Arabia? Why make it more difficult to unite Muslim nations in a war against ISIS? And why add fuel to the fire of Palestinian terrorists? Why put Israeli lives at risk? The answer is simple: 1) Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, and there's probably no country on earth with a more ancient connection to its capital city. 2) We recognize the capitals of all other nations with whom we have relationships and we put our embassies there. 3) There is no legitimate reason for us not to treat Israel like every other nation on the planet. Why should we discriminate against our friend Israel, which is also our number one ally in the region? Isaiah 40:31
31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. KJV [Editor's comment: Learning to wait upon the Lord, to exercise patience, and to be a peace is a goal to achieve in one's life as a Christian. Far too often we want things to happen right now, and it may not be the best thing for all concerned. Standing back, taking a deep breath, and deliberating putting everything on hold is a virtue and in reality the right thing to do. God can get more things done for us and for others if we will just allow Him to do the work for us. He knows how to lift the heavy load and free us of worry and toil. The key is to wait. May this Scripture become a reality in your life this day. Your friend in all seasons, Hugh H. Morgan Editor: Hugh's News, Inc. E-mail: hugh@hughsnews.com] Ice Fishing
There were two old boys who loved to fish. They wanted to do some ice fishing so off to Grand lakes they go. The lake was frozen solid, so they stopped just before they got to the lake at a little bait shop and got all their tackle. One of them said, "We're going to need some ice picks." After they got their equipment, off they went to the lake. A couple of hours later, one of them was back at the shop and said, "We're going to need more ice picks." He paid for the picks and left. An hour later, he was back at the shop again and said, "We're going to need all the ice picks you've got." The bait man couldn't stand it any longer. "By the way," he asked, "how are you fellows doing?" "Not very well at all," the boy said. "We don't even have the boat in the water yet." The Lord is requiring us to walk in the spirit, daily! A week ago, the Lord awakened me throughout the night with a word: DAILY! There are things the Lord expects from each of us daily. Although we have moments of breakthrough or convergence, there is also a daily dynamic that we must learn to walk in. The Lord impressed upon me 10 areas of daily interaction. He actually said, "Until My people are moving with Me daily, they will not be walking in transformation!" I knew we were to do a 10-Day Prayer Focus using this revelation. The next 10 days, let's establish His Presence in our lives. 1. Offer a daily sacrifice. Read Number 28:24 - 29:26; Luke 11:1-4; Hebrews 10:11. Daily, there is something in us that we need to bring to Him. We are not legalistically bound by that, but the principle of connecting with Him is the same: we must connect with Him daily. 2. Daily extend love. Read Deut. 4:1-40; Ephesians 5. God is love. His love was meant to be extended daily to those we are in close relationship with, as well as those around us. How will you extend love some way on a daily basis? Once you start finding a way to release love, you'll see your life begin to change. 3. Call upon Him daily. Read Psalm 88. In the midst of your comings and goings, there is some way that you remember Him and cry out for Him to come. This is how His Name manifests in us. 4. Wisdom-watching daily. Read Proverbs 8. Too often we lean on our own understanding. But if you ask for wisdom, He will give you wisdom. The Word of God also says you have to watch for it coming to your gate. So it's not just asking for wisdom. Rather, watch so you can open the gate for wisdom to come in. 5. Ask for daily bread. Read Matthew 6. The Lord is going to bring the Body into a new way of praying, to unlock the next level of provision that we need. Asking for our daily bread involves a dimension of reviewing and presenting our needs daily. 6. Submit yourself to authority daily. Read Luke 7. There's a daily subjection to authority that we must understand and operate in. We need to watch and see how we are standing and how we are aligning ourselves. We should pray for authorities daily. This will always give you a proper alignment in your life. 7. There's something in your life you have to die to daily. Read 1 Cor. 15:30-34. We can't come into resurrection without death, and that's why Paul said, "Daily, I have to die." We must be aware of what it is that we're trying to keep alive, daily, that God is trying to kill. 8. Praise daily. Read Acts 2:47. For seven days we have praised. Praise opens the way for the Lord to add something to us. Praise is the pathway to unlock multiplication. Continue to praise to see daily addition end up in multiplication. 9. Discern daily. Read Hebrews 5:12-14. We must discern the spiritual forces operating around us. We discern two ways: by the Word and by the Spirit of God. The daily sacrifice where the Word is becoming a cycle in your life creates a daily unlocking of spiritual discernment, and that's where reality comes. You don't enter into reality just by knowing the Word; you have to discern by the Spirit. Spirit and truth together produce reality. 10. Seek first the Kingdom daily. Read Matthew 6:33 and 1 John 2:3. We must develop an understanding of the Kingdom of Heaven. Every kingdom has a culture, communication system and governing structure. We must learn to walk in God's culture, communicate from a heavenly perspective and embrace the dynamics of His Kingdom. I encourage you to grade yourself in each of these areas to see where you may be failing in your daily walk with the Lord. Begin to seek Him in a new way, and from a fresh perspective. Allow Him to put His finger on you and repent for any areas you have neglected. This is our time to become a daily people who seek after the Lord and all His benefits. Charles D. I don’t like to wait for my computer to boot up, for the light to turn green, for the oven to preheat, or for a scheduled call to come in. Waiting can seem like such a waste of time, especially when I have so much to do. It’s so hard to sit still.
But without a doubt, waiting on the Lord is the most difficult of all. Waiting for His promise to be fulfilled, for my prayer to be answered, for a door to open … His delays can seem so tedious. If, like me, you are waiting on the Lord for something He has promised, watch out! Guard the temptation to take matters into your own hands or run ahead of Him. Impatience is risky and more than likely will result in delay, disappointment and even disaster. “Wait, I say, on the Lord!” (Psalm 27:14). Increase my belief, trust and confidence in You and Your faithfulness. In Jesus’ Name. Amen. Decision Magazine, May 2017 How would we respond today if God wanted to repeat the miracle of Pentecost in one of our carefully scripted Sunday meetings? I wonder if we would embrace the unexpected wildness of that Acts 2 moment. Or would we tell the Spirit to behave? Pentecost was an abrupt heavenly invasion. It wasn't planned in a staff meeting; it came "suddenly," according to Acts 2:2. The noise of wind was not on the program; neither were flames of holy fire. No one in that prayer meeting in the upper room in Jerusalem expected to speak a supernatural language. Certainly Peter did not expect to give his unrehearsed sermon, and I'm sure he was surprised when 3,000 people were converted. The church was born in a moment of unearthly, unimagined strangeness. We will celebrate Pentecost this year on June 4. Would we have room for this miracle today if God wanted to do it again? Would we welcome the interruption? I fear we have enacted so many human controls that the Spirit is totally left out of our Sunday experience. If we don't give Him free rein, worship can become a man-made ritual that is stripped of God's power. The apostle Paul warned us not to "quench" the Spirit in 1 Thessalonians 5:19. "Quench" means to extinguish a fire. I fear that today our trendy churches have been equipped with state-of-the-art fire extinguishers that do a professional job of eliminating any risk of a holy outbreak. Let's be mindful of the most common ways that we quench the Holy Spirit. 1. We ignore the Holy Spirit. Many churches today make no mention of the Spirit. He is, as author Francis Chan says, the "forgotten God." We play it safe by focusing on Jesus and salvation—yet we forget that Jesus talked incessantly about the Spirit. And it was Jesus who told His followers that they must be "clothed with power from on high" (Luke 24:49). We are not being faithful to Christ if we don't take people into the deeper waters of the Spirit that He Himself promised. 2. We limit the gifts of the Holy Spirit. There are thousands of churches in this country that teach that the gifts of the Spirit no longer function. Even though the apostle Paul said, "Do not forbid speaking in tongues" (1 Cor. 14:39) and "Do not despise prophecies" (1 Thess. 5:20), speaking in tongues and prophecy are off-limits—along with healing and miracles. It was a lack of faith that created the doctrine known as "cessationism." Respected Bible teachers have convinced whole sectors of the church that God no longer operates supernaturally. Christianity has been reduced to an intellectual argument, devoid of power. And even in churches that wear the Pentecostal label, we have created such tight controls on our meetings that the gifts can't function. 3. We misuse or abuse the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We Pentecostals and charismatics have sometimes quenched the Spirit more than evangelicals who deny His power. We have whacked people to the floor or waved our sportcoats in the air to prove our "anointing," manipulated audiences with mood music, used fancy titles to fake apostolic authority and manufactured counterfeit miracles to con people to give in offerings. God forgive us. We cannot use the Spirit or His gifts to achieve our selfish agenda. Either we submit to His plan, or He withdraws and lets us play our silly games. 4. We misrepresent the Holy Spirit. How often have we heard, "Thus says the Lord," or "God told me this," when the Spirit had nothing to do with the message we cooked up on our own. When we give the Spirit credit for messages that did not originate from Him, we take the Lord's name in vain. There are many popular "prophets" given platforms today, but some of them bring lying words and false visions. Never let a charming false prophet mislead you with flattery, manipulation, exotic visions or promises of wealth. 5. We divide the Holy Spirit. When the apostle Paul corrected the Corinthians for quenching the Spirit, he addressed sexual sin and the abuse of spiritual gifts. But first He challenged them on the way they were treating each other. "Has Christ been divided?" he asked in 1 Corinthians 1:13. We grieve the Spirit when we judge each other, build walls, divide ourselves racially, follow personalities or create camps according to doctrine. The secret of Pentecost is found in Acts 2:1: "They were all with one accord in one place" (KJV). Can that be said of us today? We are divided between black and white, white and Hispanic, Republican and Democrat, Protestant and Catholic, denominational and non-denominational, evangelical and Pentecostal. We are fragmented and weak. We have quenched the Spirit with our disunity. Please join me in praying for a new Pentecost. Let's throw away our fire extinguishers and invite a fresh heavenly flame to engulf the church. J. Lee Grady was editor of Charisma for 11 years before he launched into full-time ministry in 2010. 24 Now unto Him Who is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, 25 To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen. KJV The importance of the pastor giving the benediction: The pastor who is wise will consider preparing the benediction for the close of the worship service with as much thought and diligence as he does in preparing the message he believes God has given him for his congregation. The benedictions recorded in the Bible are filled with revelation and life-changing truth. God uses these special moments prior to our departing the church sanctuary to minister to us in special ways according to our needs. Jude, a half brother of Jesus, gives us a life-changing benediction that continues to speak to us in the 21st Century. "Now unto Him Who is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen." What is Jude telling us? He is able to keep us from falling. What an amazing word of blessed assurance and hope. Jude is reminding us that God not only has the power to forgive us of our sins and take away the guilt associated with our sins, but He is able to keep us from falling. It is our part to believe God will do this for us as we trust Him. To walk with Christ means that He enables us daily to walk uprightly before Him in truth. He will present us before God--without fault! Our Christian faith involves a daily walk with Jesus. He wants an intimate ever present relationship with Him. Although we do stumble, God gives us grace to regain our balance and steady our steps. The day is coming when you and I will stand before God. This benediction is a great source of joy because that Jesus Himself will present us faultless. With great joy. This benediction reminds us of our divine destiny that awaits us. At the end of our life's journey in walking with Jesus Christ there is joy, even great joy or exceeding joy. The best is yet to come. The Author of these promises is God Himself, even our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ, Who has the glory, majesty, power and authority to bring is all to pass. Will you as a worshiper this Sunday stay and wait for the benediction? I want God's Word spoken over me as I leave church this Sunday. |
