What a blessing our son, Greg, is to Melvine and me. He has the Master's touch of gentleness, kindness, patience and love for both his mother and me, his father. We could never ask for a better son. He knows how to relate to his mother, and she eats it up.
About 8 o'clock on Saturday morning, Melvine and I awakened together at the same time. She told me she was hurting. I told her that I could give her all her medications. I already had them prepared in a little container for each day of the week. While she remained in bed, I carried a tiny 3 once Dixie cup with her meds to her. Her thermos with water was on her night stand. I helped her to open it since she was having difficulty. I was stretched all across our King Sized bed as she swallowed all of the pills at once. I can't do that. I have to swallow one at a time.
Meanwhile, I tried to slide off the bed to re-position myself in bed. To my shock, it had never happened before, I began to slide on the hardwood floors in our bedroom. I had on white socks. I could not get any traction. I fell to my knees. I could not get up. I called Greg, and he heard my call from his bedroom 100 or more feet away, and came running to help me. Had he not been here, I am not sure what I could have done to get up. Greg is a tall, strong man and knew exactly what to do to help me get up. I noticed later, I had cut or skinned my toes and blood was coming out.
This was a wake up call for me. Either I will no longer wear socks in our home or I will get those socks you are given in the hospital with traction tread on them. So, I ordered some at my pharmacy and Greg picked them up for me.
Throughout the day Melvine would try to tell me something of importance to her that she wanted me to know, but for the life of her, she could not get it out. God is giving me a dose of patience I never had before, and I wait and listen intently. I am in no hurry to know what it is. I will wait on her.
Later in the day, Greg told us it was Joyce Baker McKay's birthday today, Saturday, March 23. Immediately, Melvine picked up on it. She has a memory for dates, birth dates, wedding anniversaries like a elephant. She is a great historian, too. So, I am the impulsive type, and I immediately called Joyce who lives in Hoover, Alabama over the mountains south of Birmingham. Melvine and Greg got on the phones, we have five of them, and Melvine talked rationally with Joyce. She was her normal self and began to ask Joyce questions. Then, all of a sudden, God gave Melvine a Word for Joyce. It was right on target. I was amazed and rejoiced that God still operates in Melvine's spirit and speech for His glory and honor. New hope arose in my heart for Melvine's future on planet earth. She was able to express her love for Joyce who has been a true friend for many years and affirm Joyce at this particular season of her life.
Melvine's vital signs are good. The Metformin she was taking has not hurt her blood sugar level. In fact, they have come down. That is good, better than when she was taking Metformin. That amazes me. Our family doctor was right.
Melvine ate better and drank more today. I do not know what is in store for today, Sunday, but if she feels up to it, we will get ready and go to church. Now, I don't know that we will. But, I can tell you we would like to be present.
By the way, I wanted you to know that Greg prepared supper for us. He brought home his George Foreman Grill. He had pork chops, twice baked potatoes, green beans, bread and butter, and a diet coke. I loved it and enjoyed it.
Have a blessed day.
