Grandpa was telling his young grandson what life was like when he was a boy.

"In the winter we’d ice skate on our pond. In the summer we could swim in the pond, and pick berries in the woods. We’d swing on an old tire my dad hung from a tree on a rope. And we had a pony we rode all over the farm."

The little boy was amazed, and sat silently for a minute.

Finally he said,
"Granddad, I wish I'd gotten to know you a lot sooner!"

What We Lost When We Lost Our Hymnals

3/31/2017

I don’t think we should go back to using hymnals. But I do think there’s value in considering what we lost when, over the course of a relatively short period of time, we gave up hymnals for PowerPoint projection. Not all of us, mind you, but most of us. It’s worth considering because it helpfully shows what we stand to lose when we switch from one media to another, and especially when we do so quickly and without due consideration.

If we were to go back in time twenty or thirty years, we would find that most churches had hymnals. They had hymnals because it was the best way of providing each member of the congregation with a copy of the songs. You’d hear it in every church: “Take out your hymnal and turn to hymn 154…” And then hymnals went the way of the dodo and we began to look instead to words projected on a screen. Here is some of what we lost along the way.

We lost an established body of songs. Hymnals communicated that a church had an established collection of songs. This, in turn, communicated that its songs were vetted carefully and added to its repertoire only after careful consideration. After all, great songs are not written every day and their worth is proven only over time. Therefore, new hymns would be chosen carefully and added to new editions of the hymnal only occasionally. Churches would update their hymnals, and, therefore, their established body of songs, only once every ten or fifteen years.

We lost a deep knowledge of our songs. When we removed the hymnal, we gained the ability to add new songs to our repertoire whenever we encounter one we deem worthy. And we do—we add new songs all the time. As we add new songs with greater regularity, we sing old songs with less frequency. This reduces our familiarity with our songs so that today we have far fewer of them fixed in our minds and hearts. Few congregations could sing even the greatest hymns without that PowerPoint screen.

We lost the ability to do harmonies. Hymnody grew up at a time when instrumentation took a back seat to the voice. Hymns were most often written so they could be sung a cappella or with minimal instrumentation. For that reason, hymnals almost invariably included the music for both melody and harmonies and congregations learned to sing the parts. The loss of the hymnal and the associated rise of the worship band has reduced our ability to harmonize and, in that way, to sing to the fullest of our abilities. It often seems like all we want from the congregation is their enthusiasm.

We lost the ability to sing skillfully. As congregations have lost their knowledge of their songs, they have lost the ability to sing them well. We tend to compensate for our poorly-sung songs by cranking up the volume of the musical accompaniment. The loss of the voice has given rise to the gain of the amplifier. This leads to our music being dominated by a few instrumentalists and perhaps a pair of miced-up vocalists while the larger congregation plays only a meager role. In fact, it often seems like all we want from the congregation is their enthusiasm.

We lost the ability to have the songs in our homes. Hymnals usually lived at the church, resting from Monday to Saturday in the little pockets on the back of the pews. But people also bought their own and took them home so the family could have that established body of songs there as well. Families would often sing together as part of their family worship. It is easy to imagine a family singing “It Is Well With My Soul” after eating dinner together, but almost impossible to imagine them singing, “Oceans.”

It is probably too late to go back to the hymnal. I am not at all convinced we ought to. But it is still worth considering what we lost along the way and how congregational singing has been utterly transformed by what may appear to have been a simple and practical switch in the media. That little change from book to screen changed nearly everything.

Mrs. Margaret Kathryn Pearson Swindel 1929-2017

Margaret Kathryn Pearson was born in Athens, GA, February 14, 1929.

Mrs. Swindel, beloved wife of 70 years to Samuel C. Swindel, was the daughter of the late Bertie Mae Goodrum Pearson, and father, Harvey Newton Pearson.  Two sisters, Annie Ruth Pearson and Lorene Pearson Sorrow, and three brothers, Leroy Pearson, Harold Pearson, and Vinson Pearson also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Swindel went to be with her Savior Wednesday, March 29, 2017, in her home surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Swindel loved God and her church, was a loving devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend to many people. Kathryn and Sam married young, 17 and 18, and celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in September 2016. Kathryn grew up in Athens and was a member of the Athens First Pentecostal Holiness Church. She taught a young girls Sunday school class and led a young girls choir at her church. She loved to sing and often did so in church choirs as well as with her family. Kathryn also served as a Brownie Scout leader.

She spent her early young life as a mother and business partner working with her husband Sam. She later held the position of Administratsesive Graduate Assistant for the College of Business Masters Program at the University of Georgia for 17 years. After retirement, Kathryn and Sam took up residence in Hiawassee, GA, where she enjoyed going to church, gardening and helping neighbors. Her flowers and vegetable gardens were a source of much joy to Kathryn. Last but not least, she was an avid Georgia football fan, never missing the opportunity to wear one of her many Georgia tee-shirts while listening to the radio or television coverage of her favorite team.

Survivors include her husband, Samuel C. Swindel, three daughters and their husbands, Diana and Michael Annast of Hiawassee, GA; Janis and Jack Dalton, of Danielsville, GA, and Denise and Mel Brown and Tim Dalton of Fredericksburg, VA, April and Sean Kirk of Gaithersburg, MD, and Christie  and Seth Chambers of Jefferson, GA.  There are 9 much loved great-grandchildren; siblings; Willette Jackson, Frank Pearson, Eugene Pearson, Vonnie Parnell; Blenda Smith and Rebecca Bradberry, along with many loving nieces and nephews.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Kathryn’s memory to The Christian Life Worship Center, ATTN: Handicapped Access Ramp, 125 Kathwood Drive, Athens, GA 30607.

Lord and Stephens West is in charge of arrangements.

[Editor's Comment: It was my privilege and distinct honor to serve Kathryn and Sam Swindel as their pastor at Tarkenton Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church for nine years. They were faithful church members, ever eager to help where they were able to do so.

Kathryn taught a teenage girls Sunday school class. She and Sam had many outings at their home for the teenagers in our church.

During my pastorate I often visited in their lovely home. I have eaten at Kathryn's table on several occasions, and I can attest to the fact that she was an an excellent cook.

One of the things I noticed was Kathryn and Sam's love for each other. They were devoted and caring for each other. They serve as a role model for successful marriages.

Whenever I visited with them, I was always lifted up in my spirit and strengthened in my faith. It is a wonderful thing to have dedicated members of your church.  I could always count on them.

It is my sincere prayer that the legacy Kathryn has left us will inspire us all to give God our very best. To the family Melvine and I send our love and condolences in their time of grief.]

Hugh, Thank you for sharing about this meeting tonight and tomorrow night in Maiden, NC. For 30 years I have prayed about meetings in stadiums. Just two week ends ago three other intercessors and I went to Scott Stadium at UVA and then on to JMU in Harrisonburg, VA to pray over those college stadiums.

This is an exciting time to be alive. God is pouring out His Glory on our nation once again. I join with the pastors in agreement that Maiden will have a move of God that will even spread to neighboring communities. Please follow up with a report of the events of this week end.

Shalom, Mary Anne Weeks

The Pocket Book

My wife of 32 years has been complaining about things missing from her pocketbook/purse. Of course I have been accused as the pocketbook thief for which I emphatically denied. This morning she emptied the contents on the kitchen bar and I was amazed by the large pile.

I made some comment about the size of her pocketbook and Granny Giles pocketbook, you know, the size of sampsonite luggage, and was immediately corrected that it was a pocketbook/tote...

OK. Most items were thrown away that should have already been thrown away but had been put in "The Pocketbook" and carried around...and around...and around.

Amazingly the missing items were located; having somehow managed to get in between the lining and were inaccessible. It seemed magical how all these items could "disappear" in that vast pit called "the pocketbook."

Finally, the opening in the lining was discovered, and by coincidence it was just before my pocketknife was used to release the captive items. Out came several pens, a nail clipper, lipstick, money, ear rings, cough drops, and the list goes on. I just did not say anything else...

Amos 5:24
But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.
KJV
[Editor's commentary: For this Scripture to be actualized it will require repentance and a new birth experience where Jesus Christ is preeminent in the lives of God's people. Justice and righteousness will be the crowning jewel of the community as people exercise love, compassion, and a listening ear. We often refer to this phenomenon as a revival. It is the kind of a spiritual awakening where Christians love everybody. I remember an old Gospel song that says, "Give me that old-time religion--it makes me love everybody."]

"Change, it is a-coming!" by The Honorable Allen B. Clark, Contributing Writer for Hugh's News

3/29/2017

PictureThe Honorable Allen B. Clarke, former Assistant Secretary for Veterans Liaison at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
Several decades ago Gregory Peck portrayed in the movie "MacArthur," General Douglas MacArthur, my childhood hero whom I  personally have seen twice. There is a scene in which MacArthur and President Roosevelt in 1943 conferred about the war in the Pacific on a ship somewhere in the Pacific. MacArthur had not been back to the United States, since he had lived in the Philippines from 1935, where he was training their Army. In the course of the conversation the President said to MacArthur, "You ought to come back to the United States. Things are changing." We all recall certain lines or scenes from our favorite movies and this was one indelibly imprinted in my memory. MacArthur replied, "Mr. President, the things I believe in never change!"

In my 75th year I can attest to this belief. This past Saturday night Linda and I attended our alumni annual Founder's Day celebration of West Point, founded March 16, 1802. One of our annual traditions is to hear remarks from both the oldest and youngest graduates present. The contrast in their remarks ranging from 1956 to 2010 was striking. The oldest grad spoken in such a dignified and measured manner pointing out the changes at our Alma Mater, not necessarily decrying any of them, but nevertheless indicating the difficulty as one ages to accept certain "changes." Our eminent speaker spoke of our motto which binds old and new graduates together, "Duty, Honor, Country." That never changes. Many other cultural manifestations change constantly and I remember a pastor one time illustrate the changing mores of the society by way of a frame of behavior that keeps moving over and becoming larger in its negativity and lowering of standards of civility

In Matthew 24:35 (KJV) it is written, "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but My Words shall not pass away." These words I have attempted mightily to incorporate in my soul and spirit and carry through in thoughts, words, and deeds have not changed. They are in no particular order: to have totally en-grafted in me that God created all; that Jesus is He Who came to earth to die for my personal sins and to provide a way for me to achieve eternal life through faith in Him; to verbally articulate this belief appropriately; that the Holy Spirit was given to us to indwell us and move us to strength in faith which is followed by good works to serve others; for the Holy Spirit to live in me; to offer constant praise to God; not to accept our culture's non-Christian values; God's Word is the power we need for our lives in obedience and changes for the good; I ask the Holy Spirit to change me where needed for adherence to the Gospel message; that I would confess as a sin any resentments held toward others and ask forgiveness.

We just returned from a twelve day trip to Israel and our personal tour guide, Shooki Makovky, gifted me a treasure at his home, where he had invited Linda and me to share Shabat Friday meal with his wife and three daughters. The gift was a copy of the The Stone Edition of the Chumash, the Torah with commentary. The significance of God's Word is expressed in the introduction in an anecdote. There is on page xxv a story in a section titled "Indestructible Letters." "When the ancient Romans condemned the Mishnaic sage Rabbi Chanina ben Teradyon to death for the 'crime' of teaching the Torah, they wrapped him in a Torah scroll and set him aflame. As his agony reached its climax, his students asked him, 'Rabbi, what do you see?' He answered, 'The parchments are consumed, and the letters fly up [to heaven]'...The letters are eternal for they are the will of the eternal." So too are the words of our Lord in our Bible. They do not change.

1 John 3:22 (KJV): " I know that my prayers are answered because I obey His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight."

Society, its standards, and Caesar's world may change. These Words above I will not change!

[Two years after graduation from West Point, Allen Clark volunteered for a tour in Vietnam where he served as a Military Intelligence officer assigned to the Fifth Special Forces Group. He sustained injuries in an early-morning mortar attack at the Dak To Special Forces camp on June 17, 1967, that necessitated the amputation of both of  his legs below the knees. He was honored to have his service recognized by being awarded a Silver Star for Gallantry in Action, the Purple Heart, and the Combat Infantryman's Badge.

Since then, Allen has served in various government roles, including an appointment in the President George H. W. Bush Administration as Assistant Secretary for Veterans Liaison at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. His autobiography, titled Wounded Soldier, Healing Warrior was published by Zenith Press. It is out of print with some availability on Amazon. Allen's second book published by Casemate is Valor in Vietnam, a history of the war told by individuals in the war.

It was my distinct privilege and great honor to be asked by Allen and his wife, Linda, to be their personal pastor. They are Spirit-filled Anglicans. I hold this relationship with Allen and Linda as a sacred trust. The reside in Plano, TX.

I am so very proud of Allen and his great ability to articulate his faith in Jesus Christ as His Savior and Lord.  He is not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.]

PictureBishop James D. Leggett, President, Holmes Bible College
On March 3, 2017, alumni, friends, faculty, staff, and students gathered in the Holmes Memorial Church for the annual Alumni Banquet. Upon this occasion, President James D. Leggett was honored for his years of service to Holmes Bible College.

Bishop Doyle Marley, President of the Holmes Board of Trustees, made a special presentation to Dr. and Mrs. Leggett. Here, reprinted with permission, is the story as reported by Bishop Marley.

"Friday, March 3, was a very special day at Holmes Bible College as friends and alumni gathered for the annual Holmes Alumni Banquet. In light of his decision to retire as president at the end of this current school year, the Holmes Board of Trustees and Alumni Board used the occasion to honor Dr. and Mrs. James D. Leggett for their service to Holmes for the past eight years. Anticipation filled the air as invited guests, General Church officials, alumni and family members gathered for the surprise event.

"Dr. Leggett was officially installed as the fifth president of Holmes on October 1, 2009. He entered the office with outstanding credentials. Leggett holds a Bachelor of Theology from Holmes Bible College and a bachelor's from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. He was awarded a Doctor of Divinity from Holmes Bible College in 1988.

"For 24 years, he served as a pastor in the North Carolina Conference and was elected to serve as the superintendent of that conference in 1986. He was elected assistant General Superintendent of the denomination in 1989, and from 1989 to 1997 his portfolio included executive director of Evangelism USA and president of the Extension Loan Fund.

"Bishop Leggett was elected General Superintendent in August 1997 and again in 2001 by acclamation to another four-year term. In 2005, he was re-elected for a third term as Presiding Bishop. He served in this leadership role until July 2009.

"Bishop Leggett has also served in various positions in the Evangelical-Pentecostal Church: co-chair of the Pentecostal/Charismatic Churches of North America (PCCNA), chairman of the World Pentecostal Conference, the first president of the Evangelical-Pentecostals in Christian Churches Together, the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE), the International Charismatic Executive Committee and Religious Alliance Against Pornography.

"It was against the backdrop of these outstanding accomplishments that Brother Leggett assumed leadership of Holmes during a critical time. The future of the College was tenuous at best, but Bishop Leggett's vision for the future was used by God to bring the school to its current standing
"His leadership and administrative skills have been manifested over the past eight years in so many ways. When he assumed his leadership role as president, the only building on the campus was the Administration
Building. All of the other structures, including the Holmes Memorial Church building, are a testimony to his ability and skill as a true leader, teacher and administrator. Growth and expansion continue as another building is currently under construction, and an additional student housing building should be complete in time for the fall semester. It is safe to say that Brother Leggett's tenure has been the most productive of any president since that of Dr. Paul F. Beacham.

"Thanks to a recent estate gift to Holmes, Brother Leggett was able to make the formal announcement at the Alumni Banquet that the college is debt free. To God be the glory, great things He has done!

"Bishop Leggett's greatest legacy may turn out to be the service he has rendered as president of Holmes Bible College. Hundreds of young men and women have already been influenced by his example and many more will reap the benefits of his labor as they are trained and go out to serve in the Master's vineyards.

"Bishop and Mrs. Leggett were given a number of appropriate recognition awards including the first ever Lifetime Achievement Award from the college and a substantial monetary gift. A letter from General Superintendent Doug Beacham was read by Bishop Talmadge Gardner expressing gratitude on behalf of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church for Brother Leggett's service.

"We can never truly repay Bishop and Mrs. Leggett for all they have done and the sacrifices they have made, but we want them to know that we love and appreciate them more than they can ever know."

[Editor's Comment: It has been my privilege to have known James Leggett since he was a student in the high school at Holmes Bible College. He was a serious student who studied the Bible and Biblical theology under the gifted and anointed teaching of Dr. Paul F. Beacham. It is my opinion that Paul F. Beacham was the greatest Pentecostal Biblical scholar and teacher of English Bible in the 20th Century.

I met Faye at Holmes Bible College as well. God has blessed this couple with a beautiful family and their children are all involved in the ministry of the church.

I have written extensively about James D. Leggett and his presidency in previous Hugh's News newsletters. I know of no other leader in the Pentecostal Holiness Church who could have accomplished what he has done in bringing the church and God's people back to love, honor, and support Holmes Bible College.

It is apparent that God called and ordained James D. Leggett to become the sixth president of the college, following the interim presidency of the Rev. Dr. G. Earl Beatty who served a year and 4 months as the president. Let us never forget G. Earl Beatty and the significant role he played in the history of Holmes Bible College. I understand he is finally retiring this May. It is my prayer that God continue to bless Earl and Nancy Beatty.

Here is my historical record of those who have served as president of Holmes Bible College:

1. N. J. Holmes, founder and first president
2. Paul F. Beacham
3. Kenneth Benson
4. Richard Waters
5. G. Earl Beatty
6. James D. Leggett

Let us never forget these men who have served this great Bible College.

The church needs Holmes Bible College to produce preachers, pastors, military chaplains, missionaries, teachers, scientists, and businessmen.

God has raised up Holmes Bible College to serve the church in these closing years prior to the return of Jesus to make a lasting impact on the world. We celebrate a glorious history, but it is my opinion that the future is brighter will surpass all that has been achieved in the past. May God's hand continue to rest upon Holmes Bible College.

It is significant that Bishop D. Chris Thompson will succeed Bishop James D. Leggett at the close of the 28th General Conference. He will be the 7th president. He is the right man at the right time to continue the great ministry of Holmes Bible College. Bishop Thompson is an excellent preacher, teacher and administrator. Chris and Betty Thompson are a good fit for Holmes Bible College.

Each of our colleges has a mission to fulfill. They will be successful if they will continue to produce preachers.  May God continue to bless Holmes Bible College, Emmanuel College, Southwestern Christian University and Advantage College.]

Funeral service will be held Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 4 p. m. at Lord and Stephens West Chapel. The family will receive friends from 2-4 prior to the service at the funeral home. Entombment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.

It is my sincere prayer that the legacy Kathyrn has left us will inspire us all to give God our very best. To the family Melvine and I send our love and condolences in their time of grief.]
