Presiding Bishop Beacham visited Hong Kong
Rev. Dr. Doug Beacham, Presiding Bishop of International Pentecostal Holiness Church (IPHC), made a brief visit to Hong Kong in February. The main objective of this trip was to officiate the Golden Jubilee of PHC Wing Kwong College. During his 6-day stay, the Presiding Bishop has visited the PHC Junior School, which would commence operation this coming September. Dr. Beacham also attended the Sunday Service at PHC Rousseau Memorial Assembly and gave a sermon. The day before he left, he hosted a seminar for pastors of all three Conferences of Hong Kong PHC, discussing how to promote evangelism globally. He then stayed with them for lunch and fellowship at the café of Stone Houses Family Garden.

Having turned 75 in January, Rev. Dr. Beacham is still full of vitality with his schedule incredibly packed. A couple of work trips are yet to be accomplished after he returned home from Hong Kong. He recalled his wife, Susan, couldn’t help but got a bit worried: “Do you really think you are still very young?” so she asked. Yet the Presiding Bishop wanted to seize the rest of tenure to get in touch with as many co-workers in different places as possible. When the time of retirement comes, he will be passionately glad to resume his book writing, a task he currently couldn’t possibly focus on.
In his sermon at PHC Wing Kwong College’s Golden Jubilee Thanksgiving Service, the Presiding Bishop quoted Hebrews 13:7-8: “Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” He mentioned that education is about the convergence of three things: 1) knowledge; 2) people; and 3) wisdom. Knowledge is information. It’s the content of the classes taught at this college. But knowledge without wisdom is either lost information or worse, information used inappropriately. It is the teacher, the people, who shape the values of students that leads to the right use of information. It is part of the DNA of this college that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge and wisdom,” as Proverbs 1:7 and other passages reflect.
“We also need to think about the differences there will be between today and the year 2074, fifty years in the future. I believe Wing Kwong College will still be here, educating and shaping the lives of thousands of young people. Your opportunity and challenge are to reflect on the past as you prepare for the future.
Wing Kwong College continues to change. It changes as new teachers, new administrators and staff, and especially new students, bring their unique generational dynamics to each year. That is a good thing. But Wing Kwong College is established on Someone Who does not change, Jesus Christ, the Son of God and Savior of the world.
This is why I have shared Hebrews 13:7, 8 with you. Verse 7 is about the people in our lives who influence us. To the leaders and teachers of Wing Kwong College, I appeal to you to be shaped by the Word of God, the Bible in your life. Be a person of faith, a person who trusts the Lord and whose life is such that others are influenced positively by you.
But verse 8 is the foundation, the stability for us and for Wing Kwong College. It is not a philosophy or concept. The unchangeable foundation is a person, the eternal Son of God, Jesus the Messiah of Israel, and Savior of the world. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. “
