Today, July 22, is a travel day for Melvine and me. We are on our way to Orlando to attend the Chaplains Ministries, IPHC Dinner Banquet on Sunday evening, July 23, at 6 o'clock. Our IPHC military chaplains and their spouses will be there for the banquet and a day of training on Monday, July 24.
Chaplain (Colonel) Jerry J. Jones, US Army Retired is our Director/Endorser. He has planned this event just before our 28th General Conference. Both active duty and retired chaplains, as well as one chaplains assistant, will be present not only for these pre-General Conference events but to serve as delegates at our 28th General Conference, 26-28 July.
Melvine and I are blessed to have a lady chauffeur to drive us. She is Jeanette Herndon Phillips, wife of Ken Phillips. Jeanette is the daughter of the Rev. Mr. Malcolm Herndon, Retired Chief Master Sergeant, USAFR retired, and a retired math and science teacher at Emmanuel College. He was a Chaplains Assistant and taught Chaplain Assistants in the Air Force training center during his outstanding career. He is an ordained minister of the Gospel in the Cornerstone Conference, formerly known as the Western North Carolina Conference.
Jeanette is a retired Math and Science teacher in the public school system in Georgia, namely, Oconee County. She is a gifted teacher and leader in our church. She is noted for her work and ministry to the youth of our church, as as well as a member of our worship team, and a member of our church council. It was she who put together the plans and execution of those plans to renovate our church kitchen, fellowship hall (called Stephanie's Place), hallway, and the entrance to the educational facility.
Our son, Greg, could not drive for us as we had planned. In the meantime, God gave him a full-time teaching position at Moore Middle School in Gwinnett County where he will be teaching sixth grade autistic students. Although he has a degree in music education, he has met all the requirements to teach Special Education and is certified by the board of education. He will use his music talents, play a keyboard, and teach these precious students fun songs that will touch them to the core of their being. It maybe that God will enable Greg to have breakthroughs in teaching these students. Greg has a B. A. degree in Music Education from Oral Roberts University. He is a gifted and talented pianist and enjoys singing and directing choirs and ensembles. He teaches piano and voice lessons. He was a member of the Oral Roberts Concert Choir and sang on the Oral Roberts television program. He sang one summer with one of the traveling choirs of the Celebrant Singers in Visalia, California.
This will be a short trip for us in the length of time. We need to drive back home on Monday. It is an eight-hour drive. We will be in our newly acquired (April 12) 2010 Lincoln Town Car, Continental Series, with low mileage and in mint condition. Please pray for us that God will give us traveling mercies.
Because of the physical issues that I have, I am not up to the rigors of walking and getting around at General Conference. I am scheduled to have a total right hip replacement on Monday, July 28, at St. Mary's Hospital in Athens, GA. Dr. Ormonde Mahoney, the leading orthopedic surgeon in the southeast if not the country will do my surgery. He had previously done a total right knee replacement a few years ago with success.
We covet your prayers for us as we travel, as well as hundreds of our IPHC people who are traveling to General Conference this next week in Orlando.
