This true story was sent to me by my friend the Honorable Mr. Allen B. Clark about a conversation he recently had with his six-year-old grandson, Beau.
The following is what Allen wrote:
I just came back from visiting my daughter in Maryland. She has a six-year-old son, Beau. I had some private time with him in the car and we began to talk.
Beau: "I am going to be a soldier."
Grandfather: "What made you want to be a soldier?"
Beau: "Because you were."
Grandfather: "Do you have any questions you would like to ask me?"
Beau: "Yes, what did you do?"
Grandfather: "We are free in our country because soldiers like me went to other countries to fight the bad guys and I did that many years ago."
Beau, very quizzically: "You mean there are bad guys not on TV?"
Will become my favorite grandson story for all time, Hugh.
