It has been my privilege to know Lou and Becky Reed Shirey for decades. Melvine and I knew their parents. We attended the funeral services for both Lou's father and mother, Chaplain (Colonel) Ervin and Miss Millie Shirey. We attended Lou's retirement at Fort Polk, LA. Becky is a marvelous cook and prepared a six course dinner in their quarters on post for about 25 people with china, silver ware, cloth napkins, etc. She is a gracious hostess.
When I was in graduate school in Atlanta in 1973, paid for by the Air Force on a scholarship in Clinical Pastoral Education in supervisory training, we lived in Stone Mountain. Lou and Becky had been on a trip and spent one night with us, and allowed Melvine and me to keep Hope, their first born daughter who was a baby, for a day. Becky's parents, Guy and Elizabeth Reed, had kept her and they brought Hope to our home. They lived in Greenwood, SC.
I think it was in 2015 that we all attended the fifth Global Summit in Honk Kong. We, Melvine, Greg and I were on the same fight from Hong Kong to Seattle and sat near each other along with a number of IPHC folks. I have followed their ministry since Lou retired from the Army Chaplaincy after twenty-six years of distinguished service to our country.
Several weeks ago, Lou called me to inform me that Becky had written her first book entitled, Sight Unseen, and that it would be published in October. He asked if I would consider promoting her book in Hugh's News. On Friday, I received a copy of Becky's book in the mail, and finished reading it today, Sunday, October 10.
In addition, I received an email from Steve Spillman, the publisher and owner of True Potential, Inc., requesting that I consider promoting it in Hugh's News. He has become a subscriber to Hugh's News.
Bishop Doug Beacham, General Superintendent of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church, wrote an endorsement. He said that he and Susan, his wife, a sister to Rebecca, knew first hand the inspiring account that Becky shares in her story.
Lee Grady wrote the forward to this book. He remembered thinking to himself, "This is a woman who knows how to hear the voice of God." He decided that day this is a woman he should watch.
Chris Maxwell, a gifted and prolific writer, author, and speaker, encouraged Becky to write the book.
Bane and Barbara James were instrumental in providing counsel to clarify God's call upon her life and give direction.
And now for my comments about Rebecca Shirey's book:
I was impressed with how God has led Rebecca in an in-depth study of the Bible. The Lord led her to a decade of intense Bible study preparation before releasing her into speaking, teaching, and writing ministry. Since then she has spoken in 12 countries and venues throughout the United States.
While they were in the Army Rebecca got involved in Protestant Women of the Chapel, and has grown up through the ranks of that organization to serve on national and international boards. She is a frequent speaker to these PWOC chapters at military installations.
Prior to Lou's retirement from the Army, he was interviewed and vetted to receive a full scholarship in the Beeson School of Pastoral Leadership and Biblical Preaching at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky for one year. It is a D. Min. degree program. Pastors from all over the world had applied for one of only 20 slots. To be selected is indeed a high honor. They traveled to leading churches in the United States and to Seoul, Korea, that included spouses as well as the Biblical Studies course, taught on site in Israel, Egypt and Jordan. Becky was allowed to audit the courses and she took advantage of the opportunity. She is a dedicated student and is eager to learn.
After the year of study, Lou began his doctoral thesis. However, God nudged them to live by faith and not sight, and they had various experiences where God was teaching them how to listen to the voice of God and be obedient. The account is mind-boggling to say the least. They lived out of their car, but did not sleep in it. However, God provided shelter, resources, and people to help them in their faith journey and they were able to bless those who helped them.
I could not put the book down until I had read it completely, making notes and underling faith statements. She is a gifted writer, and gives details of the things that happened during the years of their intimate walk with the Lord.
You will benefit from the experiences of Lou and Rebecca as she tells the incredible story of God's amazing grace working in their lives. It is a must read. May I encourage you to read it.
