Memorial Services for Dr. Vinson Synan
A memorial service honoring the life and ministry of Dr. Vinson Synan will take place on Saturday, May 30, at 1:00 p.m. in Christ's Chapel, on the campus of Oral Roberts University. The service is open to the public. Oral Roberts University is located at 7777 S. Lewis Avenue, Tulsa, OK, 74171.
Speakers will include Dr. Doug Beacham, General Superintendent of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church, Dr. William Wilson, President of Oral Roberts University, and other church and educational leaders. Music will be provided by members of Dr. Synan's family and by IPHC pianist, Laban West. The event will also be live-streamed by ORU.
Dr. Synan left this earth and entered the presence of the Lord on March 15. A second memorial service is tentatively scheduled on the campus of Regent University in Virginia Beach, VA, on Saturday, June 20. Dr. Synan will be buried in Chester, VA, next to his parents, Bishop J.A. and MInnis Synan.
[Editor's Comment: Vinson Synan was a friend of mine. I have known him for decades. Our paths crosses many times. I had the privilege to nominate him for the office of Secretary of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church at the General Conference in Roanoke, VA. He was elected. A few years later, Bishop J. Floyd Williams called me and asked if I would consider resigning my commission as an Air Force officer and chaplain to come to Oklahoma City to be the successor to Dr. W. R. Corvin who had resigned as president of Southwestern College. In the providence of God, I became the third president of Southwestern College, now Southwestern Christian University in Bethany, OK. Vinson taught history at Southwestern and we worked together there. I have read many of Vinson's books and promoted them in Hugh's News.
Probably one of the best things Vinson did for me was write about my ministry at a Christian journalist and editor of Hugh's News. Here are Dr. Vinson Synan's words:
The Value of Hugh's News to the IPHC and the Body of Christ Worldwide
Author: Dr. Vinson Synan, noted Church Historian
No church ever had a more loyal son than the Pentecostal Holiness church has in Hugh Morgan. He has taken online journalism to new heights.
I hope every one of his e-mails can be preserved for the Church archives. It is a current and newsy feature that keeps us together as a church family.
I have worked with Hugh for decades, especially when he was President of Southwestern College in Oklahoma City. I also remember him for nominating me to serve as General Secretary of the PHC in Roanoke in 1973. For better or for worse, this began a 12 year period of leadership for me in the IPHC. Also Hugh and Melvine and Carol and I were married on the exact same day (but in separate cities), August 13, 1960.
God bless you Hugh and also Hugh’s News.
Vinson Synan
