Melvine was blessed indeed to have gotten an appointment to get injections of steroids and medicine in her lower back to help relieve the screaming pain in her lower back and left leg for Tuesday.
Greg drove us. Melvine used her rollator walker at the surgery center. After we had checked in, Melvine was trying to turn with her walker to go into the waiting room, and gingerly fell backwards in a slow motion fashion and landed on the floor on her side. Fortunately, a couple of men were just inside the door and helped her to get up. Of course, the nursing staff were there to supervise it all in making sure she was alright. She did skin her left elbow and they treated it and put on band aids.
Bonnie Bender joined us after we were seated in the waiting room. Her presence had a calming effect on Melvine. She has been with us through thick and then. I asked permission for Bonnie to go inside to be checked and evaluated. Donna was the nurse who had helped me on Monday with the appointment and did the intake interview. Melvine's vital signs were good. Dr. Ben McCurdy came in and talked with Melvine. He went ahead with the procedure. They put Melvine in a wheelchair and took her to the operating room.
Melvine did well. When the nursing staff got Melvine in our car and fastened her seat belt, Melvine said she was hungry. She had not had anything to eat since breakfast. Greg has suggested that we go to Taqueria La Parrilla Mexican Restaurant in Homewood Hill Shopping Center near our church in Athens. Greg took extra care of his mother. Melvine ate heartedly.
We enjoyed eating together. We still miss our Stephanie who has gone to be with the Lord.
When we came home Melvine needed to go to the bathroom. Afterwards, she changed clothes and put on a gown she really likes. I helped her to get in her recliner and adjusted it so she could sleep if she wanted to. I made sure she had plenty of water to drink. Actually, Greg had filled up her water jug with water and ice. She is getting to like water.
Later on, I took her vital signs and gave her the prescribed medications she takes at evening time. I was pleasantly surprised that her blood sugar was not elevated.
We will endeavor to take one day at a time.
I made a grocery list with Greg's input, and he shopped for our groceries and put them up accordingly.
Greg washed and dried our bed sheets and pillow cases today and made our kingsize bed. He is quite a guy who enjoys serving.
I called early Tuesday morning and canceled our reservations at the Hampton Inn in Eden, NC for this weekend. There is just no way Melvine can make this long and tiring trip. We are disappointed but there will come another day when we can return to Melvine's hometown and church.
Continue to pray for Melvine. One of the next things I plan to do is to have a culture done on Melvine's urine. I want to prevent another UTI (Urinary Tract Infection). I have learned a lot about the symptoms and I know what to look for.
