News has reached me from Theresa Wood who now resides in Franklin Springs, Georgia, that she knew Jewel Wood, the widow of Dr. George O. Wood, 80, the former general superintendent of the Assemblies of God (AG).
Here is what I have learned:
George Wood's wife Jewel was from Evergreen, Alabama. She is a second cousin to Sharon Waite Chester of Nicholson, Georgia. Jewel played piano for many Alabama District AG conventions when Thressa was growing up. She briefly taught school near Robertsdale and attended our church (Robertsdale Pentecostal Holiness Church) a few times.
Jewel was a role model for all the young girls. She was beautiful and talented, and willing to serve others.
I have confirmed this interesting story by Sharon Waite Chester. I have known Sharon since she was a teenager.
My first pastorate was at the Brownville Pentecostal Holiness Church, about 6 miles from Evergreen, Alabama, where Jewel had lived. Our son, Gregory Holmes Morgan, was born in the Evergreen Memorial Hospital. Melvine taught in English and History in the Evergreen High School to supplement our income. I earned only $35 a week with no benefits. However, God blessed us and provided for our every need. To God be the glory!
