James Lyle Dickinson, 87, passed away on Friday, February 2021. He and his wife were missionaries to Costa Rica in the '70s. I met them when I became the third president of Southwestern College (now Southwestern Christian University) in 1975. James was a master mechanic and opened an auto repair shop in Bethany on the corner from our church headquarters. Barbara worked at our IPHC church headquarters for a while, but became a nurse.
Their daughter, Karen, was a student at Southwestern while I was president. She is married to Roff Hall. They met at Southwestern College. It was Rick Hurst who persuaded Roff to move to North Carolina. Rick Hurst was a special friend of mine. He was a spiritual giant and a brilliant man who served our church with excellence. They, Karen and Roff, reside in Burlington, NC. Karen has been caring for her parents in their declining years. James died peacefully. They had a private memorial service for James on Saturday, February 20.
From The Simultaneous Principle written by Dr. Frank Tunstall:
“James and Barbara Dickinson arrived in Costa Rica in 1970 and started a boat ministry along the waterways in northern Costa Rica. Dickinson had a unique gift to organize evangelistic campaigns involving the young Costa Rican evangelists. As a result, churches were established in San Ramon, Palo Seco, and Las Vegas de Palo Seco.” Dickinson also pioneered IPHC’s ministry presence in the “northeast corner of Costa Rica on the Caribbean Sea at La Bara de Colorado. When John and Edna Parker retuned to the US in 1974, James and Barbara Dickinson retuned with them, completing four years of ministry as IPHC Missionaries in Costa Rica.”
I am grateful to Bishop Talmadge Gardner for this information that was written by Dr. Frank Tunstall and published in his book, The Simultaneous Principle.
I want to thank Danny Nix for the information about the death of James Dickinson and the photo of James and Barbara. Bishop Leroy Baker gave me some history too. He knows them well.
Since I met the Dickinsons I have learned they moved back to Bakersfield, CA, but were residing in North Carolina at the time of James' death. As of this writing the obituary has not been published. I hope to get it today, Sunday, February 21. Here is the weblink for the funeral home: https://www.omegafsc.com/obituary/James-Dickinson
I am grateful to God for the opportunity I had to meet James and Barbara Dickinson and worship with them at Muse Memorial Church where Melvine, Greg, Stephanie and I worshiped and prayed.
May God bring comfort to Barbara and Karen and their family in this time of grief. We offer our prayers and condolences to the family.
