It is my prayer as your editor that you and your family are doing well. When I think of you all, my readers, I offer to God a prayer for you that God will bless you and keep His hand of protection upon you and your family from Covid-19.
When I was an Air Force chaplain at Elmendorf AFB, Anchorage, AK, 1967-70, my Wing Chaplain, Colonel, Victor H. Schroeder, American Lutheran, asked me to be the editor of the Chapel Newsletter. I told him I would do it provided I could edit what he wrote. He agree. We needed a name for a newsletter which included the Jewish congregation, Catholics, and Protestants. After seeking the recommended names for our chapel news, we came up with the name, Pew Duster. I was the editor for three years. So, my background in writing and editing goes a long way back. I still have copies of that the Pew Duster. Years later, when I was a reserve chaplain I was assigned to the Chief of Air Force Chaplains Resource Board. I did research and writing for the Chief of Chaplains, and produced his theme for five years.
I created Hugh's News because of something that happened where I did not have the news. It was when former Bishop J. Floyd Williams died. I had told Melvine a few weeks prior to his death that I sensed that he was dying and I wanted us to attend his funeral in North Carolina. She agreed to go with me.
Well, he died. There were those in Franklin Springs, College Park and Baltimore, MD, who knew. They were all friends of mine, but none thought about calling to let me know. Why should they? It was not their responsibility. Well, I missed that funeral and that grieved me. However, I contacted Jean Williams, J. Floyd's wife, now a widow, and she sent me a cassette tape of the funeral. I was able to listen to the entire funeral service. That bought closure for me on a man of God who was my friend.
So, I decided to do something about it, and I started Hugh's News. It went through a number of names before I was able to come up with Hugh's News. My longtime friend, Joel S. McGraw, and I were talking by phone and he came up with the simple title, "Hugh's News." That name took and has stayed the course.
It took me quite a while to write the Mission Statement. Several people helped me in the process. However, it was Lonnie Rex who suggested that I include the body of Christ worldwide. That rang a bell inside of me and I used it. It has satisfied my definition of the Mission Statement.
Hugh's News is the Flagship of Communications serving IPHC ministries and the body of Christ worldwide.
The Scriptural Mission is one my mother gave me when I shared with her my call to preach. She told me that God spoke it to her when she was pregnant with me, and the Holy Spirit had revealed to her I would be a preacher of the Gospel. It is recorded in the Book of Daniel:
Daniel 12:3
And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.
KJV
Now, you know the rest of the story as Paul Havey used to say.
