God’s Holiness—and Ours

Holiness in the Bible always has two parts—a separation from something and a devotion to something else. More specifically, holiness means a separation from everything that is evil or ordinary and a devotion to serving and honoring God.

God’s own holiness includes these two components, for God Himself is separate from the evil in the world and devoted to seeking His own honor. God is often called the “Holy One of Israel” (Psalm 71:22, for example). The seraphim around God’s throne cry, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” (Isaiah 6:3). “The Lord our God is holy!” exclaims the psalmist (Psalm 99:9).
