Arlette Cape Revells, 2016 Hugh's News Woman of the Year Choosing the Hugh's News Woman of the Year is a challenge for me every year. So, I seek the Lord for His guidance and wisdom. I do a lot of thinking and praying too. I desire to select the person He wants me to choose. God has helped me to change the challenge into an adventure that is exciting, joyful, and deeply satisfying.
The woman I have chosen this year I have known for thirty years. When you meet her you will sense as I do that she is a Christian lady with a mission. That mission is to please God in her worship, in her home, family, church and in the marketplace.
She grew up in a Christian home in which her parents were active in the ministry of the church. She learned about faithfulness and loyalty from them. Because they were generous in their giving not only of their money, but in time and talents, she has embraced that mind-set and philosophy for herself.
God brought the right man into her life to be her husband, build a home, and rear their family. Their love and respect for each other has never diminished. She speaks lovingly of her husband as her “Knight in Shining Armor.” He is a chemist who has retired from the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency).
She and her husband have been blessed with two outstanding children, a boy who is a graduate of Georgia Tech with a degree in electrical engineering and a girl who is a graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in early childhood and family development. Their daughter is the oldest. She married a Christian young man who is a graduate of the University of Georgia with a MBA degree. They have three bright and beautiful children: Chase, Victoria and Olivia. Their son married a gifted and talented Christian woman. God has blessed them with 10 healthy and intelligent children: Brennan, David, Gabriella, John-James, Elysiana, Isabella, Havah, Andrew Henry, Garrett and Sophia). She excitingly says we have 13 grandchildren and counting!
Our Woman of the Year is affectionately called “GG” (gracious grandmother) by her grandchildren. What a lovely name she has that is the epitome of that grace.
She is a business woman who has enjoyed over 22 years of continuous growth in a business she founded—Great Works Creation CO, a one-stop studio for marketing services through graphic design, printing, and mailing services. She works with clients in many different states. She has received 1st place recognition for her graphic designs.
She and her husband attended Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Georgia, and the University of Georgia. During her husband's career with the EPA he received a silver medal award and a national science achievement award. They are co-teachers and/or facilitators of an adult Sunday school class called Celebration Class—a cross generational gathering of various ages of adults at Christian Life Worship Center in Athens, Georgia.
Our Woman of the Year is multi-talented. She enjoys photography. She reveals, “After years of admiring the birds that ate the seeds my husband placed on our deck railing, one day I saw something more. A beautiful bluebird couple caught her attention just outside the kitchen window. They were working together to build a nest in the bluebird house on the deck. Suddenly, I saw birds caring for one another. Mates were working together to build a home. Parents were teaching their children how to feed and care for themselves. God was inspiring and teaching me through His magnificent creation!”
She wanted to capture the moment, so she quickly got her camera and started taking pictures. These birds were joined by squirrels, deer, rabbits, raccoons, and others in her photo collection. She said, “Each picture reflects a message of hope and a focus on the God Who created the creatures.”
One day, as she was admiring the life she had captured in some of her photographs, she said she heard a voice inside her say, “What is in your hand.” Thus, a new venture was born: a card line, A Little Wisdom from God's Creation, using the “life” photos with a photo story on the back describing the scene captured by the camera.
Our 2016 Hugh's News Woman of the Year is involved in various ministries. First of all, she is a pianist and keyboard artist at her church. She plays with a commanding authority and richness in her playing that inspires worshipers. She knows how to accompany singers and musicians with great skill.
She is the host-producer of the syndicated radio broadcast series, Three In One Life (threeinone.life), heard on, or coming soon to Christian broadcast outlets across the United States.
She is on the board of directors (since 1988) of Joysprings Foundation, Inc., an interdenominational ministry whose primary purpose involves providing "times of refreshing" for ministry leaders, as pastors, missionaries, writers, musicians, and marketplace entrepreneurs.
She enjoys speaking at women's conferences, retreats, business luncheons, leadership seminars, mother/daughter events, and more.
For several years she was on the PWOC (Protestant Women of the Chapel) International Speakers list. (This organization is for military wives and female military personnel).
She serves as a consultant to businesses and has taught Continuing Education classes at Athens Technical College.
She is an author: has had several published articles and continues to write. Portions of her life story have been published (with permission) by authors in other books and magazines (including Charisma magazine).
Now, let me list for you some community services in which she has participated:
In 1987, she helped my associate pastor plan our trip to Teen Talent Competition in Anaheim, CA. She and her husband knew a producer in Hollywood whom they met when they lived in Naples, Florida, who graciously gave our group of 22 people a special tour of Hollywood and Universal Studio.
Our winner directed and sponsored our instrumental ensemble. They worked hard and made it to the national level of competition several years. They came close to winning.
Through the years she has designed logos, special bulletins and graphic designs for my ministry as a pastor and director/endorser of Chaplains Ministries, IPHC. She designed the Chaplains Ministries, IPHC logo of the American Bald Eagle, American Flag, and the Cross over both. It remains the symbol today for our Chaplains Ministries, IPHC.
At our 50th wedding anniversary she designed and printed a beautiful full color bulletin which she and her family paid the costs.
When our Stephanie died, she designed and printed at her own expense a special memorial bulletin for her Memorial Service.
Because of her generosity over the 15 years of my service as the director/endorser of Chaplains Ministries, IPHC, I extended an invitation to her and her husband to be a vital part of our Chaplains and Spouses Retreat in Virginia Beach at Founders Inn. We paid for all of their expenses and treated them as if they were active duty military chaplains as a token of our love and appreciation for all the professional work she had done over the years without charge.
I asked her to be our official photographer and she took many photos of people at our retreat both in Virginia Beach and Williamsburg. In addition, she accompanied Melvine on the piano as she sang a solo, and as our daughter Stephanie led our chaplains, spouses and friends in singing a hymn at our communion service at the close of our dinner banquet.
