Fashionable Sasha:
Miracle of the "New Normal"
Fashionable Sasha:
Miracle of the "New Normal"
A yipping dog sound was distracting during a phone conversation with my sister Carole. Sasha, her new fur baby, a three-and-a-half pound perky Pomeranian, was the culprit. I asked, “What’s wrong with Sasha?”
With a smile in her voice, Carole responded, “Sasha is nipping at my ankles because she thinks the bedroom slippers I have on are hers.” Carole continued, “Her previous owner advised that when I needed to put her in her crate, I should also put in one of my bedroom slippers so she could smell the scent she has become familiar with and not feel alone. Sasha has become very possessive of my slippers. When she sees them on my feet, she nips at my ankles like ‘you’ve got my slippers on!’” And Sasha didn't want to give them up.
Have we become possessive of the familiar? In light of the impact of coronavirus, my everyday business and personal routines have taken a hit. Sometimes I feel lost in an unfamiliar sea of change. Some people call this the "new normal" and a time to rethink.
We read about how everyone and every organization is affected. Churches are rethinking services. People are rethinking how we can effectively communicate with one another, yet keep our distance. Businesses are rethinking strategies. Countries are rethinking their relationship with other countries. People are rethinking their time priorities.
I was intrigued by a movie title: Finding Normal. As part of the advertisement for the movie, the announcer said, "Sometimes you have to get lost before you can see things." I found the video online. It was about a young female doctor, Lisa, who was driving from California to New York and got sidetracked in a small town called Normal. Her eyes were opened to new things, new people, and new ways. She discovered that she had a chance to make a difference with her life in this small town.
Did you know that making a difference in another person’s life can begin with your smile? I recently heard Cindy Grosso, Founder of Charleston School of Protocol and Etiquette, say, “The smile is your most powerful gesture of positive expression.”
Mother Teresa said, “Let us always meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of love.”
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if a warm smile becomes one of our new normals? Don't be a Sasha, just smile at the changes coming.
If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture,
“Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right.
(James 2:8 NIV)
