The Scripture text is recorded in the Book of 1 Corinthians, chapter 13, and verse 12:
Editor's Commentary: The Apostle Paul drops this verse about our inability to see clearly into the magnificent love chapter, the greatest treatise in the whole world on love.
No one does it better. He was inspired by the Holy Spirit to write this chapter. It was written for our benefit.
Our current vision is compared to looking into a mirror. The reflections in a mirror have much to be desired.
It is faulty, dim, dark or darkly. We squint to see. We are in a fog or a mist that obscures our vision. Our present vision is imperfect. We are puzzled, and are not able to see all that is there.
This Scripture has new meaning for me since I had eyelid lift surgery on Wednesday, January 30, in Athens, GA.
The surgery as far as I can determine at this point in time was successful. My eyelids no longer droop and obscure my peripheral vision. I must confess, that although I have had successful cataract surgery with implanted in-ocular lens, I have not been able to fully utilize that significant eye surgery until now.
My eyes are now wide open all the time. I have stitches in my eyelids, and I am bruised, and have red skin around my eyes. However, I am completely devoid of pain. PTL! I am applying antibiotic ointment with Q-tips in the morning and prior to going to bed. I have been icing my eyes with round containers with ice covered by a paper towel to avoid frost bite and damage to my eyes and eyelids. I am using these ice packs to prevent swelling, and thus far, I have been able to accomplish my goal or purpose.
As a former military man in the Marines, Army, and Air Force, I tend to follow orders and do it with vigor and preciseness. I believe I am the winner when I obey orders.
My favorite hymn of the church along these lines is "Trust and Obey." It is the only way to be happy in Jesus when we trust and obey Him.
I love the fourth stanza of this great hymn, and for good measure I am adding the 5th stanza:
4
But we never can prove
The delights of His love,
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows,
And the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.
5
Then in fellowship sweet
We will sit at His feet,
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way;
What He says we will do;
Where He sends, we will go,
Never fear, only trust and obey.
I am now able to see both sides of the highway. Heretofore, I could not do that. I am now able to see buildings with chimneys I had never seen before as I drive through Winder. I can see clearly the highway ahead of me, and there are no spots or shadows in the road, and I can see all the way to the end of the highway up ahead. I am able to see the color pink in our family room. Although I know that Melvine had our family room painted pink several years ago, I have not been able to see clearly and distinctively that color. I just couldn't see it because of drooping eyelids.
I am so grateful to God, to Dr. Daniel Hwang, my surgery who is an ophthalmologist who has specialized in eyelid surgery, the nurses, staff, techs, and administrators at Surgery Center of Athens. I am grateful to Bonnie Patch Bender who went with me, stayed with me, went in the pre-op room to be with me, and then to be with me in the recovery room, helping me get dressed, and guiding the nurse who pushed me in a wheelchair to my car. Bonnie drove me safely to our home, but first, she took me to McDonald's to get my favorite sandwich, a fish sandwich lite on tartar sauce, freshly cooked French fries, and a large diet coke. There are no fries like hot ones and the ones that are cooked at McDonald's or Mickey D's for me, at least, are the best in the known world.
I know this Scripture refers to knowledge and reality we will one day be able to see and grasp.
The Apostle Paul wrote this Scripture too:
1 Corinthians 2:9
9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
KJV
Oh, the future for us as born-again Christians is bright and beautiful. Although I want to see the face of Jesus, to view His nail-scarred hands, His back that was lacerated for my healing, His riven side, His head that had a crown of thorns, and more . . . I am not wanting to go right now. I love what Paul wrote about life and living.
Philippians 1:21
21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
KJV
Oh, I want to go to heaven and I long to go there to be forever with the Lord Who procured my salvation and eternal life. I was saved or born again when I was six years old. I remember it today as if I were there in a daily vacation Bible school when my teacher asked me if I wanted to invite Jesus into my heart. I immediately responded by saying, Yes. And she led me in the sinner's prayer.
I was given the gift of evangelist, and I immediately started telling the story of the Gospel that tells us this in
John 3:16:
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
KJV
I am telling the story daily to everyone who will listen. It is as natural for me as breathing. As long as I live, I want to declare the Gospel and the wonderful works of God, and His Kingdom.
