Why Do We Need Full Dorms?
The answer to this question is very simple. Holmes Bible College is still a faith institution. The dorm students and a few day students do the “work” on the campus. Let me explain.
N.J. Holmes began Bible studies in his cottage on Paris Mountain in the summer of 1893. He was a practicing attorney and a Presbyterian minister. He started the 2nd Presbyterian Church of Greenville, South Carolina.
By 1898, he was ready to open the Bible college. He purchased the old Paris Mountain Altamont Hotel and began the Altamont Missionary Bible Institute. After several name changes and locations, this is now Holmes Bible College located at 4901 Old Buncombe Road, Greenville, SC 29617.
From the College’s origin, President Holmes felt that money should not prohibit “called” students from attending. That thought still guides the College.
Holmes is still a “faith” institution. Students are given certain faith challenges as tuition, room and board, and certain fees. These are specifically $100 per credit hour, $2000 in room and board per semester, and $200 in average fees per semester. The average student then pays about 17% of the cost of their education. The College, by the Lord’s blessings through alumni, friends and donors pays 83%. Most students meet these faith challenges. In addition, the College does offer some scholarships to offset these faith challenges.
Those students who live in the dorms, are allowed to work a minimum of 2 ½ hours per day, five days a week for the College, thereby offsetting their room and board challenge of $2000.00. Here is where they do the work! They cut the grass, trim, manicure the shrubbery, clean all the buildings, serve the food, assist in the kitchen, work in the library, tutor students, assist professors, and the list continues. While completing these assignments, they learn valuable skills that will be of great benefit in future ministries – pastoral, evangelists, missionaries, etc.
The Holmes experience is a total experience – spiritually, mentally, and physically. It is amazing how the Lord uses the work-study program to develop the total student/disciple for Christ.
We need full dorms because there is much work to be done. There are seven buildings on the main campus. We are presently using about 20 of the 38 acres. That is a lot of grass. There is much food to prepare!
In August 2021 we begin our 124th term. Please help us pray for full dorms. Specifically, that means 18 girls and 30 boys living in the two dorms.
The Lord is at work!
