It was a cold rainy day in the red hills of Georgia yesterday. It was cold outside but warm and comfortable inside Melvine's Home. As I have said many times before, I had rather live in Melvine's home than the finest built dog house I know about.
As a neophyte care giver I am rapidly learning what I should have learned many years before. I never knew until now all the many things Melvine's has done with amazing speed, accuracy, and perfection. She makes every step count, every job an achievement, and counts personal satisfaction she has done her best, and she has been proud of her work.

We both woke up around 7:15 a. m. I didn't want to get up. Saturdays are days we can usually sleep in a little longer. Melvine asked if I would like a cup of coffee. That sparked my attention, and I knew it would be a good thing to sit in my recliner chair, watch FOX News, as well as local news. We enjoy watching the cooking shows. I especially like the Pioneer Woman. How they can talk and prepare foods at the same time amazes me. I don't talk much when I am working. Not so with Melvine. She will tell you what she is going to do, and sometimes I will hear it three or four times. My mother did that to my father. I guess she tells me all these things so she can remember what she wants to do. She is holding herself accountable for her work and service to us.
Melvine drank her coffee in our Florida room and took that time to read the Bible and a devotional book, and pray. I read my Bible with special attention on the Christmas story in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. I found myself thinking of people in my past who were members of the churches I pastored. As I thought of those wonderful people, I offered a prayer for them and their families. I thought of President George H. W. Bush's family and prayed for them. What a week they had! That train trip from Spring, TX to College Station had been planned years before by George H. W. Bush. He loved the railroad and when he campaigned he loved to make those whistle stops at various towns along the tracks to speak directly to the people. Thousands of people lined the course the train would take. Parents took their children out of school to experience this once in a life-time event, an event that will be etched in their memories for life.
And of course, I prayed for President Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, as well for their family.
Greg got up on his own. He was eager to drive into Winder to get our breakfast at Dairy Queen and McDonald's. Of course, that called for a fresh cup of coffee. Melvine had put silverware, cups, etc. in our dish washer and we had plenty of the larger cups for our coffee. Melvine has more strength and she loves to keep active when she is able to do so. So much of the time, she has felt tired, exhausted, and unable to do her work. That is where I come it.
I have a lot of weaknesses that God and I are working on. Right now, I am working on the first characteristic of Love. Paul wrote: Love is patient. I am not a very patient person. However, God is giving me space and time to work on it. My patience is centered on my relationship with Melvine. Sometimes, because of the medication and I am sure the chemotherapy, Melvine is not able to come up with the right word or words to communicate what she is thinking and feeling. I need your prayers as I work on patience. Impatience is a problem I have.
I went to my computer to see what news I had received. It was time to respond to several emails. However, I kept falling asleep, and I knew I was not being productive and I needed to take a nap.
I knew I needed to enlist Melvine and Greg in making a grocery list for Greg to get for us. He does a great job shopping for groceries and supplies from Walmart and Ingles Grocery Store. I think we did a good job with the list of items we needed, and Greg did a better job shopping.
Melvine suggested that I call and check up on several people who are members of our local church. Some are sick, and all had special needs I needed to know about so I could pray for and with them. I made the calls, but one or two I could not reach by phone.
It's good to check with Bonnie Patch Bender about medicines and things Melvine needs. She is a big help to me and explains why I need to do various things to minister to Melvine. She is such an encourager and motivator. I call her our spiritual cheer leader.
I want to thank God for our pharmacist. One of Melvine's doctors sent in a prescription to our pharmacy for arthritis. Apparently, he did not know that this medication would not be good for Melvine since she is on Eloquist. In fact, Bonnie reminded me that Dr. Jane Huang, Melvine's oncologist wants to be in charge of all pain medications. So, I will not give Melvine this medication that could hurt her.
I continue to check Melvine's blood pressure and blood sugar. I noticed that I need batteries for my wrist blood pressure device. It is not showing accurately and a battery icon appears on the screen. I am learning fast.
Melvine is drinking more water. Today, I gave Melvine the last liquid medicine to flush out of her system the over abundance of potassium. It is fast acting, and Melvine made several trips to the bathroom.
We tuned into the Army/Navy Football game. I watched some of it. I have not followed these teams. I was glad that President Donald Trump was there and flipped the coin before the start of the game to determine who would be the kicking team and receiving team. It was good to see him supporting our men and women in our military academies. The Army won the third year in a row. I can remember when Navy would win.
Melvine got several birthday cards today. Friends of ours in Tennessee sent us a Gift card worth $50 for a birthday dinner.
My birthday is next Saturday, December 15. I will be 86. I think daily about the long life God has given me. I wonder why He has allowed me to live. Three of our former bishops, general superintendents have died with basically the same kind of cancer. I have other friends my age who are passing away.
Melvine will be 84 next Sunday, December 16. I told Melvine today that I want her to live and not die now. I do pray that God will grant her a few more years to live with a quality of life she would like to have.
If you would like to send us birthday cards you may send them to this address:
