Robert Frost, "The Road Not Taken" (1951)
By Gay Shepherd, Elon, North Carolina
Hugh this is one of my all time favorite poems. When I was teaching English in high school, memorizing this poem was an assignment I gave to my students. I have a beautiful copy of a book that is nothing but this poem. It is beautifully illustrated. When Frank and I traveled early in our marriage we visited New England numerous times. Seeing some of the areas where Frost had lived was always on our agenda. We visited Derry, Hampshire, where he lived at one time. We also saw his grave site beside a typical New England church in another town. In the cemetery there, we saw printed on a huge flat marble slab about 6' or 8' long and 3' to 4' wide was his epitaph, "I had a love affair with the world." The steeple to the church was being repaired and was laying in the grass in the church yard. I have pictures of that grave site. On that trip we were traveling with dear friends of ours from the Burlington P.H. church, Rosa and Greg Guthrie. Greg and I taught in the same high school in Burlington and he was also our Sunday School teacher for 20 - 30 years. Precious memories!
