Your contributions are needed as Hugh's News expands

We are reaching for the stars, setting new goals, moving into 21st Century Technology, and creating an atmosphere to attract 10,000 readers in 2010.

Have you noticed our newly designed professional website? Have you experienced and enjoyed the new newsletter format? We have done all these things to improve our communications with you. We strive for excellence in producing this newsletter because you, our readers, deserve the very best.

To accomplish our mission it is creating added expenses. We need your financial help. If Hugh's News is meeting a need in your life why not consider giving to this ministry as God has abundantly blessed you.

People are telling me that they are getting news here that they cannot get elsewhere. We need a constant feeding of news stories, events, and what God is doing in your church, conference or ministry.

You may give to Hugh's News, Inc. in two ways:

1. Credit Cards. We take the majority of credit cards. You contribution has a secure, direct line to our banking institution. It is immediate. It is simple to accomplish.

2. Checks or Money Orders. Please make out your checks or money orders to Hugh's News, Inc. Then, mail your check to:

Your tithes belong in your church. We only ask for an offering above that tithe. As you give to Hugh's News, give it as planting seed out of your need. In a few days, I will be planting tomato seeds indoors. I fully expect those seeds to come up in the warmth of my home, and later, when it is warmer outside, I will transplant the tomato plants in my above the ground garden.  Last year, I had a bumper crop of tomatoes. Some of my tomatoes weighed over a pound. I call them "my Gospel tomatoes." I grow them to eat, and to give away.

Your contributions and gifts are tax deductible. We are registered as a non-profit Christian coprporation with the Secretary of the State of Georgia, and we have a 501 (C) (3)Tax Exempt Status with the IRS.

Let me share in closing today's benediction from the Apostle Paul:

Will you receive the Benediction?

2 Corinthians 9:6-11

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written:

"He has scattered abroad His gifts to the poor;
His righteousness endures forever."

Now He Who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

Human Interest Stories

This is a new section to Hugh's News. It was suggested or recommended by one of our readers. He wrote, "Invite people to write a personal story about a person, e. g., a pastor, official, Sunday school teacher, or member of the IPHC who has meant something to them in their Christian life. Include stories about what Emmanuel College, Southwestern Christian University, Holmes Bible College, as well exciting stories that have occurred in the life of the church.

"I think there are hundreds of people out there who would like to write a tribute, if you invite them and have one in each Newsletter. I believe it would really catch-on.

Well, here is the first one about Juanita Long Mullins

Juanita Long Mullins came into the world in Johnson County, Kentucky, near the town of Painesville, in the waning days of 1930. Music found a way into her life at a very early age and she began getting attention for her singing when she was just seven years old.

Juanita's parents later moved to Waverly, Ohio, and then to Richlands, Virginia where she graduated from high school in 1950.

Her producer or manager was Eddy Ollikainen, who was also a guitarist on all of her recordings. A 1964 article indicates Eddie had a trio that backed her on her recordings. He was also helpful in getting her to record upon first hearing her sing. That article also notes that her talents were rather natural and from the heart at her local church, for she had no formal vocal training. Juanita's publicity manager was a Howard Mobey, a newspaper editor from Painesville who also worked out of Ashtabula, Ohio.

Country music artists back in an early era often found themselves working with a sponsor whether on the radio or for their personal appearances. In Juanita's case, her personal appearances included many Ben Franklin stores in their music departments as well as other similar stores that back then were called "five and dime" stores. She made visits to many radio stations, all through the southern part of the United States, tirelessly promoting her music.

Her popularity with the local folks was such that she was always in demand for funerals and weddings.

A short 1964 article mentions that Juanita had published a song book of over 120 of her favorite hymns.

That same article mentions a bit of information about her recording efforts. Her recording her self-penned, "Jesus Is Waiting For You" included background vocals by the Columbia Revelators, a group from Columbia, Ohio. That record had the tune "The Man Of Galilee" on the flip side.

She had a bit of a hit tune during the Christmas of 1963 with her record of "Put Christ Back In Christmas" b/w "Christmas." That effort was backed by the vocals of the Geneva Gospelaires, out of Geneva, Ohio.

To this day, Juanita and her husband are pastors at a Pentecostal Holiness Church in Ashtabula, Ohio. On most Sunday mornings, Juanita herself can be seen leading the services. Even hip replacement surgery hasn't slowed her down one bit. Juanita's family includes two daughters, Anita and Sharon and sons, Don and Jimmy, Junior. All of the children are grown and living on their own.

On display at their church is a case of memorabilia from her career, including song books, records and other mementos.

Juanita and her husband have lived the life that they preach -- offering their home and support to over 100 foster children over a span of 40 years.

When asked to recount her life and career, she noted to her husband, ". . . life just flew by."
