The Air Force Academy invited Ye Chan, the son of Chaplain (Major) Suk and Eun Kim, to visit the Air Force Academy from November 11-14, 2010, and the Academy paid all expenses.
During Ye Chan Kim's visit, the Commandant of the Academy met with Ye Chan and other selected visitors. Out of these outstanding young people, Ye Chan and two other students were given an award, as well as a certificate of appointment to the Academy.
This is good news for this high school senior. It is an early decision for the Academy. Ye Chan was excited because he didn't expect it. However, this selection was a dream comer true for Ye Chan. Suk and Eun, his parents, were pleasantly surprised by the appointment.
Well, Ye Chan still needs to receive the nomination letter from the Congresswoman, but the hardest part is over. Ye Chan signed contract paper while he was at the Academy and received an assurance letter from the Academy. Let us pray that this congresswoman will follow through and write the letter in behalf of Ye Chan.
[Editor's Note: The following is a part of the letter of recommendation I wrote in support of Ye Chan Kim's application for the Air Force Academy, and sent to Ye Chan's Congresswoman on 15 July 2010:
"It is indeed a high honor and a personal privilege of mine to recommend Mr. Ye Chan Kim for a nomination for admission to the Air Force Academy.
"His father, Chaplain (Major) Suk Kim, US Army, is an endorsed chaplain of my denomination. He is a highly disciplined Army chaplain and one of the finest Korean/American chaplains in the Army Chaplain Corps. I have known Ye Chan and his family now for 13 years.
"It has been my privilege to watch Ye Chan grow up in his home with two younger sisters. I have found him to be intelligent, thoughtful, courteous, and polite whenever I have visited with the family at various Army Posts. My conversations with him by phone have been most informative and constructive.
"He is an honor student in his high school and is a member of the National Honor Society. He is 17 years old and is a rising senior. He plays football. Although he would prefer to be a linebacker, he has submitted to the authority and decision of his coach to be a running back.
"Ye Chan Kim has set ambitious goals for himself, and I believe he has the determination, drive, motivation, and desire to excel at the Air Force Academy."]
I would like to thank you in advance for every consideration in nominating Ye Chan Kim for admission to the Air Force Academy.
Respectfully submitted,
